1 جَفَّ الْقَلَمُ بِالشَّقِيِّ وَالسَّعِيدِ، وَفُرِغَ مِنْ أَرْبَعٍ: مِنَ الْخُلُقِ وَالْخَلْقِ، وَالْأَجَلِ، وَالرِّزْقِ

The pen has dried regarding the wretched and the happy, and four things are finished: character, creation, lifespan, and provision

1 hadith (601 — 601)

2 فَرَغَ اللَّهُ إِلَى كُلِّ عَبْدٍ مِنِ خَمْسٍ: مِنْ عَمَلِهِ، وَأَجَلِهِ، وَأَثَرِهِ، وَرِزْقِهِ وَمَضْجَعِهِ لَا يَتَعَدَّاهُنَّ عَبْدٌ

Allah has decreed for every servant five things: his deeds, his lifespan, his effect, his provision, and his resting place; no servant can go beyond them

3 قَدْ جَفَّ الْقَلَمُ بِمَا أَنْتَ لَاقٍ

The pen has dried regarding what you will encounter

4 تَجِدُونَ مِنْ شَرِّ النَّاسِ ذَا الْوَجْهَيْنِ يَأْتِي هَؤُلَاءِ بِوَجْهٍ وَهَؤُلَاءِ بِوَجْهٍ

You will find the worst of people is the two-faced, who comes to these with one face and to those with another

5 يَذْهَبُ الصَّالِحُونَ أَسْلَافًا الْأَوَّلَ فَالْأَوَّلَ، حَتَّى لَا يَبْقَى إِلَّا حُثَالَةٌ كَحُثَالَةِ التَّمْرِ وَالشَّعِيرِ لَا يُبَالِي اللَّهُ بِهِمْ

The righteous will depart, one after another, until only the dregs remain, like the dregs of dates and barley, whom Allah does not care about

6 يُبْصِرُ أَحَدُكُمُ الْقَذَى فِي عَيْنِ أَخِيهِ وَيَدَعُ الْجِذْعَ فِي عَيْنِهِ

One of you sees the speck in his brother's eye and leaves the log in his own eye

7 كَبُرَتْ خِيَانَةً أَنْ تُحَدِّثَ أَخَاكَ حَدِيثًا هُوَ لَكَ بِهِ مُصَدِّقٌ وَأَنْتَ لَهُ كَاذِبٌ

It is a great betrayal to tell your brother something he believes from you while you are lying to him

8 «كَأَنَّ الْحَقَّ فِيهَا عَلَى غَيْرِنَا وَجَبَ، وَكَأَنَّ الْمَوْتَ فِيهَا عَلَى غَيْرِنَا كُتِبَ، وَكَأَنَّ الَّذِينَ نُشَيِّعُ مِنَ الْأَمْوَاتِ سَفْرٌ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ إِلَيْنَا عَائِدُونَ، نُبَوِّئُهُمْ أَجْدَاثُهُمْ وَنَأْكُلُ تُرَاثَهُمْ كَأَنَّا مُخَلَّدُونَ بَعْدَهُمْ، قَدْ نَسِينَا كُلَّ وَاعِظَةٍ، وَأَمِنَّا كُلَّ جَائِحَةٍ، طُوبَى لِمَنْ شَغَلَهُ عَيْبُهُ عَنْ عُيُوبِ النَّاسِ، وَأَنْفَقَ مِنْ مَالٍ اكْتَسَبَهُ مِنْ غَيْرِ مَعْصِيَةٍ وَخَالَطَ أَهْلَ الْفِقْهِ الْحِكْمَةِ، وَجَانَبَ أَهْلَ الذُّلِّ وَالْمَعْصِيَةِ، طُوبَى لِمَنْ ذَلَّ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَحَسُنَتْ خَلِيقَتُهُ، وَأَنْفَقَ الْفَضْلَ مِنْ مَالِهِ، وَأَمْسَكَ الْفَضْلَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِ، وَوَسِعَتْهُ السُّنَّةُ وَلَمْ يَعْدُهَا إِلَى الْبِدْعَةِ»

It is as if the truth is obligatory on others, and as if death is written for others, and as if those we bury will soon return to us; we put them in their graves and eat their inheritance as if we will live forever after them. We have forgotten every admonition and feel safe from every calamity. Glad tidings to the one whose own faults occupy him from the faults of others, who spends from wealth earned without sin, keeps company with people of knowledge and wisdom, avoids people of humiliation and sin, is humble in himself, has good character, spends the surplus of his wealth, holds back the surplus of his speech, is content with the Sunnah and does not go beyond it to innovation

9 طُوبَى لِمَنْ طَابَ كَسْبُهُ، وَصَلُحَتْ سَرِيرَتُهُ، وَكَرُمَتْ عَلَانِيَتُهُ، وَعَزَلَ عَنِ النَّاسِ شَرَّهُ، طُوبَى لِمَنْ عَمِلَ بِعِلْمِهِ

Glad tidings to the one whose earnings are pure, whose inner state is sound, whose outward is honorable, who keeps his harm away from people, and who acts upon his knowledge

10 طُوبَى لِمَنْ هُدِيَ لِلْإِسْلَامِ، وَكَانَ عَيْشُهُ كَفَافًا وَقَنَعَ

Glad tidings to the one guided to Islam, whose life is sufficient and is content

11 ابْنَ آدَمَ عِنْدَكَ مَا يَكْفِيكَ وَأَنْتَ تَطْلُبُ مَا يُطْغِيكَ، ابْنَ آدَمَ لَا بِقَلِيلٍ تَقْنَعُ، وَلَا مِنْ كَثِيرٍ تَشْبَعُ

O son of Adam, you have what suffices you, yet you seek what will make you transgress; O son of Adam, you are not content with little, nor satisfied with much

12 اشْفَعُوا تُؤْجَرُوا

Intercede and you will be rewarded

13 سَافِرُوا تَصِحُّوا وَتَغْنَمُوا

Travel and you will be healthy and prosper

14 يَسِّرُوا وَلَا تُعَسِّرُوا، وَسَكِّنُوا وَلَا تُنَفِّرُوا

Make things easy and do not make them difficult; calm people and do not drive them away

Be moderate and aim for what is right

Record knowledge in writing

21 أَقِلَّ مِنَ الدَّيْنِ تَكُنْ حُرًّا، وَأَقِلَّ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ يَهُنْ عَلَيْكَ الْمَوْتُ، وَانْظُرْ فِي أَيِّ نِصَابٍ تَضَعُ وَلَدَكَ فَإِنَّ الْعِرْقَ دَسَّاسٌ.

Reduce debt to be free, reduce sins to make death easy, and consider in what lineage you place your child, for lineage is influential

22 «كُنَّ وَرِعًا تَكُنْ أَعْبُدَ النَّاسِ، وَكُنَّ قَنِعًا تَكُنْ أَشْكَرَ النَّاسِ، وَأَحْبِبِ لِلنَّاسِ مَا تُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِكَ تَكُنْ مُؤْمِنًا، وَأَحْسِنْ مُجَاوَرَةَ مَنْ جَاوَرَكَ تَكُنْ مُسْلِمًا»

Be pious and you will be the most devout of people; be content and you will be the most grateful; love for people what you love for yourself and you will be a believer; be good to your neighbor and you will be a Muslim

3 hadith (639 — 641)

23 أَبَا هِرٍّ أَحْسِنْ جِوَارَ مَنْ جَاوَرَكَ تَكُنْ مُسْلِمًا وَأَحْسَنْ مُصَاحَبَةِ مَنْ صَاحَبَكَ تَكُنْ مُؤْمِنًا، وَاعْمَلْ بِفَرَائِضِ اللَّهِ تَكُنْ عَابِدًا، وَارْضَ بِقَسْمِ اللَّهِ تَكُنْ زَاهِدًا

O Abu Hurairah, be good to your neighbor and you will be a Muslim; be good to your companion and you will be a believer; fulfill Allah’s obligations and you will be a worshipper; be content with Allah’s decree and you will be ascetic

24 ازْهَدْ فِي الدُّنْيَا يُحِبُّكَ اللَّهُ، وَازْهَدْ فِيمَا فِي أَيْدِي النَّاسِ يُحِبُّكَ النَّاسُ

Renounce the world and Allah will love you; renounce what is in people’s hands and people will love you

25 كُنَّ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَأَنَّكَ غَرِيبٌ أَوْ كَأَنَّكَ عَابِرُ سَبِيلٍ، وَعَدَّ نَفْسَكَ فِي أَصْحَابِ الْقُبُورِ

Be in this world as if you are a stranger or a traveler, and count yourself among the inhabitants of the graves

26 «دَعْ مَا يَرِيبُكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُكُ»

Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt

27 انْصُرْ أَخَاكَ ظَالِمًا أَوْ مَظْلُومًا

Help your brother whether he is an oppressor or oppressed

28 ارْحَمْ مَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكَ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ

Show mercy to those on earth and the One in the heavens will show mercy to you

29 اسْمَحْ يُسْمَحْ لَكَ

Be lenient and leniency will be shown to you

30 أَسْبِغِ الْوُضُوءَ يَزِدْ فِي عُمُرِكَ، وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتِكَ يَكْثُرْ خَيْرُ بَيْتِكَ

Perfect your ablution and your life will be prolonged; greet your family and the good of your house will increase

31 اسْتَعْفِفْ عَنِ السُّؤَالِ مَا اسْتَطَعْتَ

Abstain from asking as much as you can

32 قُلِ الْحَقَّ وَإِنْ كَانَ مُرًّا

Speak the truth even if it is bitter

33 «اتَّقِ اللَّهَ حَيْثُ كُنْتَ، وَأَتْبِعِ السَّيِّئَةَ الْحَسَنَةَ تَمْحُهَا، وَخَالِقِ النَّاسَ بِخُلُقٍ حَسَنٍ»

Fear Allah wherever you are, follow a bad deed with a good one to erase it, and treat people with good character

34 بُلُّوا أَرْحَامَكُمْ وَلَوْ بِالسَّلَامِ

Maintain ties of kinship even if only with greetings

35 تَهَادَوْا تَزْدَادُوا حُبًّا، وَهَاجِرُوا تُورِثُوا أَبْنَاءَكُمْ مَجْدًا، وَأَقِيلُوا الْكِرَامَ عَثَرَاتِهِمْ

Exchange gifts to increase love, migrate to leave a legacy for your children, and pardon the honorable for their slips

36 تَهَادَوْا فَإِنَّ الْهَدِيَّةَ تُذْهِبُ وَحَرَ الصَّدْرِ

Exchange gifts, for gifts remove ill will from the chest

37 تَهَادَوْا تَحَابُّوا

Exchange gifts and you will love one another

38 تَهَادَوْا بَيْنَكُمْ فَإِنَّ الْهَدِيَّةَ تُذْهِبُ بِالسَّخِيمَةِ

Exchange gifts among yourselves, for gifts remove malice

39 تَهَادَوْا فَإِنَّهُ يُضَعِّفُ الْحُبَّ وَيَذْهَبُ بِغَوَائِلِ الصَّدْرِ

Exchange gifts, for it increases love and removes ill feelings from the chest

40 تَهَادَوْا فَإِنَّ الْهَدِيَّةَ تَذْهَبُ بِالضَّغَائِنِ

Exchange gifts, for gifts remove grudges

41 اطْلُبُوا الْخَيْرَ عِنْدَ حِسَانِ الْوُجُوهِ

Seek goodness from those with beautiful faces

42 بَلِّغُوا عَنِّي وَلَوْ آيَةً، وَحَدِّثُوا عَنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ وَلَا حَرَجَ

Convey from me even if only one verse, and narrate from the Children of Israel without harm

43 اتَّقُوا فِرَاسَةَ الْمُؤْمِنِ فَإِنَّهُ يَنْظُرُ بِنُورِ اللَّهِ

Beware the insight of the believer, for he sees with Allah’s light

44 اتَّقُوا الْحَرَامَ فِي الْبُنْيَانِ فَإِنَّهُ أَسَاسُ الْخَرَابِ

Beware of unlawful earnings in building, for it is the foundation of ruin

Honor your children and improve their manners

Speak good and you will benefit, remain silent from evil and you will be safe

Choose well for your offspring

Give your hearts rest from time to time

Act, for everyone is facilitated for what he was created

Marry loving, fertile women

Take the pre-dawn meal, for there is blessing in suhoor

Treat women well, for they are captives with you

Protect your wealth with zakat, treat your sick with charity, and prepare for calamity with supplication

60 «اغْتَنِمُوا الدُّعَاءَ عِنْدَ الرِّقَّةِ فَإِنَّهَا رَحْمَةٌ»

Seize the opportunity of supplication at times of tenderness, for it is mercy

Persist in saying: O Possessor of Majesty and Honor

Seek provision in the hidden places of the earth

Free yourselves from worldly worries as much as you can

Measure your food and it will be blessed for you

Seek virtue among the merciful of my Ummah, you will live among their kindness

66 اطْلُبُوا الْخَيْرَ دَهْرَكُمْ

Seek goodness throughout your life

67 اجْمَعُوا وُضُوءَكُمْ جَمَعَ اللَّهُ شَمْلَكُمْ

Gather for ablution and Allah will unite you

68 «نَوِّرُوا بِالْفَجْرِ فَإِنَّهُ أَعْظَمُ لِلْأَجْرِ» ،

Pray Fajr in its brightness, for it is greater in reward

Wipe yourselves with the earth, for it is kind to you

Leave people, Allah provides for some through others

Seek help for your affairs by keeping them secret

72 اسْتَعِينُوا عَلَى إِنْجَاحِ الْحَوَائِجِ بِالْكِتْمَانِ لَهَا

Seek help for the success of your needs by keeping them secret

73 الْتَمِسُوا الْجَارَ قَبْلَ شِرَاءِ الدَّارِ

Seek the neighbor before buying the house

74 «تَدَاوَوْا فَإِنَّ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ الدَّاءَ أَنْزَلَ الدَّوَاءَ»

Seek treatment, for the One who sent down the disease sent down the cure

75 «احْثُوا فِي وَجْهِ الْمَدَّاحِينَ التُّرَابَ»

Throw dust in the faces of those who flatter

76 أَحْسِنُوا إِذَا وُلِّيتُمْ، وَاعْفُوا عَمَّا مَلَكْتُمْ

Do good when you are in charge, and pardon those under your authority

77 أَطْعِمُوا طَعَامَكُمُ الْأَتْقِيَاءَ، وَأُولُوا مَعْرُوفَكُمُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Feed your food to the pious, and give your favors to the believers

78 «اسْتَعِيذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ طَمَعٍ يَهْدِي إِلَى طَبْعٍ»

Seek refuge in Allah from greed that leads to bad character

79 أَجْمِلُوا فِي طَلَبِ الدُّنْيَا

Be moderate in seeking the world

80 أَصْلِحُوا دُنْيَاكُمْ، وَاعْمَلُوا لِآخِرَتِكُمْ

Set your affairs in this world right, and work for your Hereafter

Spread peace and you will be safe

Honor me regarding my companions, for they are the best of my nation

Repent to your Lord before you die

Overlook the punishment of people of dignity as long as it is not a legal penalty

Look to those below you

Remove harm from the path of Muslims and your good deeds will increase

100 أَحْبِبْ حَبِيبَكَ هَوَّنًا مَا

Love your beloved moderately

101 أُوصِيكَ بِتَقْوَى اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهُ رَأْسُ أَمْرِكَ

I advise you to fear Allah, for it is the root of your affair

102 اقْرَأِ الْقُرْآنَ مَا نَهَاكَ

Recite the Qur'an as long as it prevents you (from evil)

103 أَدِّ الْأَمَانَةَ إِلَى مَنِ ائْتَمَنَكَ

Return the trust to the one who entrusted you

104 أَعْطُوا الْأَجِيرَ أَجْرَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَجِفَّ عَرَقُهُ

Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries

105 احْفَظِ اللَّهَ يَحْفَظْكَ

Guard Allah and He will guard you

106 عِشْ مَا شِئْتَ فَإِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ

Live as you wish, for you will die

107 اصْنَعِ الْمَعْرُوفَ إِلَى مَنْ هُوَ أَهْلُهُ

Do good to those who deserve it

108 اشْتَدِّي أَزْمَةٌ تَنْفَرِجِي

Hardship, intensify and then be relieved

109 أَنْفِقْ يَا بِلَالُ، وَلَا تَخْشَ مِنْ ذِي الْعَرْشِ إِقْلَالًا

Spend, O Bilal, and do not fear poverty from the Lord of the Throne

110 بَشِّرِ الْمَشَّائِينَ فِي ظُلَمِ اللَّيْلِ إِلَى الْمَسَاجِدِ بِالنُّورِ التَّامِّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Give glad tidings to those who walk to the mosques in the darkness of night of perfect light on the Day of Resurrection

111 «عَلَيْكَ بِذَاتِ الدِّينِ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكَ»

Choose the religious woman, may your hands be dusty

112 عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ الْأَعْمَالِ بِمَا تُطِيقُونَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَمَلُّ حَتَّى تَمَلُّوا

Do of deeds what you are able, for Allah does not tire until you tire

113 إِذَا وَزَنْتُمْ فَأَرْجِحُوا

When you weigh, give extra

When a noble person of a people comes to you, honor him

When a visitor comes to you, honor him

When you are angry, be silent

117 إِذَا أَحَبَّ أَحَدُكُمْ أَخَاهُ فَلْيُعْلِمْهُ

If one of you loves his brother, let him inform him

118 «إِذَا بُويِعَ لِخَلِيفَتَيْنِ فَاقْتُلُوا الْآخَرَ مِنْهُمَا»

If allegiance is given to two caliphs, kill the latter of them

119 «إِذَا تَمَنَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَنْظُرْ مَا يَتَمَنَّى فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي مَا كُتِبَ لَهُ مِنْ أُمْنِيَّتِهِ»

When one of you wishes, let him consider what he wishes, for he does not know what is decreed for him in his wish

Whoever is moderate will never be impoverished

122 مَا نُزِعَتِ الرَّحْمَةُ إِلَّا مِنْ شَقِيٍّ

Mercy is only removed from the wretched

123 مَا شَقِيَ عَبْدٌ قَطِّ بِمَشُورَةٍ

No servant is ever ruined by consultation

124 مَا خَابَ مَنِ اسْتَخَارَ

Whoever seeks guidance from Allah is never disappointed

125 مَا آمَنَ بِالْقُرْآنِ مَنِ اسْتَحَلَّ مَحَارِمَهُ

He does not believe in the Qur'an who makes its prohibitions lawful

126 مَا رُزِقَ الْعَبْدُ رِزْقًا أَوْسَعَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ

No servant is given a provision more ample than patience

127 مَا خَالَطَتِ الصَّدَقَةُ مَالًا إِلَّا أَهْلَكَتْهُ

Charity does not mix with wealth except it destroys it

128 مَا نَقَصَ مَالٌ مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ

Wealth is never decreased by charity

129 مَا تَرَكْتُ بَعْدِي فِتْنَةً أَضَرُّ عَلَى الرِّجَالِ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ

I have not left after me any trial more harmful to men than women

130 مَا أَصَرَّ مَنِ اسْتَغْفَرَ وَلَوْ عَادَ فِي الْيَوْمِ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً

Whoever seeks forgiveness does not persist (in sin), even if he returns to it seventy times a day

131 مَا أَحْسَنَ عَبْدٌ الصَّدَقَةَ إِلَّا أَحْسَنَ اللَّهُ الْخِلَافَةَ عَلَى تَرِكَتِهِ

No servant gives charity well except that Allah makes his heirs good

132 مَا رَأَيْتُ مِثْلَ النَّارِ نَامَ هَارِبُهَا، وَلَا مِثْلَ الْجَنَّةِ نَامَ طَالِبُهَا

I have not seen anything like the Fire whose escapee sleeps, nor like Paradise whose seeker sleeps

133 مَا كَانَ الرِّفْقُ فِي شَيْءٍ إِلَّا زَانَهُ

Gentleness is not in anything except it beautifies it

134 مَا اسْتَرْذَلَ اللَّهُ عَبْدًا قَطُّ إِلَّا حَظَرَ عَنْهُ الْعِلْمَ وَالْأَدَبَ

Allah never despises a servant except He withholds knowledge and manners from him

135 مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ مِنْ دَاءٍ إِلَّا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ لَهُ شِفَاءً

Allah has not sent down any disease except He sent down its cure

136 «مَا زَانَ اللَّهُ عَبْدًا بِزِينَةٍ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ عَفَافٍ فِي دِينِهِ وَفَرْجِهِ»

Allah has not adorned a servant with a better adornment than chastity in his religion and private parts

137 مَا عَظُمَتْ نِعْمَةُ اللَّهِ عَلَى عَبْدٍ إِلَّا عَظُمَتْ مُؤْنَةُ النَّاسِ عَلَيْهِ

Whenever Allah increases a servant in blessings, the people's needs from him increase

138 مَا سَتَرَ اللَّهُ عَلَى عَبْدٍ فِي الدُّنْيَا ذَنْبًا فَيُعَيِّرُهُ بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Allah does not cover a servant's sin in this world and then disgrace him for it on the Day of Judgment
