Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man from Khath'am came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "My father has embraced Islam. He is very old and unable to ride, and Hajj is obligatory upon him. Can I perform Hajj on his behalf?" He (the Prophet) said, "Are you his eldest son?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet said, "Tell me, if your father had a debt and you paid it off, would your father's debt be considered paid?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet said, "Then perform Hajj on his behalf as well."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1873)
That is, the obligation of Hajj is also like a debt which must be fulfilled.
In this hadith, it is mentioned that the father is alive but very old. However, in the narration of al-Nasa’i, it is stated that a man asked: “My father has passed away and he did not perform Hajj, so should I perform Hajj on his behalf?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “If your father had a debt, would you not pay it off?” He said: “Yes.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Then fulfilling Allah’s debt is even more necessary than that.” [نسائي 2640].
