Hadith 81
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُكْتَبَ الْمُصْحَفُ فِي الشَّيْءِ الصَّغِيرِ .
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) disliked writing the Mushaf on any small thing.
Hadith 82
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا مُغِيرَةُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ: جَرِّدُوا الْقُرْآنَ، وَلَا تَخْلِطُوا عَلَيْهِ مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ .
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say: Keep the Qur'an pure and do not include in it things that are not part of it.
Hadith 83
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: كَانَ يُقَالُ: يُكْرَهُ بَيْعُ الْقُرْآنِ وَشِرَاؤُهُ وَكِتَابَتُهُ عَلَى الْأَجُرِّ، وَكَانَ يُقَالُ: لَا يُورَثُ الْمُصْحَفُ، إِنَّمَا هُوَ لِقُرَّاءِ أَهْلِ الْبَيْتِ، وَكَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُحَلَّى الْمُصْحَفُ، وَأَنْ يُعَشَّرَ أَوْ يُصَغَّرَ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ يُقَالُ: عَظِّمُوا الْقُرْآنَ، وَلَا تَخْلِطُوا بِهِ مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ، وَكَانَ يَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُكْتَبَ بِالذَّهَبِ أَوْ يُعَلَّمَ عِنْدَ رُؤُوسِ الْآيِ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ يُقَالُ: جَرِّدُوا الْقُرْآنَ .
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It was said that selling, buying, and writing the Qur’an for a wage was disliked. It was also said that the Mushaf is not given as inheritance, rather it is for the reciters of the household. It was also disliked to adorn the Mushaf, or to make it small or large. It was said: Honor the Qur’an and do not include unrelated things in it. Writing it in gold and placing marks at the heads of the verses was disliked. It was also said: Keep the Qur’an pure.
Hadith 84
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَكْرَهُ نَقْطَ الْمُصْحَفِ .
Mughira (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) disliked placing dots on the Mushaf.
Hadith 85
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا فُضَيْلٌ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ: أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ أَنْ يُصَغَّرَ الْمُصْحَفُ وَالْمَسْجِدُ، يُقَالُ: مُصَيْحِفٌ، وَمُسَيْجِدٌ .
Laith says that Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) disliked the diminutive form for "mushaf" and "masjid," such as saying «مُصَيْحِفٌ» and «مُسَيْجِدٌ».
Hadith 86
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا مَنْصُورٌ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ الْحَسَنَ، عَنْ نَقْطِ الْمَصَاحِفِ، قَالَ: لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ مَا لَمْ تَبْغُوا .
Mansur (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) about placing dots (diacritical marks) on the Mushaf, so he said: There is no harm in it, as long as you do not go to excess in it.
Hadith 87
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، أَنَا مُخْبِرٌ، عَنْ أَبِي مَعْشَرٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ: قَالَ: لَحْسُ الدُّبُرِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ نَقْطِ الْمَصَاحِفِ .
Abi Ma'shar (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) strongly disliked placing dots in the Mushaf.
Hadith 88
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ، قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، فَرَأَيْتُهُ يَقْرَأُ فِي مُصْحَفٍ مَنْقُوطٍ .
Khalid al-Hadha’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I entered upon Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) and I saw him reciting from a dotted (with diacritical marks) Mushaf.
Hadith 89
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي رَجَاءٍ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَيْفٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ الْحَسَنَ عَنْ مُصْحَفٍ يُنْقَطُ بِالْعَرَبِيَّةِ ؟ قَالَ: لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ، أَوَمَا بَلَغَكَ عَنْ كِتَابِ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ كَتَبَ: تَعَلَّمُوا الْعَرَبِيَّةَ، وَتَفَقَّهُوا فِي الدِّينِ، وَأَحْسِنُوا عِبَارَةَ الرُّؤْيَا ؟ قَالَ أَبُو رَجَاءٍ: وَسَأَلْتُ ابْنَ سِيرِينَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أَخْشَى أَنْ تَزِيدُوا فِي الْحُرُوفِ .
Hasan bin Saif (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Hasan Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked: Is it permissible to put dots on the Mushaf in Arabic? He replied: There is no harm in it. Have you not received the statement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he wrote: Learn Arabic, gain understanding of the religion, and interpret dreams in a good manner? Abu Raja Muhammad bin Saif (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked the Tabi'i Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) about this, and he replied: I fear that you might add to the letters.
Hadith 90
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ مَنْصُورِ بْنِ زَاذَانَ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ الْحَسَنَ وَابْنَ سِيرِينَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَا: لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ .
Mansur bin Zadhan (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked the Tabi'i Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) and the Tabi'i Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) about this matter, and both of them said: There is no harm in it.
Hadith 91
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا حُصَيْنٌ، قَالَ: نَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يُسْأَلُ عَنْ عَرَبِيَّةِ الْقُرْآنِ فَيُنْشِدُ الشِّعْرَ .
Ubaidullah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I saw Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) being asked about the Arabic of the Qur'an, so he would recite poetry (to explain it).
Hadith 92
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، أَنَا مُغِيرَةُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ: كَانُوا يَكْرَهُونَ أَنْ يَتَأَوَّلُوا شَيْئًا مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ عِنْدَمَا يَعْرِضُ مِنْ أَحَادِيثِ الدُّنْيَا، قِيلَ لِهُشَيْمٍ: نَحْوُ قَوْلِهِ: { جِئْتَ عَلَى قَدَرٍ يَا مُوسَى } ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ .
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says: They disliked interpreting any verse of the Qur'an during worldly conversations. Hashim (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked: Like the statement of Allah Almighty, ﴿جِئْتَ عَلَى قَدَرٍ يَا مُوسَى﴾ [سورہ طہ: 40] (Moses! You have come at the appointed time)? He replied: Yes.
Hadith 93
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا جُوَيْبِرٌ، عَنِ الضَّحَّاكِ قَالَ: لَوْلَا تِلَاوَةُ الْقُرْآنِ لَسَرَّنِي أَنْ أَكُونَ صَاحِبَ فِرَاشٍ حَتَّى أَمُوتَ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ الْمَرِيضَ يُرْفَعُ عَنْهُ الْحَرَجُ وَتُكَفَّرُ عَنْهُ خَطَايَاهُ، وَيُكْتَبُ لَهُ بِصَالِحِ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ .
Dhahhak (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If it were not for the recitation of the Qur'an, I would have preferred to remain bedridden until I died, because the legal hardship is lifted from the sick person, his sins are erased, and the reward for his good deeds that he used to do while healthy is written for him.
Hadith 94
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنِ الْعَوَّامِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ الثَّقَفِيِّ، قَالَ: نَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدَائِنِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ سَلْمَانَ الْفَارِسِيَّ يَقُولُ: كُلُّ مَا لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي الْقُرْآنِ فَهُوَ مِنْ عَفْوِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ .
Sayyiduna Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whatever Allah the Exalted has not mentioned in the Qur'an is included in forgiveness (pardon) from Allah the Exalted.
Hadith 95
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا حُصَيْنٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِجَدَّتِي أَسْمَاءَ: كَيْفَ كَانَ يَصْنَعُ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا قَرَؤُوا الْقُرْآنَ ؟ قَالَتْ: كَانُوا كَمَا نَعَتَهُمُ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: تَدْمَعُ أَعْيُنُهُمْ وَتَقْشَعِرُّ جُلُودُهُمْ، قُلْتُ: فَإِنَّ نَاسًا هَاهُنَا إِذَا سَمِعُوا ذَلِكَ تَأْخُذُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ غَشْيَةٌ، فَقَالَتْ: أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ .
Abdullah bin Urwah bin Zubair (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked my grandmother, Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her), what the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do when reciting the Qur'an. She replied: They were as Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has described them: their eyes would shed tears and their skins would tremble. I said: There are some people here who, when they hear this, fall unconscious. She said: I seek refuge with Allah from Satan.
Hadith 96
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا مُغِيرَةُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ قَالَ: يُسْرَى بِالْقُرْآنِ لَيْلًا، فَيُرْفَعُ مِنْ أَجْوَافِ الرِّجَالِ، فَيُصْبِحُونَ لَا يُصَدِّقُونَ حَدِيثًا وَلَا يُصَدِّقُونَ النِّسَاءَ، يَتَسَافَدُونَ تَسَافُدَ الْحَمِيرِ، فَيَبْعَثُ اللهُ رِيحًا فَتَقْبِضُ رُوحَ كُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ .
Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Qur'an will be taken up at night, thus it will be removed from the hearts of the people, and when they wake up in the morning, they will neither affirm anything nor affirm women; they will intermingle with each other like donkeys, then Allah will send a wind which will seize the soul of every believer.
Hadith 97
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ رُفَيْعٍ، سَمِعَ شَدَّادَ بْنَ مَعْقِلٍ، سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُ: أَوَّلُ مَا تَفْقِدُونَ مِنْ دِينِكُمُ الْأَمَانَةُ، وَآخِرُ مَا يَبْقَى الصَّلَاةُ، وَإِنَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يُرْفَعَ، قَالُوا: وَكَيْفَ وَقَدْ أَثْبَتَهُ اللهُ فِي قُلُوبِنَا وَأَثْبَتْنَاهُ فِي الْمَصَاحِفِ ؟ قَالَ: يُسْرَى عَلَيْهِ لَيْلًا، فَيَذْهَبُ مَا فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ، وَيُرْفَعُ مَا فِي الْمَصَاحِفِ، ثُمَّ قَرَأَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: { وَلَئِنْ شِئْنَا لَنَذْهَبَنَّ بِالَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ ثُمَّ لا تَجِدُ لَكَ بِهِ عَلَيْنَا وَكِيلا } .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The first thing to be taken away from your religion will be trustworthiness, and the last thing to remain will be prayer. And this Qur'an which is among you, soon it will be taken away. The Companions asked: How will this happen when Allah has preserved it in our hearts and we have written it in the manuscripts? He replied: The Qur'an will be taken away at night, so whatever is in your hearts will be erased, and whatever is in the manuscripts will also be taken away. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: ﴿And if We willed, We could surely take away that which We have revealed to you. Then you would not find for yourself concerning it any trustee against Us.﴾ [سورہ الإسراء: 86]
Hadith 98
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ الْأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ: إِذَا تَثَاءَبْتَ وَأَنْتَ تَقْرَأُ فَأَمْسِكْ عَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ حَتَّى يَذْهَبَ عَنْكَ .
Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When you are reciting the Qur'an and you yawn, then stop the recitation until the yawning is finished.
Hadith 99
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ أَبِي رَوَّادٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رُبَّمَا قَرَأَ - وَقَوْمٌ نِيَامٌ - فَيَجِدُ الرِّيحَ، فَيُمْسِكُ عَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ حَتَّى تَذْهَبَ .
Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sometimes it would happen that I would be reciting the Qur'an and some people would be sleeping, then when I would feel the wind, I would stop the recitation until it would end.
Hadith 100
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ زُرْزُرٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ عَطَاءً، قَالَ: أَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ فَيَخْرُجُ الرِّيحُ مِنِّي ! فَقَالَ: أَمْسِكْ عَنِ الْقِرَاءَةِ حَتَّى تَذْهَبَ عَنْكَ .
A man asked the Tabi'i Ata' (may Allah have mercy on him): I recite the Qur'an and wind passes from me! So he replied: Stop the recitation until it is finished.
Hadith 101
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، وَطَاوُسٍ، وَمُجَاهِدٍ أَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا: لَا يَمَسُّ الْقُرْآنَ إِلَّا وَهُوَ طَاهِرٌ، أَوْ قَالُوا: الْمُصْحَفَ .
Ata (may Allah have mercy on him), Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him), and Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Only one who is pure should touch the Qur'an (or he said: the Mushaf).
Hadith 102
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ الْأَعْوَرِ، قَالَ: كَتَبَ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ: عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ لِمُجَاهِدٍ مُصْحَفًا، فَأَعْطَاهُ خَمْسَمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ .
Muslim A’war (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man whose name was Abdur Rahman wrote a mushaf for Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him), so he gave him five hundred dirhams.
Hadith 103
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو وَكِيعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَعْقِلٍ، أَنَّ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ زِيَادٍ بُعِثَ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ يَقُومَ بِالنَّاسِ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ، فَقَامَ بِهِمْ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بِحُلَّةٍ وَخَمْسِمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ، فَقَالَ: مَا أَنَا بِآخِذٍ عَلَى الْقُرْآنِ أَجْرًا .
Abdullah bin Ma’qil (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Ubaidullah bin Ziyad sent someone to him to lead the people in prayer during the blessed month of Ramadan, so he led them in prayer. Ubaidullah bin Ziyad sent him a cloak and five hundred dirhams, so he said: I will not take any reward for the Qur’an.
Hadith 104
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ إِيَاسٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ: كَانَ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَكْرَهُونَ بَيْعَ الْمَصَاحِفِ وَتَعْلِيمَ الْغِلْمَانِ بِالْأَجْرِ، وَيُعَظِّمُونَ ذَلِكَ .
Abdullah bin Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) reports that the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked selling copies of the Qur'an and teaching children for a wage, and they considered it a serious matter.
Hadith 105
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَنَّهُ كَرِهَ أَنْ يَشْتَرِطَ الْمُعَلِّمُ .
Mughira (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) disliked the teacher who teaches for a wage to set a condition. (That is, the one who teaches should not impose any condition.)
Hadith 106
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ أَبِي مِسْكِينٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، أَوْ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ أَنَّهُمَا كَانَا لَا يَرَيَانِ بِالْأَجْرِ بَأْسًا .
Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) or Khalid narrated from Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that both of them did not see any harm in taking wages.
Hadith 107
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا فُضَيْلٌ، عَنْ لَيْثِ بْنِ أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ: إِذَا قَاطَعَ الْمُعَلِّمُ وَلَمْ يَعْدِلْ كُتِبَ مِنَ الظَّلَمَةِ .
Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When a teacher (instructor) fixes a set wage and does not act justly, he is counted among the wrongdoers.
Hadith 108
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ يُقْرِئُ رَجُلًا الْقُرْآنَ، فَحَجَّ ذَلِكَ الرَّجُلُ، فَأَهْدَى لِلَّذِي أَقْرَأَهُ قَوْسًا، فَأَتَى عَوْفَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ فَأَخْبَرَهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَلْقِهَا عَنْكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَغْزُوَ، فَقَالَ: أَلْقِهَا عَنْكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَغْزُوَ بِهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَوْفٌ: أَتُرِيدُ أَنْ تُعَلِّقَ قَوْسًا مِنْ نَارٍ ؟ قَالَ: فَرَدَّهَا الرَّجُلُ إِلَى صَاحِبِهَا .
It is narrated from Umair bin Hani (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man was teaching another man the Qur'an, then that man went for Hajj and gave a bow as a gift to the one who had taught him. He went to Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him, so he said: Return it. He said: I want to use it for jihad. Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Return it. He said: I want to use it for jihad. Sayyiduna Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do you want to hang the bow of Hellfire around your neck? So that man returned the bow to its owner.
Hadith 109
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ زَيْتُونٍ، عَنِ الطُّفَيْلِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ: أَقْرَأَنِي أُبَيٌّ الْقُرْآنَ، فَأَهْدَيْتُ إِلَيْهِ قَوْسًا، فَغَدَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ مُتَقَلِّدٌ بِهَا، فَقَالَ: مَنْ سَلَّحَكَ هَذِهِ ؟ قَالَ: الطُّفَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، أَقْرَأْتُهُ الْقُرْآنَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: تَقَلَّدُهَا شِلْوَةً مِنْ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ . قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّا نَأْكُلُ مِنْ طَعَامِهِمْ، فَقَالَ: أَمَّا طَعَامٌ صُنِعَ لِغَيْرِكَ فَحَضَرْتَهُ فَلَا بَأْسَ أَنْ تَأْكُلَهُ، وَأَمَّا مَا صُنِعَ لَكَ فَإِنَّمَا تَأْكُلُ بِخَلَاقِكَ .
Sayyiduna Tufail bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) taught me the Qur'an, so I gifted him a bow. Then, in the morning, he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was wearing that bow. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who gave you this weapon?" Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Tufail bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) did; I had taught him the Qur'an." Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have hung a piece of the fire of Hell around your neck." The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We also eat their food?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If food is prepared for others and you are present there, then there is no harm in eating it, but if it is made especially for you, then you are eating it only in exchange for your (religious) work (reward)."
Hadith 110
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ ثَلَاثَةً - فَلَمْ آلُوا -: عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ يَزِيدَ، وَمَسْرُوقًا، وَشُرَيْحًا، عَنْ بَيْعِ الْمَصَاحِفِ، فَقَالُوا: لَا تَأْخُذْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ثَمَنًا .
Abu Ad-Duha (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked three individuals (Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Yazid, may Allah be pleased with him, Masruq, may Allah have mercy on him, and Shurayh, may Allah have mercy on him) about buying and selling copies of the Qur'an, so they said: "Do not take any price in exchange for the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
Hadith 111
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا مَهْدِيُّ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ سِيرِينَ عَنْ كُتَّابِ الْمَصَاحِفِ بِالْأَجْرِ، قَالَ: كُرِهَ كِتَابَتُهَا وَاسْتِكْتَابُهَا وَبَيْعُهَا وَشِرَاؤُهَا .
Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about taking wages for writing copies of the Qur'an, so he said: "Writing it, having it written, selling it, and buying it have all been disliked."
Hadith 112
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ شُرَيْحًا، وَمَسْرُوقًا، وَعَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ يَزِيدَ عَنْ بَيْعِ الْمَصَاحِفِ، فَقَالُوا: لَا تَأْخُذْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ ثَمَنًا .
Abu Ad-Duha (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him), Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him), and Abdullah bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) about buying and selling copies of the Qur'an, so they said: "Do not take any price in exchange for the Book of Allah."
Hadith 113
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ الْعَمِّيُّ، قَالَ: نَا مَالِكُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ: دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ جَابِرُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ وَأَنَا أَكْتُبُ، فَقُلْتُ: كَيْفَ تَرَى صَنْعَتِي هَذِهِ يَا أَبَا الشَّعْثَاءِ ؟ فَقَالَ: مَا أَحْسَنَ صَنْعَتَكَ، تَنْقُلُ كِتَابَ اللهِ وَرَقَةً إِلَى وَرَقَةٍ وَآيَةً إِلَى آيَةٍ وَكَلِمَةً إِلَى كَلِمَةٍ، هَذَا الْحَلَالُ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ .
Malik bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Jabir bin Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) came to me while I was writing, so I said: "O Abu al-Sha'tha! What do you say about this writing of mine?" He replied: "Your craftsmanship is very beautiful. You are transferring the Book of Allah from one page to another, from one verse to another, and from one word to another. This is permissible; there is no harm in it."
Hadith 114
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ: أَرَادَ عَلْقَمَةُ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ مُصْحَفًا، فَكَرِهَ أَنْ يُعْطِيَ عَلَى كِتَابَتِهِ أَجْرًا، فَاشْتَرَى وَرَقَهُ وَمِدَادَهُ وَمَا يَنْبَغِي وَأَعْطَاهُ بَعْضَ أَصْحَابِهِ فَكَتَبَهُ لَهُ .
Ibrahim Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) wanted to have a Mushaf written, but he disliked paying a wage for its transcription. Therefore, he himself bought paper, ink, and the necessary materials for it, and gave them to one of his companions so that he could write it for him.
Hadith 115
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ، قَالَ: نَا مَالِكُ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، أَنَّ عِكْرِمَةَ: بَاعَ مُصْحَفًا لَهُ، وَأَنَّ الْحَسَنَ كَانَ لَا يَرَى بِهِ بَأْسًا .
Malik bin Dinar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) sold his Mushaf, and Hasan Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) did not see any harm in it.
Hadith 116
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا يُونُسُ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يَرَى بَأْسًا بِبَيْعِهَا وَاشْتِرَائِهَا .
It is narrated from Yunus, may Allah have mercy on him, that Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, did not see any harm in the buying and selling of (copies of) the Mushaf.
Hadith 117
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا دَاوُدُ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا يَبِيعُ ثَمَنَ وَرَقِهِ وَأَجْرَ كُتَّابِهُ .
Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Shu’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about this matter (the buying and selling of manuscripts), so he replied: He only sells the price of its paper and the wages of its scribes.
Hadith 118
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنْ دَاوُدَ، عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ، مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ .
It is narrated from Sha'bi, may Allah have mercy on him, in a similar manner that he said: He only sells the price of the paper and the fee of the scribe.
Hadith 119
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا هُشَيْمٌ، قَالَ: نَا لَيْثٌ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: اشْتَرِ الْمَصَاحِفَ وَلَا تَبِعْهَا .
It is narrated from Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Buy copies of the Qur'an, but do not sell them.
Hadith 120
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ قَالَ: نَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا، عَنْ لَيْثٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - مِثْلَهُ .
The same is narrated from Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
