Hadith 1049
وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَهَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَطَاءً ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ ، يَقُولُ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " لَوْ أَنَّ لِابْنِ آدَمَ مِلْءَ وَادٍ مَالًا ، لَأَحَبَّ أَنْ يَكُونَ إِلَيْهِ مِثْلُهُ ، وَلَا يَمْلَأُ نَفْسَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ ، وَاللَّهُ يَتُوبُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ " ، قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ : فَلَا أَدْرِي أَمِنَ الْقُرْآنِ هُوَ أَمْ لَا ، وَفِي رِوَايَةِ زُهَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : فَلَا أَدْرِي أَمِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ، لَمْ يَذْكُرْ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ .
Ibn Abbas (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: If there were for the son of Adam ؑa valley full of riches, he would long to possess another one like it. And Ibn Adam ؑdoes not feel satiated but with dust. And Allah returns to him who returns (to HiM). Ibn Abbas (RA) said: I do not know whether it is from the Qur'an or not; and in the narration transmitted by Zuhair it was said: I do not know whether it is from the Qur'an, and he made no mention of Ibn Abbas (RA) .
Hadith 1051
حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنْ الْأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَيْسَ الْغِنَى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ الْعَرَضِ ، وَلَكِنَّ الْغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ " .
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had said: Richness does not lie in the abundance of (worldly) goods but richness is the richness of the soul (heart, self).
Hadith 1055
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ ، وَأَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْأَشَجُّ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ رِزْقَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ قُوتًا " .
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: O Allah, make the provision of Muhammad's family sufficient just to sustain life.
Hadith 1056
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَإسحاق بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ ، قَالَ إسحاق أَخْبَرَنَا ، وَقَالَ الْآخَرَانِ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ سَلْمَانَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : قَسَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَسْمًا ، فَقُلْتُ : وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَغَيْرُ هَؤُلَاءِ كَانَ أَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنْهُمْ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّهُمْ خَيَّرُونِي أَنْ يَسْأَلُونِي بِالْفُحْشِ ، أَوْ يُبَخِّلُونِي ، فَلَسْتُ بِبَاخِلٍ " .
Umar bin Khattab (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) distributed something. Upon this I said: Messenger of Allah, I swear by God, the others besides them were more deserving than these (to whom you gave charity). He said: They had in fact left no other alternative for me. but (that they should) either beg importunately from me or they would regard me as a miser, but I am not a miser.
Hadith 1057
حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي سَلَمَةُ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ ، كُلُّهُمْ ، عَنْ إسحاق بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ ، وَفِي حَدِيثِ عِكْرِمَةَ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ مِنَ الزِّيَادَةِ ، قَالَ : " ثُمَّ جَبَذَهُ إِلَيْهِ جَبْذَةً ، رَجَعَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي نَحْرِ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ " ، وَفِي حَدِيثِ هَمَّامٍ : " فَجَاذَبَهُ حَتَّى انْشَقَّ الْبُرْدُ ، وَحَتَّى بَقِيَتْ حَاشِيَتُهُ فِي عُنُقِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Anas bin Malik (RA) through another chain of transmitters. And In the hadith transmitted by Ikrima bin 'Amir there is an addition: "He (the bedouin) pulled his (mantle) so violently that the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) was drifted very close to the bedouin." And in the hadith transmitted by Hammam, (the words are): "He pulled it so violently that the mantle was torn and the border was left around the neck of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ."
Hadith 150
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ . ح وحَدَّثَنِيهِ زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَخِي ابْنِ شِهَابٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنَاه إسحاق بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَعَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، قَالَا : أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ ، كُلُّهُمْ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ عَلَى مَعْنَى حَدِيثِ صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ،
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters.
Hadith 1059
وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَخِي ابْنِ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ ، وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ بمثله ، إلا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : قَالَ أَنَسٌ : قَالُوا : نَصْبِرُ ، كَرِوَايَةِ يُونُسَ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Anas bin Malik (RA) through another chain of transmitters.
Hadith 1062
حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وإسحاق بن إبراهيم ، قَالَ إسحاق أَخْبَرَنَا ، وقَالَ الْآخَرَانِ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ حُنَيْنٍ ، آثَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَاسًا فِي الْقِسْمَةِ ، فَأَعْطَى الْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ مِائَةً مِنَ الْإِبِلِ ، وَأَعْطَى عُيَيْنَةَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ، وَأَعْطَى أُنَاسًا مِنْ أَشْرَافِ الْعَرَبِ ، وَآثَرَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي الْقِسْمَةِ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : وَاللَّهِ إِنَّ هَذِهِ لَقِسْمَةٌ مَا عُدِلَ فِيهَا ، وَمَا أُرِيدَ فِيهَا وَجْهُ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : فَقُلْتُ : وَاللَّهِ لَأُخْبِرَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ بِمَا قَالَ ، قَالَ : فَتَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُهُ حَتَّى كَانَ كَالصِّرْفِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " فَمَنْ يَعْدِلُ إِنْ لَمْ يَعْدِلِ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ؟ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ قَالَ : يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ مُوسَى قَدْ أُوذِيَ بِأَكْثَرَ مِنْ هَذَا فَصَبَرَ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : لَا جَرَمَ ، لَا أَرْفَعُ إِلَيْهِ بَعْدَهَا حَدِيثًا .
Abdullah reported: On the day of Hunain, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) showed preference to some people in the distribution of the spoils. He bestowed on Aqra' bin Habis one hundred camels, and bestowed an equal (number) upon 'Uyaina, and bestowed on people among the elites of Arabia, and preferred them (to others) on that day, in the distribution (of spoils). Upon this a person said: By Allah, neither justice has been done in this distribution (of spoils), nor has the pleasure of Allah been sought in it. I (the Narrator) said: By Allah, I will certainly inform the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about it. So I came to him and informed him about what he had said. The colour of his (the Prophet's) face changed red like blood and he then said: Who would do justice, if Allah and His Messenger do not do justice? He further said: May Allah have mercy upon Moses (ؑ); he was tormented more than this, but he showed patience. I said: Never would I convey him (the Holy Prophet) after this (unpleasant) narration.
Hadith 1066
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، وَلَيْسَ فِي حَدِيثِهِمَا " يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الدِّينِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ " .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of A'mash with the same chain of transmitters, but (these words) are not there: "They pass through the religion clean as the arrow passes through the prey."
Hadith 1066
وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُمَا ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ عَبِيدَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : ذَكَرَ الْخَوَارِجَ ، فَقَالَ : " فِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ مُخْدَجُ الْيَدِ ، أَوْ مُودَنُ الْيَدِ أَوْ مَثْدُونُ الْيَدِ ، لَوْلَا أَنْ تَبْطَرُوا لَحَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِمَا وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ يَقْتُلُونَهُمْ عَلَى لِسَانِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ : " آنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ " قَالَ : " إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ ، إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ ، إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ " ،
'Ubaida narrated from 'Ali that he made a mention of the Khwarij (and in this connection) said that there would be a person among them with a defective hand. (or with a short hand) or a fleshy hand. If you were to exercise restraint, I would tell you what Allah has promised to those who would kill them on the order of Muhammad (ﷺ) . I (the narrator) said to him: Did you hear it from Muhammad: (ﷺ) ? He (Hadrat 'Ali) said: Yes, by the Lord of the Ka’bah; Yes, by the Lord of the Ka’bah; yes, by the Lord of the Ka’bah.
Hadith 1069
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ جَمِيعًا ، عَنْ وَكِيعٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، وَقَالَ : " أَنَّا لَا تَحِلُّ لَنَا الصَّدَقَةُ " ،
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Shu'bahh with the same chain of transmitters (and the words of the Holy Prophet) are: "Sadaqa is not permissible for us."
Hadith 1075
حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، قَالَتْ : كَانَتْ فِي بَرِيرَةَ ثَلَاثُ قَضِيَّاتٍ ، كَانَ النَّاسُ يَتَصَدَّقُونَ عَلَيْهَا وَتُهْدِي لَنَا ، فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " هُوَ عَلَيْهَا صَدَقَةٌ وَلَكُمْ هَدِيَّةٌ فَكُلُوهُ " ،
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) said: Three are the decions (of the Shari'ah that we have come to know) through Barira. The people gave her sadaqah and she offered us as gift. We made a mention of it to the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) , whereupon he said: It is a sadaqah for her and a gift for you; so eat it.
Hadith 1076
حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ ، قَالَتْ : بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِشَاةٍ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ ، فَبَعَثْتُ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ مِنْهَا بِشَيْءٍ ، فَلَمَّا جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَ : " هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ شَيْءٌ ؟ ، قَالَتْ : لَا إِلَّا أَنَّ نُسَيْبَةَ بَعَثَتْ إِلَيْنَا مِنَ الشَّاةِ الَّتِي بَعَثْتُمْ بِهَا إِلَيْهَا ، قَالَ : إِنَّهَا قَدْ بَلَغَتْ مَحِلَّهَا " .
Umm 'Atiyya, said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent me some mutton of sadaqah. I sent a piece out of that to 'A'isha. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to 'A'isha, he said: Have you anything with you (to eat)? She said: Nothing, except only that mutton sent to us by Nusaiba (the kunya of Umm 'Atiyyah) which you had sent to her. Whereupon he said: It has reached its proper place.
Hadith 989
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنَا هُشَيْمٌ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، وَأَبُو خَالِدٍ الْأَحْمَرُ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ ، وَابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ ، وعبد الأعلى ، كلهم عَنْ دَاوُدَ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا دَاوُدُ ، عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ ، عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا أَتَاكُمُ الْمُصَدِّقُ ، فَلْيَصْدُرْ عَنْكُمْ وَهُوَ عَنْكُمْ رَاضٍ " .
Jarir bin 'Abdullah said: 'When the collector of sadaqaht (Zakat) comes to you, (you should see) that he goes away pleased with you.
Hadith 1080
وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّمَا الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ ، فَلَا تَصُومُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ ، وَلَا تُفْطِرُوا حَتَّى تَرَوْهُ ، فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْدِرُوا لَهُ " .
Ibn'Umar (Allah be pleased with-both of them) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The month of Ramadan may consist of twenty-nine days. So do not fast till you have sighted it (the new moon) and do not break fast, till you have sighted it (the new moon of Shawwal), and if the sky is cloudy for you, then calculate.
Hadith 1082
وحَدَّثَنَاه يَحْيَى بْنُ بِشْرٍ الْحَرِيرِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَّامٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَجِيدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ ، كُلُّهُمْ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ نَحْوَهُ .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Yahya bin Abi Kathir with the same chain of transmitters.
Hadith 1093
حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا يَمْنَعَنَّ أَحَدًا مِنْكُمْ أَذَانُ بِلَالٍ ، أَوَ قَالَ : نِدَاءُ بِلَالٍ مِنْ سُحُورِهِ ، فَإِنَّهُ يُؤَذِّنُ ، أَوَ قَالَ : يُنَادِي بِلَيْلٍ لِيَرْجِعَ قَائِمَكُمْ وَيُوقِظَ نَائِمَكُمْ ، وَقَالَ : لَيْسَ أَنْ يَقُولَ هَكَذَا وَهَكَذَا وَصَوَّبَ يَدَهُ وَرَفَعَهَا ، حَتَّى يَقُولَ هَكَذَا وَفَرَّجَ بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْهِ " ،
This hadith has been narrated by Sulaiman al-Taimi with the same chain of transmitters (but with a slight variation of words) that he (the Holy Prophet) said: The dawn is not like it as it is said; he then gathered his fingers and lowered them. But he said, it is like this (and he placed the index finger upon the other one and spread his hand).
Hadith 1094
وحَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَوَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدُبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا يَغُرَّنَّكُمْ أَذَانُ بِلَالٍ ، وَلَا هَذَا الْبَيَاضُ لِعَمُودِ ، الصُّبْحِ حَتَّى يَسْتَطِيرَ هَكَذَا " .
ahadeeth bin Jundub reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The Adhan of Bilal (RA) should not mislead you nor the whiteness (of the pillar) of dawn, for it is not the whiteness of the true dawn, but that of the false dawn which is vertical like a pillar and you can eat food till the streaks of whiteness spread like it.
Hadith 1098
وحَدَّثَنَاه قُتَيْبَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِثْلِهِ .
A hadith like this has been transmitted by Sahl bin Sa'd.
Hadith 1103
وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَإسحاق ، قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْوِصَالَ " ، قَالُوا : فَإِنَّكَ تُوَاصِلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّكُمْ لَسْتُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ مِثْلِي ، إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِي ، فَاكْلَفُوا مِنَ الْأَعْمَالِ مَا تُطِيقُونَ " ،
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Abstain from Saum-Wisal. They (his Companions) said: Messenger of Allah, but you observe Saum Wisal. Upon this he said: You are not like me in this matter, for I spend my night (in a state) that my Lord feeds me and provides me drink Devote yourselves to the deeds (the burden of which) you can bear.
Hadith 1104
حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فِي رَمَضَانَ فَجِئْتُ ، فَقُمْتُ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ ، وَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ آخَرُ فَقَامَ أَيْضًا ، حَتَّى كُنَّا رَهْطًا ، فَلَمَّا حَسَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّا خَلْفَهُ ، جَعَلَ يَتَجَوَّزُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ ، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ رَحْلَهُ فَصَلَّى صَلَاةً لَا يُصَلِّيهَا عِنْدَنَا ، قَالَ : قُلْنَا لَهُ حِينَ أَصْبَحْنَا : أَفَطَنْتَ لَنَا اللَّيْلَةَ ؟ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : " نَعَمْ ذَاكَ الَّذِي حَمَلَنِي عَلَى الَّذِي صَنَعْتُ " ، قَالَ : فَأَخَذَ يُوَاصِلُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَذَاكَ فِي آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ ، فَأَخَذَ رِجَالٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ يُوَاصِلُونَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا بَالُ رِجَالٍ يُوَاصِلُونَ ، إِنَّكُمْ لَسْتُمْ مِثْلِي ، أَمَا وَاللَّهِ لَوْ تَمَادَّ لِي الشَّهْرُ ، لَوَاصَلْتُ وِصَالا يَدَعُ الْمُتَعَمِّقُونَ تَعَمُّقَهُمْ " .
Anas (RA) reported The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was observing prayer during Ramadan. I came and stood by his side. Then another man came and he stood likewise till we became a group. When the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) perceived that we were behind him, he lightened the prayer. He then went to his abode and observed such (a long) prayer (the like of which) he never observed with us. When it was morning we said to him: Did you perceive us during the night? Upon this he said: Yes, it was this (realisation) that induced me to do that which I did. He (the narrator) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) began to observe Saum Wisal at the end of the month (of Ramadan), and some persons among his Companions began to observe this uninterrupted fast, whereupon the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said: What about such persons who observe uninterrupted fasts? You are not like me. By Allah. if the month were lengthened for me, I would have observed Saum Wisal, so that those who act with an exaggeration would (have been obliged) to abandon their exaggeration. 1501
Hadith 1106
حَدَّثَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَانَ يُقَبِّلُ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ ، وَكَانَ أَمْلَكَكُمْ لِإِرْبِهِ " .
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to kiss (his wives) while fasting; and he had the greatest control over his desire (as compared with you).
Hadith 1111
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ كُلُّهُمْ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ ، قَالَ يَحْيَى : أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : هَلَكْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ ؟ " ، قَالَ : وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ ، قَالَ : " هَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُعْتِقُ رَقَبَةً ؟ " ، قَالَ : لَا ، قَالَ : " فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : لَا ، قَالَ : " فَهَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ؟ " ، قَالَ : لَا ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ جَلَسَ ، " فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ " ، فَقَالَ : " تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا " ، قَالَ : أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا فَمَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا ، " فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " اذْهَبْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ " ،
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that a person came to the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) and said: Messenger of Allah, I am undone. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What has brought about your ruin? He said: I have had intercourse with my wife during the month of Ramadan. Upon this he (the Holy prophet) said: Can you find a slave to set him free? He said: NO. He (the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) again) said: Can you observe fast for two consecutive months? He said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Can you provide food to sixty poor people? He said: No. He then sat down and (in the meanwhile) there was brought to the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) a basket which contained dates. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Give these (dates) in charity. He (the man) said: Am I to give to one who is poorer than I? There is no family poorer than mine between the two lava plains of Madinah. The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) laughed so that his molar teeth became visible and said: Go and give it to your family to eat.
Hadith 1123
حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ أَبِي النَّضْرِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ ، وَقَالَ : عَنْ عُمَيْرٍ مَوْلَى أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ .
This hadith has been narrated by Abu Nadr on the authority of Umair, the freed slave of Umm al-Fadl, through the same chain of transmitters.
Hadith 1125
حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، قَالَتْ : كَانَتْ قُرَيْشٌ تَصُومُ عَاشُورَاءَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُهُ ، فَلَمَّا هَاجَرَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ صَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ ، فَلَمَّا فُرِضَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَهُ وَمَنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَهُ " ،
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashura in the pre-Islamic days and the Messenger ot Allah (ﷺ) also observed it. When he migrated to Madinah, he himself observed this fast and commanded (others) to observe it. But when fasting during the month of Ramadan was made obligatory he said: He who wishes to observe this fast may do so, and he who wishes to abandon it may do so.
Hadith 1126
وحَدَّثَنَاه مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى وَهُوَ الْقَطَّانُ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بِمِثْلِهِ فِي هَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ .
A hadith like this has been narrated on the authority of Ubaidullah through the same chain of transmitters.
Hadith 1127
وحَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، وَقَالَا : " فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ رَمَضَانُ تَرَكَهُ " .
This hadith has been narrated from Jarir on the authority of A'mash with the same chain of transmitters and he said (these words with a little bit of variation from the previous hadith): When (fasting) in Ramadan was (made) obligatory, he abandoned it (the practice of observing fast on Ashura).
Hadith 1150
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قَالُوا : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وقَالَ زُهَيْرٌ : عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " إِذَا دُعِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ إِلَى طَعَامٍ وَهُوَ صَائِمٌ ، فَلْيَقُلْ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ " .
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: If any one of you is invited to a meal when he is fasting, he should say: "I am fasting."
Hadith 1151
حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ ، عَنِ الْأَعْرَجِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ رِوَايَةً ، قَالَ : " إِذَا أَصْبَحَ أَحَدُكُمْ يَوْمًا صَائِمًا ، فَلَا يَرْفُثْ وَلَا يَجْهَلْ ، فَإِنِ امْرُؤٌ شَاتَمَهُ أَوْ قَاتَلَهُ ، فَلْيَقُلْ : إِنِّي صَائِمٌ إِنِّي صَائِمٌ " .
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: When any one of you gets up in the morning in the state of fasting, he should neither use obscene language nor do any act of ignorance. And if anyone slanders him or quarrels with him, he should say: "I am fasting, I am fasting."
Hadith 1151
وحَدَّثَنَا وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَوَكِيعٌ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْأَشَجُّ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كُلُّ عَمَلِ ابْنِ آدَمَ يُضَاعَفُ الْحَسَنَةُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا إِلَى سَبْعمِائَة ضِعْفٍ ، قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : " إِلَّا الصَّوْمَ فَإِنَّهُ لِي ، وَأَنَا أَجْزِي بِهِ ، يَدَعُ شَهْوَتَهُ وَطَعَامَهُ مِنْ أَجْلِي ، لِلصَّائِمِ فَرْحَتَانِ : فَرْحَةٌ عِنْدَ فِطْرِهِ ، وَفَرْحَةٌ عِنْدَ لِقَاءِ رَبِّهِ ، وَلَخُلُوفُ فِيهِ أَطْيَبُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ " .
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Every (good) deed of the son of Adam ؑؑwould be multiplied, a good deed receiving a tenfold to seven hundredfold reward. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has said: With the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give a reward for it, for one abandons his passion and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts, joy when he breaks it, and joy when he meets his Lord, and the breath (of an observer of fast) is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk.
Hadith 1158
وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَابْنُ أَبِي خَلَفٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " كَانَ يَصُومُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ قَدْ صَامَ قَدْ صَامَ ، وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى يُقَالَ قَدْ أَفْطَرَ قَدْ أَفْطَرَ " .
And narrated to me Zuhayr ibn Harb and Ibn Abi Khalaf, they said: Rawh ibn ‘Ubadah narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him. And narrated to me Abu Bakr ibn Nafi‘—and the wording is his—Bahz narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us, Thabit narrated to us, from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: "He would fast until it was said, 'He has fasted, he has fasted,' and he would break his fast until it was said, 'He has broken his fast, he has broken his fast.'"
Hadith 1159
وَحَدَّثَنِيهِ زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ الْمُعَلِّمُ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ : بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، وَزَادَ فِيهِ بَعْدَ قَوْلِهِ " مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَإِنَّ لَكَ بِكُلِّ حَسَنَةٍ عَشْرَ أَمْثَالِهَا فَذَلِكَ الدَّهْرُ كُلُّهُ " ، وَقَالَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ ، قُلْتُ : وَمَا صَوْمُ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ دَاوُدَ ؟ ، قَالَ : " نِصْفُ الدَّهْرِ " ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ فِي الْحَدِيثِ مِنْ قِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْئًا وَلَمْ يَقُلْ : " وَإِنَّ لِزَوْرِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا " ، وَلَكِنْ قَالَ : " وَإِنَّ لِوَلَدِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَقًّا " .
This hadith has been narrated by Yahya bin Abu Kathir with the same chain of transmitters and he made this addition after these words: During every month, (fasting) for three days, there is for you ten times for every good and that is perpetual fasting (for three days would bring a reward for full thirty days). I said: What is the fast of the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) , David? He said: Half of the age (observing fast on alternate days for the whole
Hadith 1159
وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَوْسٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ أَحَبَّ الصِّيَامِ إِلَى اللَّهِ صِيَامُ دَاوُدَ ، وَأَحَبَّ الصَّلَاةِ إِلَى اللَّهِ صَلَاةُ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ ، كَانَ يَنَامُ نِصْفَ اللَّيْلِ ، وَيَقُومُ ثُلُثَهُ ، وَيَنَامُ سُدُسَهُ ، وَكَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمًا ، وَيُفْطِرُ يَوْمًا " .
'Abdullah bin 'Amr (Allah be pleased with both of them) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: With Allah the best fasting is that of David and the best prayer is that of David (peace be upon him) for he slept half of the night and stood for prayer for the third of it and (then) slept the sixth part of it and he observed fast one day and broke on the other.
Hadith 1159
وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ جميعا ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ ، قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَلِيمُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ مِينَاءَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو : قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو ، بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تَصُومُ النَّهَارَ ، وَتَقُومُ اللَّيْلَ ، فَلَا تَفْعَلْ فَإِنَّ لِجَسَدِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا ، وَلِعَيْنِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا ، وَإِنَّ لِزَوْجِكَ عَلَيْكَ حَظًّا ، صُمْ وَأَفْطِرْ ، صُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ ، فَذَلِكَ صَوْمُ الدَّهْرِ " ، قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنَّ بِي قُوَّةً ، قَالَ : " فَصُمْ صَوْمَ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام ، صُمْ يَوْمًا ، وَأَفْطِرْ يَوْمًا " ، فَكَانَ يَقُولُ : يَا لَيْتَنِي أَخَذْتُ بِالرُّخْصَةِ .
'Abdullah bin 'Amr (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me! 'Abdullah bin 'Amr, it has been conveyed to me that you observe fast during the day and stand in prayer during the whole night. Don't do that, for your body has a share of its own in you, your eye has a share of its own in you, your wife has a share of her own in you. Observe fast and break it too. Fast for three days in every month and that is a perpetual fasting. I said! Messenger of Allah, I have got strength enough (to do more than this), whereupon he said: Then observe the fast of David (peace be upon him). Observe fast one day and break it (on the other) day. And he ('Abdullah bin 'Amr) used to say: Would that I had availed myself of this concession.
Hadith 1162
وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيُّ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ ، عَنْ غَيْلَانَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ الزِّمَّانِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " سُئِلَ عَنْ صَوْمِ الِاثْنَيْنِ " ، فَقَالَ : " فِيهِ وُلِدْتُ ، وَفِيهِ أُنْزِلَ عَلَيَّ " .
Abu Qatadah (RA) Ansari (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was asked about fasting on Monday, whereupon he said: It is (the day) when I was born and revelation was sent down to me.
Hadith 1163
وحَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْتَشِرِ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، يَرْفَعُهُ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ أَيُّ الصَّلَاةِ أَفْضَلُ بَعْدَ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ ، وَأَيُّ الصِّيَامِ أَفْضَلُ بَعْدَ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ؟ ، فَقَالَ " أَفْضَلُ الصَّلَاةِ بَعْدَ الصَّلَاةِ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ الصَّلَاةُ فِي جَوْفِ اللَّيْلِ ، وَأَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ بَعْدَ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ صِيَامُ شَهْرِ اللَّهِ الْمُحَرَّمِ " ،
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that he (the Messenger of Allah) (ﷺ) was asked as to which prayer was most excellent after the prescribed prayer, and which fast was most excellent after the month of Ramadan. He said: Prayer offered in the middle of the night and the most excellent fast after (fasting) in the month of Ramadan is the fast in God's month al-Muharram.
Hadith 1165
وحَدَّثَنِي عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : رَأَى رَجُلٌ أَنَّ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ لَيْلَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَرَى رُؤْيَاكُمْ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ ، فَاطْلُبُوهَا فِي الْوِتْرِ مِنْهَا " .
Salim reported on the authority of his father that a person saw Lailat-ul- Qadr on the 27th (of Ramadan). Thereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: I see that your dreams agree regarding the last ten (nights of Ramadan). So seek it on an odd number (of these ten nights)
Hadith 1172
وحَدَّثَنَاه ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ سَوَّادٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي سَلَمَةُ بْنُ شَبِيبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ . ح حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاق كُلُّ هَؤُلَاءِ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمَعْنَى : حَدِيثِ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ وَعَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ وَابْنِ إِسْحَاق ذِكْرُ : عَائِشَةَ وَحَفْصَةَ وَزَيْنَبَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُنَّ : " أَنَّهُنَّ ضَرَبْنَ الْأَخْبِيَةَ لِلِاعْتِكَافِ " .
This hadith has been reported through another chain of transmitters, and there it is mentioned that. 'A'isha, Hafsa and Zainab (RA) pitched the tents for i'tikaf.
Hadith 1177
وحَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ ، وزهير بن حرب كلهم ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ ، قَالَ يَحْيَى : أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا يَلْبَسُ الْمُحْرِمُ ؟ ، قَالَ : " لَا يَلْبَسُ الْمُحْرِمُ الْقَمِيصَ وَلَا الْعِمَامَةَ وَلَا الْبُرْنُسَ وَلَا السَّرَاوِيلَ ، وَلَا ثَوْبًا مَسَّهُ وَرْسٌ وَلَا زَعْفَرَانٌ ، وَلَا الْخُفَّيْنِ إِلَّا أَنْ لَا يَجِدَ نَعْلَيْنِ ، فَلْيَقْطَعْهُمَا حَتَّى يَكُونَا أَسْفَلَ مِنَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ " .
Salim reported on the authority of his father ('Abdullah bin 'Umar) that the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) was asked what a Muhrim should wear, whereupon he said: A Muhrim should not wear a shirt, or a turban, or a cap, or trousers, or a cloth touched with wars or with saffron, nor (should he wear) stockings, but in case he does not find shoes, but (before wearing stockings) be should trim them (in such a way) that these should become lower than the ankles.
Hadith 1180
حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ ، قَالَا : أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ . ح وحَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ خَشْرَمٍ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءٌ ، أَنَّ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ يَعْلَى بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ يَعْلَى كَانَ يَقُولُ لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ : لَيْتَنِي أَرَى نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ يُنْزَلُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْجِعْرَانَةِ ، وَعَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَوْبٌ قَدْ أُظِلَّ بِهِ عَلَيْهِ ، مَعَهُ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ فِيهِمْ عُمَرُ ، إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ عَلَيْهِ جُبَّةُ صُوفٍ مُتَضَمِّخٌ بِطِيبٍ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، كَيْفَ تَرَى فِي رَجُلٍ أَحْرَمَ بِعُمْرَةٍ فِي جُبَّةٍ بَعْدَ مَا تَضَمَّخَ بِطِيبٍ ؟ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَاعَةً ، ثُمَّ سَكَتَ فَجَاءَهُ الْوَحْيُ ، فَأَشَارَ عُمَرُ بِيَدِهِ إِلَى يَعْلَى بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ تَعَالَ ، فَجَاءَ يَعْلَى فَأَدْخَلَ رَأْسَهُ فَإِذَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُحْمَرُّ الْوَجْهِ ، يَغِطُّ سَاعَةً ثُمَّ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ ، فَقَالَ : " أَيْنَ الَّذِي سَأَلَنِي عَنِ الْعُمْرَةِ آنِفًا " ، فَالْتُمِسَ الرَّجُلُ فَجِيءَ بِهِ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَمَّا الطِّيبُ الَّذِي بِكَ فَاغْسِلْهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ، وَأَمَّا الْجُبَّةُ فَانْزِعْهَا ، ثُمَّ اصْنَعْ فِي عُمْرَتِكَ مَا تَصْنَعُ فِي حَجِّكَ " .
Safwan bin Ya'la bin Umayya reported that Ya'la used to say to 'Umar bin Khattab (RA) : Would that I see revelation descending upon the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) . (Once) when the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) was in Ji'rana and there was a cloth which provided shade over him, and there were his Companions with him. 'Umar being one of them, there came a person with a cloak of wool on him daubed with perfume and he said: Messenger of Allah, what about the person who entered upon the state of Ihram with a cloak after daubing it with perfume? The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) looked at him for a short while, and then became quiet, and revelation began descending upon him, and 'Umar gestured (with his hand) to Ya'la b Umayya to come. Ya'la came and he entered his head beneath the cloth and saw the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) with his face red, and breathing with a snore. Then he felt relieved (of that burden) and he said: Where is the man who was just asking me about 'Umrah? The man was searched for and he was brought, and the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said: So far as the perfume is concerned, wash it three times, and remove the cloak too (as it was sewn) and do in 'Umrah as you do in Hajj.
