Hadith 2545

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: During the Battle of Ahzab, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck by an arrow and his vein (called abjal) was cut, which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cauterized with fire. His hand swelled and began to bleed again, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cauterized it again, and then the hand swelled. When Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) saw this condition (and became certain of death), he said: “O Allah, do not take my soul until my eyes are cooled by (seeing) the fate of Banu Qurayzah (i.e., until I witness their destruction by Your will).” His vein stopped (bleeding) and not a single drop of blood dripped from it until Banu Qurayzah surrendered to the judgment of Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him) (i.e., they laid down their arms). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a message to Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) (i.e., he called him, and he came), and Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the verdict: Their men should be killed and their women kept alive so that the Muslims may benefit from them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You have judged concerning them with Allah’s judgment.” At that time, Banu Qurayzah numbered four hundred individuals. When their execution was completed, then Sayyiduna Sa’d’s (may Allah be pleased with him) vein opened and he passed away.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2544)

The Banu Qurayzah were Jews residing in Quba; there was a pact between them and the Muslims. However, during the Battle of Ahzab, they broke their covenant and sided with the polytheists. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent a delegation including Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh and other companions (radi Allahu anhum) to remind them of their pact, but they behaved insolently, saying, “Who is Muhammad? What Muslims? We have no pact with them,” and hurled insults, which created a very distressing situation. For this reason, after the Battle of Ahzab, Jibril (alayhis salam) came and said that the battle was not yet over. “We are going towards Banu Qurayzah; you too should go with the Muslims.” Thus, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) besieged them, and they fortified themselves in their strongholds. When the siege became prolonged, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Mu’adh (radi Allahu anhu) was appointed as the arbitrator, and by his judgment, the Banu Qurayzah came out of their fortresses, as mentioned in the above hadith.

From this hadith, we find evidence of the virtue of Sayyiduna Sa’d (radi Allahu anhu), his insight, and that his supplications were answered. Such a wound, which would not heal even by cauterization and from which blood continued to flow, he supplicated, and Allah, by His power, stopped the blood without any medicine, and then his eyes were cooled (i.e., he was satisfied).

The one who broke the covenant, insulted the Muslims, and played with the wealth and families of their women and children, was brought to justice, and then his soul departed from the cage of the body.

Subhan Allah al-‘Azim! How unique is Allah’s majesty, and how true are His promises.
