Ja'far bin Muhammad narrates from his father that some Quraysh came to his father, Ali bin Husayn, so he said, "Shall I not tell you something about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" The Quraysh said, "Why not, certainly narrate to us from Abu al-Qasim." So he said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was ill, Jibril (Gabriel) عليه السلام came to him and said, 'O Muhammad! Allah Almighty has sent me to encourage and honor you, which is something special for you, to ask you—although Allah knows best—Allah is asking, how do you feel?' The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'O Jibril عليه السلام, I am in a state of sorrow and pain (due to the illness and the effect of the poison which the Jewish woman gave at Khaybar).' Then the next day Jibril عليه السلام came again and asked about his condition, and the Prophet ﷺ gave the same answer. Then on the third day he came again, and the Prophet ﷺ gave the same answer. That day, along with Jibril عليه السلام, there was also an angel named Isma'il who brought one hundred thousand angels with him, and with each of them was another hundred thousand angels. He also sought permission and asked about the Prophet's ﷺ condition. Then Jibril عليه السلام said, 'This is the Angel of Death who has also come, seeking your permission to take your soul. He has never sought permission from anyone before you, nor will he seek permission from anyone after you.' So the Prophet ﷺ gave him permission to enter. He also greeted (the Prophet ﷺ) and then said, 'O Muhammad ﷺ, indeed Allah Almighty has sent me, so if permission is granted, I will seize the soul, and if you command to leave, I will leave.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'O Angel of Death, will you listen to me?' The angel said, 'Yes, I have been commanded to obey you.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked towards Jibril عليه السلام, and Jibril عليه السلام said, 'Allah Almighty is longing to meet you.' So the Noble Prophet ﷺ said to the Angel of Death, 'Obey the command. Seize my soul.' When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the companions heard a voice of condolence from the corner of the house saying, 'O People of the House! Peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah. Condolences from Allah to the bereaved. May Allah make Himself the ally of the departed, fulfill every deficiency, trust in Allah, have hope in Him, and patience over calamity brings reward.' So Sayyiduna Ali said, 'Do you know who is offering condolences? This is Khidr عليه السلام.'"
