Hadith 1759
حَدَّثَنِي

ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ
عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ
عَائِشَةَ ، أَنَّهَا أَخْبَرَتْهُ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ تَسْأَلُهُ مِيرَاثَهَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِمَّا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ ، وَفَدَكٍ وَمَا بَقِيَ مِنْ خُمْسِ خَيْبَرَ ، فَقَالَ
أَبُو بَكْرٍ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : لَا نُورَثُ مَا تَرَكْنَا صَدَقَةٌ " ، إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُ آلُ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي هَذَا الْمَالِ ، وَإِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَا أُغَيِّرُ شَيْئًا مِنْ صَدَقَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ حَالِهَا ، الَّتِي كَانَتْ عَلَيْهَا فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلَأَعْمَلَنَّ فِيهَا بِمَا عَمِلَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَأَبَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَنْ يَدْفَعَ إِلَى فَاطِمَةَ شَيْئًا ، فَوَجَدَتْ فَاطِمَةُ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ فِي ذَلِكَ ، قَالَ : فَهَجَرَتْهُ فَلَمْ تُكَلِّمْهُ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَتْ وَعَاشَتْ بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ ، فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَتْ دَفَنَهَا زَوْجُهَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ لَيْلًا ، وَلَمْ يُؤْذِنْ بِهَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا عَلِيٌّ وَكَانَ لِعَلِيٍّ مِنَ النَّاسِ وِجْهَةٌ حَيَاةَ فَاطِمَةَ ، فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَتِ اسْتَنْكَرَ عَلِيٌّ وُجُوهَ النَّاسِ ، فَالْتَمَسَ مُصَالَحَةَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَمُبَايَعَتَهُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ بَايَعَ تِلْكَ الْأَشْهُرَ ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنِ ائْتِنَا وَلَا يَأْتِنَا مَعَكَ أَحَدٌ كَرَاهِيَةَ مَحْضَرِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ، لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ : وَاللَّهِ لَا تَدْخُلْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَحْدَكَ ، فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : وَمَا عَسَاهُمْ أَنْ يَفْعَلُوا بِي إِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَآتِيَنَّهُمْ ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَتَشَهَّدَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : إِنَّا قَدْ عَرَفْنَا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَضِيلَتَكَ وَمَا أَعْطَاكَ اللَّهُ ، وَلَمْ نَنْفَسْ عَلَيْكَ خَيْرًا سَاقَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ وَلَكِنَّكَ اسْتَبْدَدْتَ عَلَيْنَا بِالْأَمْرِ ، وَكُنَّا نَحْنُ نَرَى لَنَا حَقًّا لِقَرَابَتِنَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُكَلِّمُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، حَتَّى فَاضَتْ عَيْنَا أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، فَلَمَّا تَكَلَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، قَالَ : وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَقَرَابَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أَصِلَ مِنْ قَرَابَتِي ، وَأَمَّا الَّذِي شَجَرَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأَمْوَالِ ، فَإِنِّي لَمْ آلُ فِيهَ عَنِ الْحَقِّ وَلَمْ أَتْرُكْ أَمْرًا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصْنَعُهُ فِيهَا إِلَّا صَنَعْتُهُ ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ ، لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ : مَوْعِدُكَ الْعَشِيَّةُ لِلْبَيْعَةِ ، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ صَلَاةَ الظُّهْرِ رَقِيَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ، فَتَشَهَّدَ وَذَكَرَ شَأْنَ عَلِيٍّ وَتَخَلُّفَهُ عَنِ الْبَيْعَةِ وَعُذْرَهُ بِالَّذِي اعْتَذَرَ إِلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَغْفَرَ وَتَشَهَّدَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، فَعَظَّمَ حَقَّ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَحْمِلْهُ عَلَى الَّذِي صَنَعَ نَفَاسَةً عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، وَلَا إِنْكَارًا لِلَّذِي فَضَّلَهُ اللَّهُ بِهِ وَلَكِنَّا كُنَّا نَرَى لَنَا فِي الْأَمْرِ نَصِيبًا ، فَاسْتُبِدَّ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ فَوَجَدْنَا فِي أَنْفُسِنَا فَسُرَّ بِذَلِكَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ ، وَقَالُوا : أَصَبْتَ فَكَانَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ إِلَى عَلِيٍّ قَرِيبًا حِينَ رَاجَعَ الْأَمْرَ الْمَعْرُوفَ ،
It is narrated on the authority of Urwa bin Zubair who narrated from A'isha that she informed him that Fatima, daughter of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) , sent someone to Abu Bakr (RA) to demand from him her share of the legacy left by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from what Allah had bestowed upon him at Madinah and Fadak and what was left from one-fifth of the income (annually received) from Khaibar. Abu Bakr (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "We (prophets) do not have any heirs; what we leave behind is (to be given in) charity." The household of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) will live on the income from these properties, but, by Allah, I will not change the charity of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from the condition in which it was in his own time. I will do the same with it as the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) himself used to do. So Abu Bakr (RA) refused to hand over anything from it to Fatima who got angry with Abu Bakr (RA) for this reason. She forsook him and did not talk to him until the end of her life. She lived for six months after the death of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) . When she died, her husband 'Ali bin Abu Talib, buried her at night. He did not inform Abu Bakr (RA) about her death and offered the funeral prayer over her himself. During the lifetime of Fatima, 'Ali received (special) regard from the people. After she had died, he felt estrangement in the faces of the people towards him. So he sought to make peace with Abu Bakr (RA) and offer his allegiance to him. He had not yet owed allegiance to him as Caliph during these months. He sent a person to Abu Bakr (RA) requesting him to visit him unaccompanied by anyone (disapproving the presence of Umar). 'Umar said to Abu Bakr (RA) : By Allah, you will not visit them alone. Abu Bakr (RA) said: What will they do to me? By Allah, I will visit them. And he did pay them a visit alone. 'Ali recited Tashahhud (as it is done in the beginning of a religious sermon); then said: We recognise your moral excellence and what Allah has bestowed upon you. We do not envy the favour (i. e. the Caliphate) which Allah nas conferred upon you; but you have done it (assumed the position of Caliph) alone (without consulting us), and we thought we had a right (to be consulted) on account of our kinship with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) . He continued to talk to Abu Bakr (RA) (in this vein) until the latter's eyes welled up with tears. Then Abu Bakr (RA) spoke and said: By Allah, in Whose Hand is my life, the kinship of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is dearer to me than the kinship of my own people. As regards the dispute that has arisen between you and me about these properties, I have not deviated from the right course and I have not given up doing about them what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to do. So 'Ali said to Abu Bakr (RA) : This afternoon is (fixed) for (swearing) allegiance (to you). So when Abu Bakr (RA) had finished his Zuhr prayer, he ascended the pulpit and recited Tashahhud, and described the status of 'Ali, his delay in swearing allegiance and the excuse which he had offered to him (for this delay). (After this) he asked for God's forgiveness. Then 'Ali bin Abu Talib recited the Tashahhud, extolled the merits of Abu Bakr (RA) and said that his action was not prompted by any jealousy of Abu Bakr (RA) on his part or his refusal to accept the high position which Allah had conferred upon him, (adding:) But we were of the opinion that we should have a share in the government, but the matter had been decided without taking us into confidence, and this displeased us. (Hence the delay in offering allegiance. The Muslims were pleased with this (explanation) and they said: You have done the right thing. The Muslims were (again) favourably inclined to 'Ali since he adopted the proper course of action. ________ Book 019, Number 4353: It has been narrated on the authority of 'A'isha that Fatima and 'Abbas approached Abu Bakr, soliciting transfer of the legacy of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to them. At that time, they were demanding his (Holy Prophet's) lands at Fadak and his share from Khaibar. Abu Bakr (RA) said to them: I have heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) . Then he quoted the hadith having nearly the same meaning as the one which has been narrated by Uqail on the authority of al-Zuhri (and which his gone before) except that in his version he said: Then 'Ali stood up, extolled the merits of Abu Bakr (RA) mentioned his superiority, and his earlier acceptance of Islam. Then he walked to Abu Bakr (RA) and swore allegiance to him. (At this) people turned towards 'Ali and said: you have done the right thing. And they became favourably inclined to 'Ali after he had adopted the proper course of action.

سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ
أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، يَقُولُ : " بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَيْلًا قِبَلَ نَجْدٍ ، فَجَاءَتْ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي حَنِيفَةَ ، يُقَالُ لَهُ ثُمَامَةُ بْنُ أُثَالٍ سَيِّدُ أَهْلِ الْيَمَامَةِ ، فَرَبَطُوهُ بِسَارِيَةٍ مِنْ سَوَارِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " مَاذَا عِنْدَكَ يَا ثُمَامَةُ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : عِنْدِي يَا مُحَمَّدُ خَيْرٌ إِنْ تَقْتُلْ تَقْتُلْ ذَا دَمٍ ، وَإِنْ تُنْعِمْ تُنْعِمْ عَلَى شَاكِرٍ ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ الْمَالَ فَسَلْ تُعْطَ مِنْهُ مَا شِئْتَ ، فَتَرَكَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى كَانَ بَعْدَ الْغَدِ ، فَقَالَ : مَا عِنْدَكَ يَا ثُمَامَةُ ؟ ، قَالَ : مَا قُلْتُ لَكَ إِنْ تُنْعِمْ تُنْعِمْ عَلَى شَاكِرٍ ، وَإِنْ تَقْتُلْ تَقْتُلْ ذَا دَمٍ ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ الْمَالَ فَسَلْ تُعْطَ مِنْهُ مَا شِئْتَ ، فَتَرَكَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ ، فَقَالَ : مَاذَا عِنْدَكَ يَا ثُمَامَةُ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : عِنْدِي مَا قُلْتُ لَكَ إِنْ تُنْعِمْ تُنْعِمْ عَلَى شَاكِرٍ ، وَإِنْ تَقْتُلْ تَقْتُلْ ذَا دَمٍ ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تُرِيدُ الْمَالَ فَسَلْ تُعْطَ مِنْهُ مَا شِئْتَ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَطْلِقُوا ثُمَامَةَ ، فَانْطَلَقَ إِلَى نَخْلٍ قَرِيبٍ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ فَاغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ ، فَقَالَ : أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، يَا مُحَمَّدُ وَاللَّهِ مَا كَانَ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ وَجْهٌ أَبْغَضَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ وَجْهِكَ فَقَدْ أَصْبَحَ وَجْهُكَ أَحَبَّ الْوُجُوهِ كُلِّهَا إِلَيَّ ، وَاللَّهِ مَا كَانَ مِنْ دِينٍ أَبْغَضَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ دِينِكَ فَأَصْبَحَ دِينُكَ أَحَبَّ الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ إِلَيَّ ، وَاللَّهِ مَا كَانَ مِنْ بَلَدٍ أَبْغَضَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ بَلَدِكَ فَأَصْبَحَ بَلَدُكَ أَحَبَّ الْبِلَادِ كُلِّهَا إِلَيَّ ، وَإِنَّ خَيْلَكَ أَخَذَتْنِي وَأَنَا أُرِيدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَمَاذَا تَرَى ؟ ، فَبَشَّرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَعْتَمِرَ " ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ مَكَّةَ ، قَالَ لَهُ قَائِلٌ : أَصَبَوْتَ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : لَا ، وَلَكِنِّي أَسْلَمْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلَا وَاللَّهِ لَا يَأْتِيكُمْ مِنْ الْيَمَامَةِ حَبَّةُ حِنْطَةٍ حَتَّى يَأْذَنَ فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ،
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent some horsemen to Najd. They captured a man. He was from the tribe of Banu Hanifa and was called Thumama bin Uthal. He was the chief of the people of Yamama. People bound him with one of the pillars of the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out to (see) him. He said: O Thumama, what do you think? He replied: Muhammad, I have good opinion of you. If you kill me, you will kill a person who has spilt blood. If you do me a favour, you will do a favour to a grateful person. If you want wealth, ask and you will get what you will demand. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (may peace be pon him) left him (in this condition) for two days, (and came to him again) and said: What do you think, O Thumama? He replied: What I have already told you. If you do a favour, you will do a favour to a grateful person. If you kill me, you will kill a person who has spilt blood. If you want wealth, ask and you will get what you will demand. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) left him until the next day when he (came to him again) and said: What do you think, O Thumama? He replied: What I have already told you. If you do me a favour, you will do a favour to a grateful person. If you kill me, you will kill a person who has spilt blood. If you want wealth ask and you will get what you will demand. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Set Thumama free. He went to a palm-grove near the mosque and took a bath. Then he entered the mosque and said: I bear testimony (to the truth) that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is His bondman and His messenger. O Muhammad (ﷺ) , by Allah, there was no face on the earth more hateful to me than your face, but (now) your face has become to me the dearest of all faces. By Allah, there was no religion more hateful to me than your religion, but (now) your religion has become the dearest of all religions to me. By Allah, there was no city more hateful to me than your city, but (now) your city has become the dearest of all cities to me. Your horsemen captured me when I intended going for 'Umrah. Now what is your opinion (in the matter)? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) announced good tidings to him and told him to go on 'Umrah. When he reached Makkah, somebody said to him: Have you changed your religion? He said: No! I have rather embraced Islam with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) . By Allah, you will not get a single grain of wheat from Yamama until it is permitted by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) .

أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : بَيْنَا نَحْنُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ إِذْ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " انْطَلِقُوا إِلَى يَهُودَ ، فَخَرَجْنَا مَعَهُ حَتَّى جِئْنَاهُمْ ، فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَنَادَاهُمْ ، فَقَالَ : يَا مَعْشَرَ يَهُودَ أَسْلِمُوا تَسْلَمُوا ، فَقَالُوا : قَدْ بَلَّغْتَ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ذَلِكَ أُرِيدُ أَسْلِمُوا تَسْلَمُوا ، فَقَالُوا : قَدْ بَلَّغْتَ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ذَلِكَ أُرِيدُ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ : الثَّالِثَةَ فَقَالَ : اعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا الْأَرْضُ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ، وَأَنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُجْلِيَكُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْأَرْضِ ، فَمَنْ وَجَدَ مِنْكُمْ بِمَالِهِ شَيْئًا فَلْيَبِعْهُ ، وَإِلَّا فَاعْلَمُوا أَنَّ الْأَرْضَ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ " .
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) who said: We were (sitting) in the mosque when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to us and said: (Let us) go to the Jews. We went out with him until we came to them. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood up and called out to them (saying): O ye assembly of Jews, accept Islam (and) you will be safe. They said: Abu'l-Qasim, you have communicated (God's Message to us). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I want this (i. e. you should admit that God's Message has been communicated to you), accept Islam and you would be safe. They said: Abu'l-Qisim, you have communicated (Allah's Message). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I want this... - He said to them (the same words) the third time (and on getting the same reply) he added: You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I wish that I should expel you from this land. Those of you who have any property with them should sell it, otherwise they should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle (ﷺ) (and they may have to go away leaving everything behind).
Hadith 1798
A similar tradition has been narrated through a different chain of transmitters by Ibn Shihab with the addition of the words: "Before'Abdullah (b. Ubayy) became a Muslim."
Hadith 1825
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr (RA) who said: I said to the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) : Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint me to a public office? He stroked my shoulder with his hand and said: Abu Dharr, thou art weak and authority is a trust. and on the Day of Judgment it is a cause of humiliation and repentance except for one who fulfils its obligations and (properly) discharges the duties attendant thereon.

ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " أَلَا كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ ، فَالْأَمِيرُ الَّذِي عَلَى النَّاسِ رَاعٍ وَهُوَ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ ، وَالرَّجُلُ رَاعٍ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ وَهُوَ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْهُمْ ، وَالْمَرْأَةُ رَاعِيَةٌ عَلَى بَيْتِ بَعْلِهَا وَوَلَدِهِ وَهِيَ مَسْئُولَةٌ عَنْهُمْ ، وَالْعَبْدُ رَاعٍ عَلَى مَالِ سَيِّدِهِ وَهُوَ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْهُ ، أَلَا فَكُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْئُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ " ،
It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Umar that the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) (May peace be upon him) said: Beware. every one of you is a shepherd and every one is answerable with regard to his flock. The Caliph is a shepherd over the people and shall be questioned about his subjects (as to how he conducted their affairs). A man is a guardian over the members of his family and shal be questioned about them (as to how he looked after their physical and moral well-being). A woman is a guardian over the household of her husband and his children and shall be questioned about them (as to how she managed the household and brought up the children). A slave is a guardian over the property of his master and shall be questioned about it (as to how he safeguarded his trust). Beware, every one of you is a guardian and every one of you shall be questioned with regard to his trust.

ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " عَلَى الْمَرْءِ الْمُسْلِمِ السَّمْعُ وَالطَّاعَةُ فِيمَا أَحَبَّ وَكَرِهَ ، إِلَّا أَنْ يُؤْمَرَ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ ، فَإِنْ أُمِرَ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ فَلَا سَمْعَ وَلَا طَاعَةَ " ،
It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Umar that the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said: It is obligatory upon a Muslim that he should listen (to the ruler appointed over him) and obey him whether he likes it or not, except that he is ordered to do a sinful thing. If he is ordered to do a sinful act, a Muslim should neither. listen to him nor should he obey his orders.
Hadith 1851
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu 'Umar that he visited Ibn Muti', and related from the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) the tradition that has gone before.
Hadith 1856
It has been narrated on the authority of Jabir who said: We were one thousand and four hundred on the Day of Hudaibiya. We swore fealty to hiin (the Holy Prophet) and 'Umar was holding the latter's hand (when he was sitting) under the tree (called) ahadeeth (to administer the oath to the Companions). The narrator added: We took oath to the effect that we would not flee (from the battlefield if there was an encounter with the Makkahns), but we did not take oath to fight to death.
Hadith 1869
It has been narrated on the authority of'Abdullah bin 'Umar (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to forbid that one should travel to the land of the enemy taking the Qur'an (with him) lest it should fall into the hands of the enemy.
Hadith 1870
This tradition has been handed down through another chain of transmitters with the addition of the following words from'Abdullah bin 'Umar (RA) :" I came first in the race and my horse jumped into the mosque with me."

أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهُ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ قَامَ فِيهِمْ فَذَكَرَ لَهُمْ أَنَّ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالْإِيمَانَ بِاللَّهِ أَفْضَلُ الْأَعْمَالِ ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ تُكَفَّرُ عَنِّي خَطَايَايَ ؟ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " نَعَمْ ، إِنْ قُتِلْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَأَنْتَ صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَيْفَ قُلْتَ ؟ " ، قَالَ : أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَتُكَفَّرُ عَنِّي خَطَايَايَ ؟ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " نَعَمْ ، وَأَنْتَ صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ ، إِلَّا الدَّيْنَ فَإِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام قَالَ لِي ذَلِكَ " .
It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Qatadah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood up among them (his Companions) to deliver his sermon in which he told them that Jihad in the way of Allah and belief in Allah (with all His Attributes) are the most meritorious of acts. A man stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, do you think that if I am killed in the way of Allah, my sins will be blotted out from me? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Yes, in case you are killed in the way of Allah and you were patient and sincere and you always fought facing the enemy, never turming your back upon him. Then he added: What have you said (now)? (Wishing to have further assurance from him for his satisfaction), he asked (again): Do you think if I am killed in the way of Allah, all my sins will be obliterated from me? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Yes, it you were patient and sincere and always fought facing the enemy and never turning your back upon him, (all your lapses would be forgiven) except debt. Gabriel (ؑ) has told me this.
Hadith 1907
It has been narrated through a different chain of transmitters on the authority of Sufyan who said that he heard 'Umar bin al-Khattab relate (this tradition) from the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) while he was delivering a sermon from the pulpit.
Hadith 1912
It has been reported on the authority of Umm Haram daughter of Milhan (through another chain of transmitters). She said: One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) slept (at a place) near me. He woke up smiling. She said: Messenger of Allah. what made thee laugh? He said: A people from my followers were presented to me. They were sailing on the surface of this green sea... (here follows the tradition that has gone before).
Hadith 1913
It has been narrated on the authority of Salman who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Keeping watch for a day and a night is better (in point of reward) than fasting for a whole month and standing in prayer every night. If a person dies (while, performing this duty), his (meritorious) activity will continue and he will go on receiving his reward for it perpetually and will be saved from the torture of the grave.

عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ شِمَاسَةَ ، أَنَّ فُقَيْمًا اللَّخْمِيَّ ، قَالَ لِعُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ : تَخْتَلِفُ بَيْنَ هَذَيْنِ الْغَرَضَيْنِ وَأَنْتَ كَبِيرٌ يَشُقُّ عَلَيْكَ ، قَالَ
عُقْبَةُ : لَوْلَا كَلَامٌ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ أُعَانِيهِ ، قَالَ الْحَارِثُ : فَقُلْتُ لِابْنِ شَمَاسَةَ : وَمَا ذَاكَ ؟ ، قَالَ : إِنَّهُ قَالَ : " مَنْ عَلِمَ الرَّمْيَ ثُمَّ تَرَكَهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا أَوْ قَدْ عَصَى " .
It has been reported by 'Abdul Rahman bin Shamasa that Fuqaim al- Lakhmi said to Uqba bin Amir: You frequent between these two targets and you are an old man, so you will be finding it very hard. 'Uqba said: But for a thing I heard from the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) , I would not strain myself. Harith (one of the narrators in the chain of transmitters) said: I asked Ibn Shamasa: What was that? He said that he (the Holy Prophet) said: Who learnt archery and then gave it up is not from us. or he has been guilty of disobedience (to Allah's Apostle) (ﷺ) .
Hadith 1943
Ibn 'Umar reported: A person asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about the eating of the lizard, whereupon he said. I neither eat it, nor do I prohibit it.
Hadith 1945
Ibn 'Abbas reported that there had been brought to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) the flesh of a lizard and Khalid bin Walid was also present there. The rest of the hadith is the same.
Hadith 1965
Uqba bin 'Amir reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) gave the gifts of goats to be distributed amongst his Companions. They sacrificed them, but a lamb of one year of age was left. (Someone) made a mention of that to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) , whereupon he said: You sacrifice it.
Hadith 1970
Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) having said: None of you shculd eat the flesh of his sacrificial animal beyond three days.

Jabir bin 'Abdullah al-Ansari reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prohibited the (preparation of) Nabidh by mixing together fresh dates and grapes, and he prohibited the preparation of Nabidh by mixing the fresh dates and unripe dates together.

جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " غَطُّوا الْإِنَاءَ ، وَأَوْكُوا السِّقَاءَ ، وَأَغْلِقُوا الْبَابَ ، وَأَطْفِئُوا السِّرَاجَ فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَا يَحُلُّ سِقَاءً ، وَلَا يَفْتَحُ بَابًا ، وَلَا يَكْشِفُ إِنَاءً ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَّا أَنْ يَعْرُضَ عَلَى إِنَائِهِ عُودًا ، وَيَذْكُرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ ، فَلْيَفْعَلْ فَإِنَّ الْفُوَيْسِقَةَ تُضْرِمُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْبَيْتِ بَيْتَهُمْ " ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ قُتَيْبَة فِي حَدِيثِهِ وَأَغْلِقُوا الْبَابَ .
Jabir reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Cover vessels, waterskins, close the doors and extinguish the lamps, for the Satan does not loosen the waterskin, does not open the door and does not uncover the vessels. And if one amongst you fails to find (something) to cover it well, he should cover it by placing (a piece of) wood across it. Qutaiba did not mention the closing of the doors in the hadith transmitted by him.
Hadith 2014
Jabir bin 'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Cover the vessels and tie the waterskin, for there is a night in a year when pestilence descends, and it does not pass an uncovered vessel or an untied waterskin but some of that pestilence descending into it.

لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ ، بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ بِمِثْلِهِ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ ، قَالَ : فَإِنَّ فِي السَّنَةِ يَوْمًا يَنْزِلُ فِيهِ وَبَاءٌ وَزَادَ فِي آخِرِ الْحَدِيثِ ، قَالَ اللَّيْثُ : فَالْأَعَاجِمُ عِنْدَنَا يَتَّقُونَ ذَلِكَ فِي كَانُونَ الْأَوَّلِ .
This hadith is reported on the authority of Laith bin Sa'd with the same chain of transmitters, but with a slight variation in wording (and that is that) he (the Holy Prophet) said: There is a day in a year when descends the pestilence; at the end of the hadith Laith said that the non Arabs save themselves from it in Kanun Awwal (this is the month of December).

Jabir bin 'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said: Do not eat with your left hand, for the Satan eats with his left hand.
Hadith 2065
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of 'Ubaidullah through other chains of transmitters: He who eats or drinks in the vessel of silver and gold, - but there is no mention in any one of them of the words pertaining to eating and gold.

Uqba bin 'Amir said: A silk go vn was presented to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and he wore it and observed prayer in it and then returned and put it off so violently as if he despised it. He then said: It does not befit the Godfearing persons.

عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اصْطَنَعَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ، فَكَانَ يَجْعَلُ فَصَّهُ فِي بَاطِنِ كَفِّهِ إِذَا لَبِسَهُ ، فَصَنَعَ النَّاسُ ، ثُمَّ إِنَّهُ جَلَسَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَنَزَعَهُ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنِّي كُنْتُ أَلْبَسُ هَذَا الْخَاتَمَ وَأَجْعَلُ فَصَّهُ مِنْ دَاخِلٍ فَرَمَى بِهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " وَاللَّهِ لَا أَلْبَسُهُ أَبَدًا " ، فَنَبَذَ النَّاسُ خَوَاتِيمَهُمْ ، وَلَفْظُ الْحَدِيثِ لِيَحْيَى .
'Abdullah reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upol him) got fashioned a signet ring of gold but he kept its stone on the inner side of his palm as he wore it, so the people (following his example) got fashioned (such rings). Then one day as he sat on the pulpit he pulled it away saying: I wore this ring and kept its stone towards the inner side. He then threw it away, and said: By Allah, I will never wear it; so the people threw their rings away.

جَابِرٍ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " نَهَى عَنِ اشْتِمَالِ الصَّمَّاءِ ، وَالِاحْتِبَاءِ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ ، وَأَنْ يَرْفَعَ الرَّجُلُ إِحْدَى رِجْلَيْهِ عَلَى الْأُخْرَى ، وَهُوَ مُسْتَلْقٍ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ " .
Jabir reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade the wrapping of oneself completely leaving no room for the arm and supporting oneself when sitting with a single garment wrapped round one's knees and a person raising one of his feet and placing it on the other while lying on his back.

أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ، صَاحِبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَا تَدْخُلُ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ " ، قَالَ بُسْرٌ : ثُمَّ اشْتَكَى زَيْدٌ بَعْدُ فَعُدْنَاهُ ، فَإِذَا عَلَى بَابِهِ سِتْرٌ فِيهِ صُورَةٌ ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ
لِعُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ الْخَوْلَانِيِّ رَبِيبِ مَيْمُونَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : أَلَمْ يُخْبِرْنَا زَيْد عَنِ الصُّوَرِ يَوْمَ الْأَوَّلِ ، فَقَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ : أَلَمْ تَسْمَعْهُ حِينَ ، قَالَ : إِلَّا رَقْمًا فِي ثَوْبٍ .
This hadith has been reported on the authority of Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters.
Hadith 2107
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of A'isha through another chain of transmitters also. Some of the other ahadith narrated through other chains of transmitters are more complete and there is an addition in them (transmitted through other chains of transmitters). In the hadith transmitted on the authority of the nephew of Majishun she (A'isha) is reported to have said: I took it and prepared two cushions out of that and he (the Holy Prophet) used to recline against them in the house.
Hadith 2142
Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Ata' reported: I had given the name Barra to my daughter. Zainab, daughter of Abu Salama, told me that Allah's' Messenger (ﷺ) had forbidden me to give this name. (She said): I was also called Barra, but Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Don't hold yourself to be pious. It is God alone who knows the people of piety among you. They (the Companions) said: Then, what name should we give to her? He said: Name her as Zainab.

سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا اطَّلَعَ فِي جُحْرٍ فِي بَابِ ِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَمَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِدْرًى يَحُكُّ بِهِ رَأْسَهُ ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " لَوْ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَنْتَظِرُنِي لَطَعَنْتُ بِهِ فِي عَيْنِكَ " ، وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الْإِذْنُ مِنْ أَجْلِ الْبَصَرِ " .
Sahl bin Sa'd as-Sa'id reported that a person peeped through the hole of the door of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , and at that time Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had with him a scratching instrument with which he had been scratching his head. When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saw him. He said: If I were to know that you had been peeping through the door, I would have thrust that into your eyes, and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Permission is needed as a protection against glance.

عَائِشَةَ ، أَنَّ أَزْوَاجّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كُنَّ يَخْرُجْنَ بِاللَّيْلِ إِذَا تَبَرَّزْنَ إِلَى الْمَنَاصِعِ وَهُوَ صَعِيدٌ أَفْيَح ، وَكَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ، يَقُولُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : احْجُبْ نِسَاءَكَ ، فَلَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَفْعَلُ ، فَخَرَجَتْ سَوْدَةُ بِنْتُ زَمْعَةَ زَوْجُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةً مِنَ اللَّيَالِي عِشَاءً ، وَكَانَتِ امْرَأَةً طَوِيلَةً ، فَنَادَاهَا عُمَرُ أَلَا قَدْ عَرَفْنَاكِ يَا سَوْدَةُ حِرْصًا عَلَى أَنْ يُنْزَلَ الْحِجَابُ ، قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ : " فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الْحِجَابَ " .
'A'isha reported that the wives of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to go out in the cover of night when they went to open fields (in the outskirts of Medina) for easing themselves. 'Umar b Khattab used to say: Allah's Messenger, ask your ladies to observe veil, but Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) did not do that. So there went out Sauda, daughter of Zarn'a, the wife of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), during one of the nights when it was dark. She was a tall statured lady. 'Umar called her saying: Sauda, we recognise you. (He did this with the hope that the verses pertaining to veil would be revealed.) 'A'isha said: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, then revealed the verses pertaining to veil.
Hadith 2172
'Uqba bin Amir reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Beware of getting, into the houses and meeting women (in seclusion). A person from the Ansar said: Allah's Messenger, what about husband's brother, whereupon he said: Husband's brother is like death.
