The Muhajir said: Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about raising hands at the Ka'bah, so he replied that the Jews used to do so. We performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and did not do so (i.e., did not raise hands).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1957)
There is criticism regarding the chain of narration (isnad) of this hadith, and there is also disagreement in its text (matn). In some narrations, there is «فما صنعنا ذلك» as in the aforementioned narration; in some narrations, it is «أفصنعنا ذلك», that is, in the form of an interrogative of negation; and in Tirmidhi and others, it is «فكنا نفعله», meaning "we used to raise our hands." For this reason, raising the hands near the Ka'bah is a disputed issue, and the scholars have differing opinions about it. The summary and the actual ruling is that there is no harm in raising the hands while supplicating (making du'a) near the Ka'bah. However, at the time of farewell (wada'), turning the palms of the hands towards the Ka'bah, raising the hands, or walking backwards as some pilgrims do, all of these are not correct; rather, they are contrary to the Sunnah of the Leader of the Messengers (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Therefore, one should not do so at the time of farewell.
