Book of Knowing the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)
تُوُفِّيَ أَبُو الْهَيْثَمِ فِي خِلَافَةِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ
Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) died during the caliphate of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)

وحدثنا (4) إبراهيم بن إسماعيل بن أبي حَبيبة، سمعتُ شيوخَ أهلِ الدارِ - يعني بني عبد الأشْهَل - يقولون مات أبو الهيثَم بن التَّيهان سنة عشرين بالمدينة (5).
It is reported from the elders of Banu Abd al-Ashhal that Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the year 20 AH in Madinah.

(5) وهو عند ابن سعد في "طبقاته" 3/ 413 عن محمد بن عمر الواقدي، به وزاد الواقدي: هذا أثبت عندنا ممَّن روى أن أبا الهيثم شهد صفّين مع علي بن أبي طالب، وقُتل يومئذٍ، ولم أرَ أحدًا من أهل العلم قبلنا يعرف ذلك ولا يُثبته، والله أعلم.
Reference / Source: (5) It is in "al-Tabaqat" of Ibn Sa'd (3/ 413), narrated from Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There al-Waqidi added: "In our view this is more firmly established than the report of those who narrated that Abu al-Haytham was present at Siffin with Ali bin Abi Talib and was killed on that day. I have not seen anyone of the people of knowledge before us who knew of that or affirmed it, and Allah knows best."
