Hadith 4109
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ حِينَ مَنَعَهُ النَّاسُ الزَّكَاةَ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُقَاتِلَهُمْ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَلَيْسَ قَدْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَقُولُوا لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، فَإِذَا قَالُوهَا عَصَمُوا مِنِّي دِمَاءَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ إِلَّا بِحَقِّهَا؟» قَالَ: فَهَذَا مِنْ حَقِّهَا أَلَّا يُفَرِّقُوا بَيْنَ مَا جَمَعَ اللَّهُ وَلَوْ مَنَعُونِي شَيْئًا مِمَّا أَقَرُّوا لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَاتَلْتُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When the people withheld zakat, I intended to fight them." It was said: "Did not the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whoever says 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no god but Allah), his wealth and blood are protected?" He replied: "Zakat is also a due right. If they withhold even a rope which they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I will fight them for it."
Hadith 4110
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ الطَّائِيِّ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ وَفْدُ أَهْلِ الرِّدَّةِ مِنْ أَسَدٍ وَغَطَفَانَ يَسْأَلُونَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصُّلْحَ، فَخَيَّرَهُمْ، إِمَّا حَرْبٌ مُجْلِيَةٌ، وَإِمَّا سِلْمٌ مُخْزِيَةٌ، قَالُوا: أَمَّا حَرْبٌ مُجْلِيَةٌ فَقَدْ عَرَفْنَاهَا، فَمَا سِلْمٌ مُخْزِيَةٌ؟ قَالَ: «تَدُونَ قَتْلَانَا، وَلَا نُودِي قَتْلَاكُمْ، وَتَشْهَدُونَ عَلَى قَتْلَاكُمْ أَنَّهُمْ فِي النَّارِ، وَتَرُدُّونَ إِلَيْنَا مَنْ أَخَذْتُمْ مِنَّا، وَلَا نَرُدُّ إِلَيْكُمْ مَا أَخَذْنَا مِنْكُمْ، وَنَنْزِعُ مِنْكُمُ الْحَلْقَةَ وَالْكُرَاعَ، وَتُتْرَكُونَ تَتَّبِعُونَ أَذْنَابَ الْإِبِلِ حَتَّى يُرِيَ اللَّهُ خَلِيفَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَأْيًا يَعْذِرُونَكُمْ عَلَيْهِ» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: أَمَّا مَا قَدْ قُلْتَ فَكَمَا قُلْتَ، لَكِنْ قَتْلَانَا قُتِلُوا فِي اللَّهِ، أُجُورُهُمْ عَلَى اللَّهِ , لَا دِيَةَ لَهُمْ
Tariq bin Shihab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The delegations of Banu Asad and Ghatafan, who had apostatized, requested a truce from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "Either a war that will serve as a lesson, or a humiliating peace." They asked about the conditions of the truce. He said: "Do not take blood money for our slain, consider your slain as inhabitants of Hell, return our captives, do not take back your captives, lay down your weapons, and follow behind the camels until Allah shows the Caliph a decision regarding you." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Our slain were martyred for the sake of Allah; there is no blood money for them."
Hadith 4111
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ: بَعَثَنَا عُثْمَانُ فِي خَمْسِينَ رَاكِبًا، وَأَمِيرُنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، فَلَمَّا انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى ذِي خَشَبٍ اسْتَقْبَلَنَا رَجُلٌ فِي عُنُقِهِ مُصْحَفٌ، مُتَقَلِّدٌ سَيْفَهُ، تَذْرِفُ عَيْنَاهُ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ هَذَا يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نَضْرِبَ بِهَذَا - يَعْنِي السَّيْفَ - عَلَى مَا فِي هَذَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ مُحَمَّدٌ: «اجْلِسْ فَنَحْنُ قَدْ ضَرَبْنَا بِهَذَا عَلَى مَا فِي هَذَا قَبْلَكَ أَوْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُولَدَ» قَالَ: فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُكَلِّمُهُمْ حَتَّى رَجَعُوا قَالَ عَمْرٌو: سَمِعْتُ جَابِرًا يَقُولُ: فَزَعَمُوا أَنَّهُمْ وَجَدُوا كِتَابًا إِلَى ابْنِ سَعْدٍ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sent us with fifty horsemen, and the commander was Muhammad bin Maslamah. When we reached Dhi Khushub, we met a man who had the Qur'an hanging from his neck and tears were flowing from his eyes. He said: "We are being told to attack the Qur'an with the sword." Muhammad said: "Sit down, we have already raised the sword for the Qur'an before you." Then he turned them back with his words. Jabir said: "It is said that they received a letter addressed to Ibn Sa'd."
Hadith 4112
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَحْصُورًا مَعَ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ فِي الدَّارِ فَرُمِيَ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا فَقُتِلَ، فَقُلْتُ لِعُثْمَانَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَمَا طَابَ الضِّرَابُ؟ قَتَلُوا رَجُلًا مِنَّا، فَقَالَ: «عَزَمْتُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ إِلَّا طَرَحْتَ سَيْفَكَ، فَإِنَّمَا تُرَادُ نَفْسِي وَسَأَقِي الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْيَوْمَ بِنَفْسِي» قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ: فَرَمَيْتُ بِسَيْفٍ فَمَا أَدْرِي أَيْنَ هُوَ حَتَّى السَّاعَةِ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I was besieged in the house with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). One of our companions was killed. I said: 'O Commander of the Believers! Now is the time for fighting.' He said: 'O Abu Hurairah! I adjure you to throw down your sword. My blood must be preserved.' So I threw down my sword, and to this day I do not know where it went."
Hadith 4113
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ يَوْمَ الدَّارِ فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَمَا ضِرَابٌ؟ فَقَالَ لِي: «يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ أَيَسُرُّكَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا وَإِيَّايَ مَعَهُمْ؟» فَقُلْتُ: لَا، فَقَالَ: «وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ قَتَلْتَ رَجُلًا وَاحِدًا، لَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلْتَ النَّاسَ جَمِيعًا» فَرَجَعْتُ فَلَمْ أُقَاتِلْ
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of the siege. I asked: O Commander of the Believers! Will you not fight?" He replied: "O Abu Hurairah! Do you wish to kill all the people and me?" I said: "No." He said: "If you kill one man, it is as if you have killed everyone."
Hadith 4114
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَلَامٍ يَوْمَ قُتِلَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ «وَاللَّهِ لَا تُرِيقُونَ مِحْجَمًا مِنْ دَمٍ إِلَّا ازْدَدْتُمْ بِهِ مِنَ اللَّهِ بُعْدًا»
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, he said: "By Allah! If you shed a single drop of blood, you will become even more distant from Allah."
Hadith 4115
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ مَعَ الْمِصْرِيِّينَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، فَلَمَّا ضَرَبُوهُ خَرَجْتُ أَشْتَدُّ قَدْ مَلَأْتُ فُرُوجِي عَدْوًا حَتَّى دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ، فَإِذَا رَجُلٌ جَالِسٌ فِي نَحْوٍ مِنْ عَشْرَةٍ، وَعَلَيْهِ عِمَامَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ، فَقَالَ لِي: «مَا وَرَاءَكَ؟» فَقُلْتُ: قَدْ وَاللَّهِ قَدْ فُرِغَ مِنَ الرَّجُلِ، فَقَالَ: «تَبًّا لَكُمْ آخِرَ الدَّهْرِ» وَإِذَا هُوَ عَلِيٌّ
Sayyiduna Abu Ja'far Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I went with the Egyptians to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). When they struck him, I ran away. I reached the mosque and there was a man sitting, wearing a black turban, among ten people. He asked: 'What happened?' I said: 'By Allah, the matter is finished.' He said: 'Woe to you, O people of the latter times!' That man was Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)."
Hadith 4116
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، «أَنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا حَدَّثَ مَا صُنِعَ بِعُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بَكَى»
Whenever Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) would narrate the incident that happened with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), he would weep.
Hadith 4117
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، وَأَبُو زُرَارَةَ قَالُوا: نَشْهَدُ بِاللَّهِ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ شَهَادَةً يَسْأَلُنَا اللَّهُ عَنْهَا، فَقَدْ شَهِدْنَا مَعَهُ مَشَاهِدَ لَسَمِعْنَا عَلِيًّا يَقُولُ: «وَاللَّهِ مَا قَتَلْتُ عُثْمَانَ، وَلَا اشْتَرَكْتُ، وَلَا أَمَرْتُ، وَلَا رَضِيتُ»
We bear witness that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! Neither did I kill Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), nor did I participate in his killing, nor did I order his killing, nor was I pleased with his killing."
Hadith 4118
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ الْوَالِي، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، يَقُولُ: «وَاللَّهِ لَوَدِدْتُ أَنَّ بَنِيَ أُمَيَّةَ رَضُوا لَنَفَّلْنَاهُمْ خَمْسِينَ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ يَحْلِفُونَ مَا قَتَلْنَا عُثْمَانَ، وَلَا نَعْلَمُ لَهُ قَاتِلًا»
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I wished that Banu Umayyah would be satisfied, so we, fifty men from Banu Hashim, would present ourselves before them and swear an oath that we neither killed Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) nor do we know the killer."
Hadith 4119
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنْ أَبِي مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، قَالَ: قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: تَذْكُرُ يَوْمَ كُنْتُ فِيهِ عَنْ يَمِينِ عَلِيٍّ، وَأَنْتَ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ يَوْمَ الْمَرِيدِ؟ سَمِعَ ضَجَّةً مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَرِيدِ فَبَعَثَ رَسُولًا لَيَنْظُرَ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي تَرَكْتُ عَائِشَةَ تَلْعَنُ قَتَلَةَ عُثْمَانَ وَالنَّاسُ يُؤَمِّنُونَ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ: «وَأَنَا أَلْعَنُ قَتَلَةَ عُثْمَانَ فِي السَّهْلِ وَالْجَبَلِ» فَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: نَعَمْ، فَقَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: أَمَا أَنَا وَابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ بِذَوَيْ عَدْلٍ؟
Muhammad bin Ali said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): "Do you remember when both of us were to the right and left of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and he, upon hearing the curse upon the killers of Uthman from Sayyidatuna Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), said: I too curse the killers of Uthman in the open and in the mountains." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Yes." Muhammad said: "Are we both not trustworthy?"
Hadith 4120
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، قَالَ: أَرْسَلَ عُثْمَانُ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ «أَنَّ ابْنَ عَمِّكَ مَقْتُولٌ، وَأَنَّكَ مَسْلُوبٌ»
Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a message to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Your cousin is about to be killed and your wealth will be looted."
Hadith 4121
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا ابْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَامِرِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ عُثْمَانَ فِي الدَّارِ فَقَالَ: عَزَمْتُ عَلَى كُلِّ مَنْ رَأَى لِي سَمْعًا وَطَاعَةً إِلَّا كَفَّ يَدَهُ وَسِلَاحَهُ، إِنَّ أَفْضَلَكُمْ عَنَّا مَنْ كَفَّ سِلَاحَهُ، وَيَدَهُ، قُمْ يَا ابْنَ عُمَرَ فَاحْجِزْ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ " فَقَامَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ، وَقَامَ مَعَهُ رِجَالٌ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ مِنْ بَنِي عَدِيٍّ، وَبَنِي نُعَيْمٍ، وَبَنِي مُطِيعٍ فَفَتَحُوا الْبَابَ فَخَرَجَ، فَدَخَلَ النَّاسُ فَقَتَلُوا عُثْمَانَ
Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I adjure every person who obeys and listens to me to withhold his hand and weapon. The best among you is the one who withholds his hand and weapon." Then he said to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Stand between the people." So he opened the door and the people rushed in and killed Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him).
Hadith 4122
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا فَرَجُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مَرْوَانُ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلَامٍ وَجَاءَ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ وَهُوَ مَحْصُورٌ فِي دَارِهِ فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ: مَرْحَبًا يَا أَخِي أَلَا أُخْبِرُكَ بِمَا رَأَيْتُ فِيَ لَيْلَتِي هَذِهِ؟ قَالَ - قُلْتُ: بَلَى، قَالَ: " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي هَذِهِ الْكُوَّةِ، فَقَالَ لِي: «يَا عُثْمَانُ» قُلْتُ: لَبَّيْكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ: «حَصَرُوكَ؟» قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: «وَأَعْطَشُوكَ؟» قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ دَلْوًا مِنْ مَاءٍ فَشَرِبْتُهُ حَتَّى رَوِيتُ، إِنِّي لَأَجِدُ بَرْدَهُ بَيْنَ ثَدْيَيَّ وَكَتِفَيَّ، فَقَالَ: «يَا عُثْمَانُ اخْتَرْ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تُفْطِرَ عِنْدِي، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْ تَظْهَرَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ» قُلْتُ ": بَلْ أُفْطِرُ عِنْدَكَ، فَقُتِلَ مِنْ يَوْمِهِ ذَلِكَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream at night. He said: 'O Uthman! Have the people besieged you?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Have they made you thirsty?' I said: 'Yes.' Then he gave me water from which I was satisfied. He said: 'O Uthman! If you wish, break your fast with me.' I said: 'I wish to break my fast with you.' So he was martyred that very day."
Hadith 4123
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ، أَنَّ مَرْوَانَ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ، قَالَ لَهُ وَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ: مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا أَحْسَنَ غَلَبَةً مِنْ أَبِيكَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، أَلَا أُحَدِّثُكَ، عَنْ غَلَبَتِهِ إِيَّانَا يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ؟ قُلْتُ: الْأَمِيرُ أَعْلَمُ، قَالَ: لَمَّا الْتَقَيْنَا يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ تَوَافَقْنَا، ثُمَّ حَمَلَ بَعْضُنَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ، فَلَمْ يَنْشَبْ أَهْلُ الْبَصْرَةِ أَنِ انْهَزَمُوا، فَصَرَخَ صَارِخٌ لِعَلِيٍّ: لَا يُقْتَلُ مُدْبِرٌ، وَلَا يُذَفَّفُ عَلَى جَرِيحٍ، وَمَنْ أَغْلَقَ عَلَيْهِ بَابَ دَارِهِ فَهُوَ آمِنٌ، وَمَنْ طَرَحَ السِّلَاحَ آمِنٌ، قَالَ مَرْوَانُ: وَقَدْ كُنْتُ دَخَلْتُ دَارَ فُلَانٍ، ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْتُ إِلَى حَسَنٍ وَحُسَيْنٍ ابْنِي عَلِيٍّ، وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ فَكَلَّمُوهُ، قَالَ: هُوَ آمِنٌ فَلْيَتَوَجَّهْ حَيْثُ شَاءَ، فَقُلْتُ: لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا تَطِيبُ نَفْسِي حَتَّى أُبَايِعَهُ فَبَايَعْتُهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: اذْهَبْ حَيْثُ شِئْتَ
Ali bin Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Marwan bin Hakam said: "I have not seen anyone more dominant than Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)." When the Battle of Jamal began and the people of Basra were defeated, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) made an announcement: "Whoever retreats shall not be killed, whoever lays down his weapon is safe, and whoever closes his door is secure." Then I sought safety from him and pledged allegiance.
Hadith 4124
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا، «كَانَ لَا يَأْخُذُ سَلَبًا، وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ يُبَاشِرُ الْقِتَالَ بِنَفْسِهِ، وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يُذَفِّفُ عَلَى جَرِيحٍ، وَلَا يَقْتُلُ مُدْبِرًا»
Hazrat Ali bin Husain (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would not take anything from the spoils of war. He himself would fight. He would not attack the wounded, nor would he kill one who turned his back (in retreat)."
Hadith 4125
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مَعْمَرٌ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي سَيْفُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ فُلَانٍ الْعَنَزِيُّ خَالِي، عَنْ جَدِّي، قَالَ: لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْجَمَلِ وَاضْطَرَبَ الْخَيْلُ جَاءَ أُنَاسٌ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ يَدَّعُونَ أَشْيَاءَ فَأَكْثَرُوا، فَلَمْ يَفْهَمْ، فَقَالَ: أَلَا رَجُلٌ يَجْمَعُ كَلَامَهُمْ فِي خَمْسِ كَلِمَاتٍ أَوْ سِتٍّ؟ قَالَ: فَاحْتَفَزْتُ عَلَى إِحْدَى رِجْلَيَّ، ثُمَّ تَطَاوَلْتُ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنَّ الْكَلَامَ لَيْسَ بِخَمْسٍ وَلَا سِتٍّ، وَلَكِنَّهُمَا كَلِمَتَانِ، فَنَظَرَ إِلَيَّ عَلِيٌّ، فَقُلْتُ: هَضْمٌ أَوْ قِصَاصٌ، فَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ وَعَقَدَ ثَلَاثِينَ: «قَالُونُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا عَدَدْتُمْ فَإِنَّهُ تَحْتَ قَدَمَيَّ»
An Ansari companion said: On the day of the Battle of Jamal, when people began shouting, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Is there anyone who can explain their matter in five or six words?" I said: "O Commander of the Faithful! The matter is in two words: reconciliation or retribution." So he gestured with his hand and said: "What you have counted is beneath my feet."
Hadith 4126
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: نا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ، قَالَ: لَمَّا ظَهَرَ عَلِيٌّ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْجَمَلِ، قَالَ: «لَا تُجْهِزُوا عَلَى جَرِيحٍ، وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا مُدْبِرًا، وَمَا كَانَ فِي الْعَسْكَرِ فَهُوَ لَكُمْ، وَمَا كَانَ خَارِجًا فَلَيْسَ لَكُمْ، وَأُمَّهَاتُ الْأَوْلَادِ لَيْسَ لَكُمْ عَلَيْهِنَّ سَبِيلٌ، وَتَعْتَدُّ النِّسْوَةُ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِهِنَّ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا»
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not kill the wounded. Do not pursue those who turn their backs. Whatever is in the army is yours. Whatever is outside is not yours. You have no right over slave women. And widowed women must observe a waiting period of four months and ten days."
Hadith 4127
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي فَاخِتَةَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي جَارٌ، لِي قَالَ: أَتَيْتُ عَلِيًّا يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ بِأَسِيرٍ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: لَا تَقْتُلْنِي، فَقَالَ: " لَا أَقْتُلُكَ صَبْرًا إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللَّهَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ، أَفِيكَ خَبَرُ تَبَايُعٍ؟ فَقَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَقَالَ لِلَّذِي جَاءَ بِهِ: «لَكَ سِلَاحُهُ»
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to a prisoner: "I will not kill you with patience (i.e., by torturing you), I fear Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Have you given information about the pledge (bay'ah)?" The prisoner said: "Yes." So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the one who brought the prisoner: "He has given you his weapon."
Hadith 4128
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: نا الشَّيْبَانِيُّ، عَنْ عَرْفَجَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: جَاءَ بِمَا كَانَ مِنْ رَثِّهِ أَهْلُ النَّهَرِ فَوَضَعَهُ فِي الرَّحَبَةِ، فَقَالَ: «مَنْ عَرَفَ شَيْئًا فَلْيَأْخُذْهُ , فَجَعَلَ النَّاسُ يَأْخُذُونَ حَتَّى بَقِيَتْ قِدْرٌ حِينًا حَتَّى جَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَأَخَذَهَا»
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had the remnants of the people of Nahrawan placed in Rahbah and announced: "Whoever recognizes his property may take it." So people began to take their belongings until only a cooking pot remained, then a man came and took it.
Hadith 4129
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، قَالَ: أنا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ: كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ لَحِقَتْ بِالْحَرُورِيَّةِ، وَفَارَقَتْ زَوْجَهَا، وَشَهِدَتْ عَلَى قَوْمِهَا بِالشِّرْكِ، وَتَزَوَّجَتْ فِيهِمْ، ثُمَّ رَجَعَتْ تَائِبَةً، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ الزُّهْرِيُّ، وَأَنَا شَاهِدٌ: «أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فَإِنَّ فِتْنَةَ الْأُولَى ثَارَتْ وَأَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِمَّنْ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا كَثِيرٌ، فَرَأَوْا أَنْ يَهْدِرُوا أَمْرَ الْفِتْنَةِ، وَلَا يُقَامُ فِيهَا حَدٌّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ فَرْجٍ اسْتَحَلَّهُ بِتَأْوِيلِ الْقُرْآنِ، وَلَا عَلَى قِصَاصٍ اسْتَحَلَّهُ بِتَأْوِيلِ الْقُرْآنِ، وَلَا مَالٍ اسْتَحَلَّهُ بِتَأْوِيلِ الْقُرْآنِ، إِلَّا أَنْ يُوجَدَ شَيْءٌ بِعَيْنِهِ، وَإِنِّي أَرَى أَنْ تَرُدَّهَا إِلَى زَوْجِهَا وَأَنْ تَحُدَّ مَنِ افْتَرَى عَلَيْهَا»
Hazrat Zuhri, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote to Sulaiman bin Hisham: "There was a large number of Badr companions in the turmoil; they decided that for whatever was interpreted from the Qur'an during the turmoil, there would be neither hadd nor qisas, and I command you to return that woman to her husband's marriage and to impose hadd on whoever slanders her."
Hadith 4130
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي مَنْ رَأَى عَمْرَو بْنَ الْعَاصِ يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ عَلَى مِنْبَرٍ لَهُ عَجَلٌ تُجَرُّ بِهِ، فَقَالَ: " يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ أَقِمِ الصَّفَّ كَقَصِّ الشَّارِبِ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ: " عَلَيَّ بِالسِّلَاحِ، فَأَلْقَوْا حَوْلَهُ مِثْلَ الْحَرَّةِ السَّوْدَاءِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: خُذُوا فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ أَخْطَئُوا خَطِيئَةً بَلَغَتْ عَنَانَ السَّمَاءِ، فَأَقْبَلَ النَّاسُ فَأَخَذُوا، فَقَالَ: عَلَيْكُمُ الدَّجَّالَ " يَعْنِي هَاشِمَ بْنَ عُتْبَةَ الْأَعْوَرَ
Someone saw that Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) was on the pulpit on the day of Siffin. He said: "O servant of Allah! Straighten the rows as you trim the mustache." Then he said: "Bring the weapons." So many weapons were brought that they looked like black stones. Then he said: "These people have made a great mistake, fight them." And he said: "Hold fast to the Dajjal." Meaning Hashim bin Utbah al-A'war.
Hadith 4131
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا شِهَابُ بْنُ خِرَاشٍ، قَالَ: نا الْعَوَّامُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ شُرَحْبِيلَ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، وَلَمْ أَرَ هَمْدَانِيًّا كَانَ أَفْضَلَ مِنْهُ، قُلْتُ: وَلَا مَسْرُوقٌ، قَالَ: وَلَا مَسْرُوقٌ، قَالَ: " اهْتَمَمْتُ بِأَمْرِ أَهْلِ صِفِّينَ وَمَا كُنْتُ أَعْرِفُ مَنِ الْفَضْلُ فِي الْفَرِيقَيْنِ، فَسَأَلْتُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يُرِيَنِي مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ أَمْرًا أَسْكُنُ إِلَيْهِ، فَأُرِيتُ فِي مَنَامِي أَنِّي رُفِعْتُ إِلَى أَهْلِ صِفِّينَ فَإِذَا أَنَا بِأَصْحَابِ عَلِيٍّ فِي رَوْضَةٍ خَضْرَاءَ وَمَاءٍ جَارٍ فَقُلْتُ: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ بِمَا أَرَى، وَقَدْ قَتَلَ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا، قَالُوا: إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا رَبَّنَا رَءُوفًا رَحِيمًا، قُلْتُ: فَمَا فَعَلَ ذُو الْكَلَاعِ، وَحَوْشَبٌ يَعْنِي أَصْحَابَ مُعَاوِيَةَ، قَالُوا: أَمَامَكَ فَإِذَا سَهْمٌ كَالْحَنَاحِزِ فَهَبَطْتُ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ فِي رَوْضَةٍ خَضْرَاءَ وَمَاءٍ جَارٍ، فَقُلْتُ: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ بِمَا أَرَى وَقَدْ قَتَلَ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا، قَالُوا: إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا رَبَّنَا رَءُوفًا رَحِيمًا، قُلْتُ: فَمَا فَعَلَ أَهْلُ النَّهْرَوَانِ قَالُوا: أُلْقُوا بَرْحًا، أَوْ قَالَ كَمَا لَقَوْا بَرْحًا "
Amr bin Shurahbil (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "I was hesitant regarding the matter of Siffin, so I prayed to Allah to grant me peace of mind. Then I saw in a dream that the companions of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) were in a lush garden with flowing water, and they were saying: 'We found our Lord to be Merciful.' And I saw some of the people of Muawiyah in front of me, and regarding the people of Nahrawan, it was said: 'They were cast into a bad state.'"
Hadith 4132
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَبَّقَ بَيْنَ الْخَيْلِ فَأَرْسَلَ مَا ضَمُرَ مِنْهَا مِنَ الْحَفْيَاءِ إِلَى مَسْجِدِ بَنِي زُرَيْقٍ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) held a horse race; the lean horse was raced from Hafyaa to the mosque of Banu Zuraiq.
Hadith 4133
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، أَنَّ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْعَاصِ، سَبَّقَ بَيْنَ الْخَيْلِ بِالْكُوفَةِ، وَجَعَلَ مِائَةَ قَصَبَةٍ، وَجَعَلَ لِآخِرِهَا قَصَبَةً أَلْفَ دِرْهَمٍ "
It was said that Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) held a horse race in Kufa, placed one hundred spears, and set a prize of one thousand dirhams at the last spear.
Hadith 4134
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، قَالَ: «لَا بَأْسَ بِالدَّخِيلِ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ الْفَرَسَيْنِ»
Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "There is no harm in a race with a condition if there is no third horse included between the two horses."
Hadith 4135
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: قَالُوا لِجَابِرِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ: إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانُوا لَا يَرَوْنَ بِالدَّخِيلِ بَأْسًا، قَالَ: «هُمْ أَعَفُّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ»
When it was said to Sayyiduna Jabir bin Zaid (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Companions did not see any objection in a race with conditions, he replied: "They were purer than that."
Hadith 4136
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، قَالَ: نا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ: «كَانَ لَهُ بِرْذَوْنٌ يُسَابِقُ عَلَيْهِ»
Hazrat Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "He had a horse with which he used to participate in races."
Hadith 4137
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، قَالَ: نا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ: «كَانَ لَهُ بِرْذَوْنٌ يُرَاهِنُ عَلَيْهِ»
Hazrat Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "He had a horse (Barzawn) on which he used to place bets."
Hadith 4138
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا حَزْمُ بْنُ أَبِي حَزْمٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ، يَقُولُ: إِنَّ سَعْدَ بْنَ مُعَاذٍ أَصَابَهُ سَهْمٌ يَوْمَ الْأَحْزَابِ، فَقَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُمِتْنِي حَتَّى تَشْفِيَنِي مِنْ قُرَيْظَةَ وَالنَّضِيرِ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنَ الْأَحْزَابِ وَانْصَرَفَ إِلَى قُرَيْظَةَ فَحَاصَرَهُمْ، فَوَلِيَ سَعْدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ حُكْمَهُمْ، فَحَكَمَ فِيهِمْ أَنْ يُقْتَلَ الْمُقَاتِلَةُ، وَأَنْ تُسْبَى الذَّرَارِيُّ، فَقَتَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَقْتُلَ مِنْ مُقَاتِلَتِهِمْ، وَسَبَى ذَرَارِيَّهُمْ، ثُمَّ حُمِلَ سَعْدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، وَكَانَ فِي جَنَازَتِهِ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُنَافِقُونَ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: مَا أَخَفَّهُ، وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: فِيمَ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالُوا: فِيمَا حَكَمَ فِي بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ وَهُمْ كَاذِبُونَ، وَقَدْ كَانَ سَعْدٌ كَثِيرَ اللَّحْمِ، عَبْلًا مِنَ الرِّجَالِ، عَظِيمًا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُمْ يَحْمِلُونَهُ: «يَقُولُونَ مَا أَخَفَّهُ، وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَدِ اهْتَزَّ الْعَرْشُ لِرُوحِ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ»
On the day of the Battle of Ahzab, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck by an arrow, so he prayed: “O Allah! Do not let me die until You grant me satisfaction regarding Qurayzah and Nadir.” Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards Qurayzah and besieged them, he appointed Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to judge their fate. He ruled that the men should be killed and the women and children taken captive. Then, at the time of his death, the hypocrites said: “How light it is.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “By Him in Whose hand is my soul, the Throne shook for the soul of Sa’d.”
Hadith 4139
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَقَدِ اهْتَزَّ عَرْشُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِمَوْتِ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Throne of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, shook at the death of Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him)."
Hadith 4140
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، قَالَ: نا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ بْنَ سَهْلٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، يَقُولُ: لَمَّا نَزَلَ أَهْلُ قُرَيْظَةَ عَلَى حُكْمِ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ أَرْسَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَيْهِ، فَجَاءَ عَلَى حِمَارٍ، فَلَمَّا أَنْ كَانَ قَرِيبًا مِنَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلْأَنْصَارِ: «قُومُوا إِلَى سَيِّدِكُمْ»، فَجَاءَ حَتَّى قَعَدَ إِلَى جَنْبِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ نَزَلُوا عَلَى حُكْمِكَ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي أَحْكُمُ فِيهِ، أَنْ تُقَتَّلَ مُقَاتِلَتُهُمْ وَتُسْبَى ذُرِّيَّتُهُمْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَقَدْ حَكَمْتَ بِحُكْمِ الْمَلِكِ»
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the people of Qurayzah agreed to the decision of Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stand up for your leader." Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) decided that the men should be killed and the women and children should be taken captive. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have judged according to the command of the King."
Hadith 4141
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: أنا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَطِيَّةُ الْقُرَظِيُّ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ فِيمَنْ عُرِضَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ قُرَيْظَةَ فَشَكُّوا فِيَّ فَنَظَرُوا إِلَى عَانَتِي فَلَمْ يَجِدُونِي أَنْبَتُّ فَخَلَّى سَبِيلِي "
Hazrat Atiyyah Qarazi (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "I was among those who were presented before the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the day of Qurayzah, and because I had not reached puberty, I was let go."
Hadith 4142
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، قَالَ: لَقِيتُ رَجُلًا فِي مَسْجِدِ الْكُوفَةِ فَحَدَّثَنِي قَالَ: «كُنْتُ فِيمَنْ حَكَمَ فِيهِمْ سَعْدُ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ فَشَكُّوا فِيَّ فَوَجَدُونِي لَمْ تَجْرِ عَلَيَّ الْمُوسَى فَخَلَّوْا عَنِّي»
Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "I met a man who used to say: I was among those upon whom Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) passed judgment, but because I was a minor, I was set free."
Hadith 4143
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: نا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، أَنَّ ثَقِيفًا كَانَتْ حُلَفَاءَ لِبَنِي عَقِيلٍ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَأَصَابَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي عَقِيلٍ وَمَعَهُ نَاقَةٌ لَهُ، فَأَتَوْا بِهِ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَمَّا أَتَاهُ قَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ بِمَ أَخَذْتَنِي وَأَخَذْتَ سَابِقَةَ الْحَاجِّ؟ وَكَانَتِ النَّاقَةُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ إِذَا سَبَقَتْ لَمْ تُمْنَعْ مِنْ حَوْضٍ شَرَعَتْ فِيهِ أَوْ كَلَأٍ رَتَعَتْ فِيهِ، قَالَ: " بِجَرِيرَةِ حُلَفَائِكَ ثَقِيفٍ، وَكَانَتْ ثَقِيفٌ أَسَرَتْ رَجُلَيْنِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمُرُّ بِهِ وَهُوَ مَحْبُوسٌ، فَيَقُولُ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي مُسْلِمٌ، فَقَالَ: «لَوْ قُلْتَهَا وَأَنْتَ تَمْلِكُ أَمْرَكَ كُنْتَ أَنْتَ قَدْ أَفْلَحْتَ كُلَّ الْفَلَاحِ» ثُمَّ مَرَّ بِهِ أُخْرَى، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ إِنِّي جَائِعٌ فَأَطْعِمْنِي وَظَمْآنُ فَاسْقِنِي، قَالَ: «تِلْكَ حَاجَتُكَ» ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُ أَنْ يَفْدِيَهُ فَفَدَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالرَّجُلَيْنِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، وَأَمْسَكَ النَّاقَةَ لِنَفْسِهِ، وَهِيَ الْعَضْبَاءُ، فَأَغَارَ عَدُوٌّ عَلَى سَرْحِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَأَصَابُوهَا، وَكَانَ يُرِيحُونَ إِبِلَهُمْ لَيْلًا، وَكَانَتْ عِنْدَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ امْرَأَةٌ سَبَوْهَا، فَانْطَلَقَتْ فَأَتَتِ النَّعَمَ، فَجَعَلَتْ لَا تَأْتِي إِلَى بَعِيرٍ إِلَّا رَغَا، فَأَتَتْهَا فَلَمْ تَرْغُ، فَاسْتَوَتْ عَلَيْهَا فَأَرْسَلَتْهَا، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَتِ الْمَدِينَةَ قَالَ النَّاسُ: الْعَضْبَاءُ الْعَضْبَاءُ، قَالَتْ: إِنِّي نَذَرْتُ إِنْ أَنْجَانِي اللَّهُ عَلَيْهَا لَأَنْحَرَنَّهَا، فَأَخْبَرُوا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: «بِئْسَ مَا جَزَيْتِهَا، لَا وَفَاءَ لِنَذْرٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةٍ، وَلَا وَفَاءَ لِنَذْرٍ فِيمَا لَا يَمْلِكُ ابْنُ آدَمَ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him): Banu Thaqif had an alliance with Banu Aqil in the days of ignorance. The Muslims captured a man along with his she-camel. He said: “O Muhammad! Why have you captured me and the victorious she-camel of the pilgrims?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “In return for the betrayal of your allies, Thaqif.” Then that man was released in exchange for Muslim prisoners, and the she-camel (‘Adhba’) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept for himself. Then the enemy stole that she-camel, and a captive woman rode it and came to Madinah. When she vowed that if she was saved, she would slaughter the she-camel, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You have given a bad reward. Fulfilling a vow is not permissible in sin or in something you do not own.”
Hadith 4144
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا صَالِحُ بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ: نا مُعَاوِيَةُ، عَنْ نُعَيْمِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدَ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ بِصِفِّينَ فَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَأَذَّنَّا وَأَذَّنُوا، وَأَقَمْنَا فَأَقَامُوا، فَصَلَّيْنَا وَصَلَّوْا، فَالْتَفَتُّ، فَإِذَا الْقَتْلَى بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ، فَقُلْتُ لِعَلِيٍّ حِينَ انْصَرَفَ مَا تَقُولُ فِي قَتْلَانَا وَقَتْلَاهُمْ؟ فَقَالَ: «مَنْ قُتِلَ مِنَّا وَمِنْهُمْ يُرِيدُ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ»
On the day of Siffin, I was with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The call to prayer was given, both armies performed the prayer. Then I asked: "What is the ruling regarding those killed from among us and them?" He replied: "Whoever among us or among them sought the Face of Allah and the Hereafter will go to Paradise."
Hadith 4145
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا صَالِحُ بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ: نا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ شَقِيقِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ وَكَانَ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ: «يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَجْمِعُوا رَأْيَكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا وَضَعْنَا سُيُوفَنَا عَلَى عَوَاتِقِنَا إِلَّا أَسْهَلْنَ بِنَا إِلَى أَمْرٍ نَعْرِفُهُ غَيْرَ أَمْرِكُمْ هَذَا، فَاتَّهِمُوا رَأْيَكُمْ» وَغَمَدَ سَيْفَهُ، وَانْصَرَفَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ
Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunaif (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Siffin said: "O people! Gather upon your opinion. By Allah! We did not put our swords on our shoulders and take any path that we did not recognize, so doubt your own opinion." Then he sheathed his sword and went to his home.
Hadith 4146
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَمَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا كَانَ أَعْلَمَ بِاخْتِلَافِ النَّاسِ مِنْهُ، قُلْتُ: بَايَعَ طَلْحَةُ وَالزُّبَيْرُ عَلِيًّا؟ قَالَ: «صَعِدَا إِلَى عَلِيٍّ فِي مَشْرُبَةٍ لَهُ، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَا قَالَ النَّاسُ بَايَعَا بَايَعَا»
It was asked from Sayyiduna Hasan bin Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him: Did Talha and Zubair pledge allegiance to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him? He replied: "Both of them went to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, in his upper chamber. When they came down, the people said: They have pledged allegiance."
Hadith 4147
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: «كَانَتِ الْعَرَبُ يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ مَحْضَةً»
Hasan bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "On the day of Siffin, the Arabs were completely united."
Hadith 4148
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «تَكُونُ أُمَّتِي فِرْقَتَيْنِ تَخْرُجُ بَيْنَهُمَا مَارِقَةٌ تَلِي قَتْلَهَا أَوْلَاهُمَا بِالْحَقِّ»
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "My Ummah will be divided into two groups, and from among them a 'Mariqah' (rebellious group) will emerge, which will be killed by the group that is closer to the truth among the two."
