Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Because it is possible that he composes love poetry (in his verses) about his own wife and his own slave-woman."

It is narrated from Ka'b bin Zuhayr bin Abi Sulma al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ka'b and Bujayr (may Allah be pleased with them both), the sons of Zuhayr, set out. Then he mentioned a long hadith containing the story of Bujayr's (may Allah be pleased with him) acceptance of Islam, and in it is mention of the poetry of Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). Then (he mentioned) Ka'b's (may Allah be pleased with him) coming to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his accepting Islam, and his reciting the verses of the ode which he had composed first:
1 Su'ad has parted, so my heart today is deeply grieved,
it is held captive by her and does not escape her captivity.
2 Su'ad parted in the morning when they (the caravan) set off,
while I was humming through my nose, and the lids of kohl-lined eyes were lowered.
3 When she smiles, the gleam of her teeth appears,
as though it were a spring of sweet water covered with glass.
Then he composed a long ode of forty-eight verses, and among them were these verses as well:
1 I was told that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had threatened me,
and pardon is hoped for with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
2 Pause before the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) who has given you something
in which there is admonition, counsel and complete explanation.
3 Do not accept the words of the slanderer, and
I have committed no crime, even though fabricated tales about me have multiplied.
4 This Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is a light (of guidance) from which illumination is sought,
and he is a drawn sword among the swords of Allah.
5 One of the young men of Quraysh said,
ever since they accepted Islam, the valley of Makkah has been trembling.
It is narrated from Musa bin Uqbah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Ka'b bin Zuhayr (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the verses about Su'ad before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Prophet's Mosque. When he reached these verses:
1 Indeed the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is a light (of guidance) from which illumination is sought, and a bare sword among the swords of Allah.
2 One of the young men of Quraysh said, ever since they became Muslims (that is, the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them), the valley of Makkah has been trembling.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) signalled to the people with his hands that they should come and listen to him (recite the verses).
