Hadith 1875

Sayyidah Sawdah bint Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My father is very old and cannot perform Hajj. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Tell me, if your father had a debt and you paid off that debt for him, would it be accepted from him?” He replied: Yes. The Prophet said: “Then Allah, the Exalted, is Most Merciful, so perform Hajj on behalf of your father.” That is, Allah, by His mercy, will accept this Hajj performed on behalf of your father.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 1874)

Imam Darimi rahimahullah has established a chapter regarding performing Hajj on behalf of the deceased, but in both narrations, there is mention of the father being alive and present. From this, perhaps the Imam’s intent is that whether the parents were unable to perform Hajj or are alive but incapacitated, in every situation Hajj can be performed on their behalf. In other narrations, there is also mention of them having passed away.

And in one narration it is stated: «حُجَّ عَنْ أَبِيْكَ وَاعْتَمِرْ» “Perform Hajj and ‘Umrah on behalf of your father as well.” (Nasa’i 2638).

Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah also held the view that performing Hajj and ‘Umrah on behalf of one’s parents is permissible, but performing only the circumambulation (tawaf) on their behalf is not correct, because in the ahadith there is no command to perform tawaf on behalf of someone else.

And Allah knows best.
