Musnad of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith 12100
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا تَبَرَّزَ لِحَاجَتِهِ ، أَتَيْتُهُ بِمَاءٍ فَيَغْسِلُ بِهِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would go to relieve himself, I would present water and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform istinja (cleaning) with it.
Hadith 12101
(حديث مرفوع) قُرِئَ عَلَى سُفْيَانَ ، سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ جُدْعَانَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " لَصَوْتُ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ فِي الْجَيْشِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ فِئَةٍ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: In the army, the voice of Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) is better than that of many people.
Hadith 12102
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا كَانَ أَرْحَمَ بِالْعِيَالِ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ مُسْتَرْضَعًا فِي عَوَالِي الْمَدِينَةِ ، فَكَانَ يَنْطَلِقُ وَنَحْنُ مَعَهُ ، فَيَدْخُلُ الْبَيْتَ وَإِنَّهُ لَيُدَّخَنُ ، وَكَانَ ظِئْرُهُ قَيْنًا ، فَيَأْخُذُهُ فَيُقَبِّلُهُ ، ثُمَّ يَرْجِعُ ، قَالَ عَمْرٌو : فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ابْنِي ، وَإِنَّهُ مَاتَ فِي الثَّدْيِ ، فَإِنَّ لَهُ ظِئْرَيْنِ يُكْمِلَانِ رَضَاعَهُ فِي الْجَنَّةِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that I have not found anyone more compassionate towards his family than the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Hazrat Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) was a nursing child in the suburbs of Madinah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go to visit him, and we would also be with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter that house, it would be filled with smoke because the lady of the house's husband was a blacksmith. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would hold him, kiss him, and after a while, return. When Hazrat Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Ibrahim was my son, who died in childhood. Two wet nurses have been appointed for him who will complete his nursing period in Paradise."
Hadith 12103
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ الْجَارُودِ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : صَنَعَ بَعْضُ عُمُومَتِي لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَعَامًا ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي أُحِبُّ أَنْ تَأْكُلَ فِي بَيْتِي ، وَتُصَلِّيَ فِيهِ ، قَالَ : " فَأَتَاهُ وَفِي الْبَيْتِ فَحْلٌ مِنْ تِلْكَ الْفُحُولِ ، فَأَمَرَ بِجَانِبٍ مِنْهُ ، فَكُنِسَ وَرُشَّ ، فَصَلَّى وَصَلَّيْنَا مَعَهُ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that one of my uncles once invited the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for a meal and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I wish that you eat food at my house and pray there." So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came. There was a mat in the house which had become old and black. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered it to be placed in a corner, it was dusted and water was sprinkled on it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed there and we also prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
Hadith 12104
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، أَنَّ أَنَسًا حَدَّثَهُمْ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " مَا بَالُ أَقْوَامٍ يَرْفَعُونَ أَبْصَارَهُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ " ، فَاشْتَدَّ قَوْلُهُ فِي ذَلِكَ حَتَّى قَالَ : " لَيَنْتَهُنَّ عَنْ ذَلِكَ ، أَوْ لَتُخْطَفَنَّ أَبْصَارُهُمْ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What is the matter with people that during prayer they raise their eyes towards the sky and look? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) strongly forbade this and said: People should refrain from this, otherwise their eyesight will be taken away.
Hadith 12105
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، وَابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَبْرٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَالْمَرْأَةُ مِنْ نِسَائِهِ يَغْتَسِلَانِ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ وَاحِدٍ ، وَكَانَ يَغْتَسِلُ بِخَمْسِ مَكَاكِيَّ ، وَيَتَوَضَّأُ بِمَكُّوكٍ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his honorable wife used to perform ghusl from the same vessel. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform ghusl with five makook of water and perform wudu with one makook of water.
Hadith 12106
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، أَنَّ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ حَدَّثَهُمْ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَعِدَ أُحُدًا ، فَتَبِعَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرُ ، وَعُثْمَانُ ، فَرَجَفَ بِهِمْ الْجَبَلُ ، فَقَالَ : " اسْكُنْ ، عَلَيْكَ نَبِيٌّ ، وَصِدِّيقٌ ، وَشَهِيدَانِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) climbed Mount Uhud, and behind him were Hazrat Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them). Suddenly, the mountain began to shake. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O mountain! Be still, for upon you are a Prophet, a Siddiq, and two martyrs."
Hadith 12107
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَقُولَ : " يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ، ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ " ، قَالَ : فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، آمَنَّا بِكَ ، وَبِمَا جِئْتَ بِهِ ، فَهَلْ تَخَافُ عَلَيْنَا ؟ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، إِنَّ الْقُلُوبَ بَيْنَ أُصْبُعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُقَلِّبُهَا " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to frequently supplicate: "O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion." Once we said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We have believed in you and in what you have brought; do you fear anything concerning us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Yes! For the hearts are between two of the fingers of Allah, He turns them as He wills."
Hadith 12108
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ يُضْحِكُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ ، قَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ مَعَهَا خِنْجَرٌ ! ، فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا تَصْنَعِينَ بِهِ يَا أُمَّ سُلَيْمٍ ؟ ، قَالَتْ : أَرَدْتُ إِنْ دَنَا مِنِّي أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ طَعَنْتُهُ بِهِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Hunain, Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) came to make the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laugh and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Look at Umm Sulaim, she has a dagger with her." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked her, "O Umm Sulaim! What will you do with it?" She replied, "If any polytheist comes near me, I will rip open his belly with it."
Hadith 12109
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، عَنْ بُشَيْرِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، قَالَ : قُلْنَا لِأَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ : مَا أَنْكَرْتَ مِنْ حَالِنَا فِي عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ ، قَالَ : " أَنْكَرْتُ أَنَّكُمْ لَا تُقِيمُونَ الصُّفُوفَ " .
Bashir bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once we asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), "What change do you notice between the conditions of the Prophetic era and our conditions?" He replied, "What amazes me is that you people do not straighten your rows."
Hadith 12110
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا ، فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever deliberately attributes a false statement to me, he should make his abode in Hell.
Hadith 12111
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مِسْحَاجٌ الضَّبِّيُّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، يَقُولُ : " كُنَّا إِذَا كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاة وَالسَّلَامُ فِي سَفَرٍ ، فَقُلْنَا : زَالَتْ الشَّمْسُ ، أَوْ لَمْ تَزُلْ ، صَلَّى الظُّهْرَ ، ثُمَّ ارْتَحَلَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when we were on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to say: Has the sun passed its zenith or not? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would depart after offering the Zuhr prayer.
Hadith 12112
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ جِبْرِيلُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ حَزِينٌ قَدْ خُضِبَ بِالدِّمَاءِ ، ضَرَبَهُ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ لَهُ : مَا لَكَ ؟ ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ لَهُ : فَعَلَ بِي هَؤُلَاءِ وَفَعَلُوا ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ لَهُ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام : أَتُحِبُّ أَنْ أُرِيَكَ آيَةً ؟ ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : فَنَظَرَ إِلَى شَجَرَةٍ مِنْ وَرَاءِ الْوَادِي ، فَقَالَ : ادْعُ بِتِلْكَ الشَّجَرَةِ ، فَدَعَاهَا فَجَاءَتْ تَمْشِي ، حَتَّى قَامَتْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : مُرْهَا فَلْتَرْجِعْ ، فَأَمَرَهَا فَرَجَعَتْ إِلَى مَكَانِهَا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " حَسْبِي " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in grief and was covered in blood. Some people of Makkah had beaten him. Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) asked, "What has happened to you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "These people have treated me in this way." Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, "Would you like me to show you a miracle?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied in the affirmative. Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) looked towards a tree behind the valley and said, "Call that tree." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called it, so it came walking and stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) said, "Now order it to go back." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered it, so it went back. Seeing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "This is enough for me."
Hadith 12113
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ التَّيْمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كَانَ يَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ ، وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to supplicate: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from incapacity, laziness, cowardice, old age, miserliness, and the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.
Hadith 12114
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : خَطَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ : " أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ زَيْدٌ فَأُصِيبَ ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَهَا جَعْفَرٌ فَأُصِيبَ ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَهَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ فَأُصِيبَ ، وَإِنَّ عَيْنَيْهِ لَتَذْرِفَانِ ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَهَا خَالِدٌ مِنْ غَيْرِ إِمْرَةٍ فَفَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ ، وَمَا يَسُرُّنِي أَنَّهُمْ عِنْدَنَا " ، أَوْ قَالَ : " مَا يَسُرُّهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ عِنْدَنَا " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us during a sermon that Zaid took the flag but was martyred, then Ja'far took it but he too was martyred, then Abdullah bin Rawaha took it but he too was martyred, then Khalid bin Walid took the flag without any commandership and Allah granted victory to the Muslims at his hands, and I am not pleased that they had remained with us.
Hadith 12115
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ زَاذَوَيْهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ : " نُهِينَا ، أَوْ قَالَ : أُمِرْنَا أَنْ لَا نَزِيدَ أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ عَلَى وَعَلَيْكُمْ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us that in reply to the greeting of the People of the Book, do not say anything more than "Wa Alaikum."
Hadith 12116
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَتْ صَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُتَقَارِبَةً ، وَصَلَاةُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، حَتَّى مَدَّ عُمَرُ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that all the prayers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were almost equal in length, and similarly, the prayers of Hazrat Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him) were also so, but Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) started making the Fajr prayer lengthy.
Hadith 12117
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ : هَلْ قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ ، ثُمَّ سُئِلَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى هَلْ قَنَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ ؟ ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، بَعْدَ الرُّكُوعِ يَسِيرًا " .
Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a person asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited Qunoot Nazilah. He replied, "Yes! After bowing (ruku’)." The same question was asked again: "Did he recite Qunoot Nazilah in the Fajr prayer?" He replied, "Yes! For some time, he recited it after bowing (ruku’)."
Hadith 12118
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ شَعْرُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى أَنْصَافِ أُذُنَيْهِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would reach halfway down his ears.
Hadith 12119
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا حُمَيْدٌ الطَّوِيلُ , عَنْ أَنَسٍ , قَالَ : سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ وَقْتِ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ ؟ ، قَالَ : " فَأَمَرَ بِلَالًا حِينَ طَلَعَ الْفَجْرُ فَأَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ ، ثُمَّ أَسْفَرَ مِنَ الْغَدِ حَتَّى أَسْفَرَ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ عَنْ وَقْتِ صَلَاةِ الْغَدَاةِ ؟ مَا بَيْنَ هَاتَيْنِ ، أَوْ قَالَ : هَذَيْنِ وَقْتٌ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the time of Fajr. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed Hazrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) at the time of the rising of Fajr and the prayer was established. Then the next day, he led the prayer when it was quite bright and said, "Where is the one who asked about the time of Fajr prayer?" The time for Fajr prayer is between these two times.
Hadith 12120
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ النَّحْرِ : " مَنْ كَانَ ذَبَحَ قَبْلَ الصَّلَاةِ فَلْيُعِدْ " ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، هَذَا يَوْمٌ يُشْتَهَى فِيهِ اللَّحْمُ ، وَذَكَرَ هَنَةً مِنْ جِيرَانِهِ ، فَكَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَدَّقَهُ ، قَالَ : وَعِنْدِي جَذَعَةٌ هِيَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ شَاتَيْ لَحْمٍ ، قَالَ : فَرَخَّصَ لَهُ ، فَلَا أَدْرِي بَلَغَتْ رُخْصَتُهُ مَنْ سِوَاهُ ، أَمْ لَا ؟ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ انْكَفَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاة وَالسَّلَامُ إِلَى كَبْشَيْنِ فَذَبَحَهُمَا ، وَقَامَ النَّاسُ إِلَى غُنَيْمَةٍ فَتَوَزَّعُوهَا ، أَوْ قَالَ فَتَجَزَّعُوهَا ، هَكَذَا قَالَ أَيُّوبُ .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Eid al-Adha: Whoever has offered the sacrifice before the prayer should offer the sacrifice again. Upon hearing this, a man stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This is a day in which people generally desire meat." Then he mentioned the case of one of his neighbors, and it seemed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) affirmed him. Then he said, "I have a six-month-old lamb, which is more beloved to me than the meat of two goats." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted him to sacrifice it. Now, I do not know whether this permission is for others as well or not. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards his two rams and slaughtered them. The people were standing in anticipation of "war booty," so they divided it among themselves.
Hadith 12121
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ ، حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ عَلَيْهِ الصَّلَاة وَالسَّلَامُ شَرِبَ ، وَعَنْ يَمِينِهِ أَعْرَابِيٌّ ، وَعَنْ يَسَارِهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَنَاوَلَهُ الأعرابي ، وَقَالَ : " الْأَيْمَنَ فَالْأَيْمَنَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank milk: On the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a Bedouin, and on the left side was Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the vessel of milk to the Bedouin and said: First to the one on the right, then to the one after him.
Hadith 12122
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ نَوْفَلِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : دَخَلْنَا عَلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، فَقُلْنَا : حَدِّثْنَا بِمَا سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ : " ثَلَاثٌ مَنْ كُنَّ فِيهِ حَرُمَ عَلَى النَّارِ ، وَحَرُمَتْ النَّارُ عَلَيْهِ : إِيمَانٌ بِاللَّهِ ، وَحُبُّ اللَّهِ ، وَأَنْ يُلْقَى فِي النَّارِ فَيُحْرَقَ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ أَنْ يَرْجِعَ فِي الْكُفْرِ " .
Nawfal bin Masood, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once we were present in the service of Hazrat Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, and we requested him to narrate to us a hadith which he had heard directly from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: There are three things, whoever possesses them, the fire of Hell will be forbidden for him, and the fire of Hell will be forbidden upon him: faith in Allah, love for Allah, and that falling into the fire and being burned is more beloved to him than returning to disbelief.
Hadith 12123
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : مَرَّ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِحَائِطٍ لِبَنِي النَّجَّارِ ، فَسَمِعَ صَوْتًا مِنْ قَبْرٍ ، فَقَالَ : " مَتَى مَاتَ صَاحِبُ هَذَا الْقَبْرِ ؟ " ، قَالُوا : مَاتَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَقَالَ : " لَوْلَا أَنْ لَا تَدَافَنُوا ، لَدَعَوْتُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يُسْمِعَكُمْ عَذَابَ الْقَبْرِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once went to a garden of Banu Najjar in Madinah Munawwarah. There, a sound was heard from a grave. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired about it and asked when the deceased had been buried in that grave. People replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This person was buried during the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was astonished at this and said, "If you people did not stop burying your dead, I would have prayed to Allah to make you hear the punishment of the grave."
Hadith 12124
(حديث موقوف) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الطَّائِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنِي بُشَيْرُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ أَنَسٌ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ ، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ : مَا أَنْكَرْتَ مِنَّا مِنْ عَهْدِ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؟ ، فَقَالَ " مَا أَنْكَرْتُ مِنْكُمْ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ أَنَّكُمْ لَا تُقِيمُونَ صُفُوفَكُمْ " .
Bashir bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once we asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), "What change do you perceive between the conditions of the Prophetic era and our conditions?" He replied, "What amazes me is that you people do not straighten your rows."
Hadith 12125
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو التَّيَّاحِ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " الْبَرَكَةُ فِي نَوَاصِي الْخَيْلِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Blessing has been placed in the forelocks of horses.
Hadith 12126
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، حَدَّثَنَي أَبُو التَّيَّاحِ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اسْمَعُوا وَأَطِيعُوا ، وَإِنْ اسْتُعْمِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ حَبَشِيٌّ كَأَنَّ رَأْسَهُ زَبِيبَةٌ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Listen and obey, even if an Abyssinian whose head is like a raisin is appointed as your governor.
Hadith 12127
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَرَّ بِرَجُلٍ وَهُوَ يُهَادَى بَيْنَ ابْنَيْهِ ، قَالُوا : نَذَرَ أَنْ يَمْشِيَ ، قَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنْ تَعْذِيبِ هَذَا لِنَفْسِهِ ، فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَرْكَبَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man walking with the support of his two sons’ shoulders. He asked, “What is the matter with him?” They informed him that he had vowed to perform Hajj on foot. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Allah is free of need from this that this person should put himself in hardship.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to ride, so he rode.
Hadith 12128
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : " أُقِيمَتْ الصَّلَاةُ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَجِيٌّ لِرَجُلٍ حَتَّى نَعَسَ ، أَوْ كَادَ يَنْعَسُ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the time for prayer arrived, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was conversing in private with a man in the mosque, until some people began to fall asleep.
Hadith 12129
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ أَنَسٌ عَنْ صَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِاللَّيْلِ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : " مَا كُنَّا نَشَاءُ أَنْ نَرَاهُ مُصَلِّيًا إِلَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ ، وَلَا نَائِمًا إِلَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ " .
Humaid says that a person asked Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) about the night prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he replied that whenever we wanted to see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying at night, we could see him, and whenever we intended to see him sleeping, we could also see that.
Hadith 12130
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ بِالْبَقِيعِ ، فَنَادَى رَجُلٌ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ، فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : لَمْ أَعْنِكَ ، قَالَ : " تَسَمَّوْا بِاسْمِي ، وَلَا تَكَنَّوْا بِكُنْيَتِي " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in Jannat al-Baqi', when a man called out to someone by saying "Abu al-Qasim." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned around and looked back, so the man said, "I did not mean you." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Name yourselves after my name, but do not take my kunyah (patronymic) as your kunyah."
Hadith 12131
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ حَمَّادٍ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَمَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ : " مَنْ قَتَلَ كَافِرًا ، فَلَهُ سَلَبُهُ " ، قَالَ : فَقَتَلَ أَبُو طَلْحَةَ عِشْرِينَ .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) announced on the day of the Battle of Hunayn that whoever kills a disbeliever, his equipment will belong to him. Accordingly, Hazrat Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) killed twenty men.
Hadith 12132
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ فَرُّوخَ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ يَعْنِي الْأَنْصَارِيَّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ ، يَقُولُ : دَخَلَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ الْمَسْجِدَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَبَالَ ، فَنَهَوْهُ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " دَعُوهُ ، وَأَمَرَ أَنْ يُصَبَّ عَلَيْهِ ، أَوْ أُهَرِيقَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءُ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once during the Prophetic era, a Bedouin came and urinated in the Prophet's Mosque. The people tried to stop him, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Leave him," and ordered that a bucket of water be poured over it.
Hadith 12133
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَزْرَةُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ ثُمَامَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " يَتَنَفَّسُ فِي إِنَائِهِ ثَلَاثًا " ، وَكَانَ أَنَسٌ يَتَنَفَّسُ ثَلَاثًا .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to drink water in three breaths, and Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) himself would also take three breaths.
Hadith 12134
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ الْأَخْضَرِ بْنِ عَجْلَانَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْحَنَفِيُّ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ الْحَاجَةَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا عِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ ؟ " فَأَتَاهُ بِحِلْسٍ وَقَدَحٍ ، وَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ يَشْتَرِي هَذَا ؟ " ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : أَنَا آخُذُهُمَا بِدِرْهَمٍ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ يَزِيدُ عَلَى دِرْهَمٍ ؟ " فَسَكَتَ الْقَوْمُ ، فَقَالَ : مَنْ يَزِيدُ عَلَى دِرْهَمٍ ؟ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : أَنَا آخُذُهُمَا بِدِرْهَمَيْنِ ، قَالَ : " هُمَا لَكَ " ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " إِنَّ الْمَسْأَلَةَ لَا تَحِلُّ إِلَّا لِأَحَدِ ثَلَاثٍ ذِي دَمٍ مُوجِعٍ ، أَوْ غُرْمٍ مُفْظِعٍ ، أَوْ فَقْرٍ مُدْقِعٍ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that an Ansari came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and complained about his poverty. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, "Do you have anything?" He brought a bowl and a mat. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who will buy these?" A man said, "I will buy both these things for one dirham." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Who will give more than one dirham?" The people remained silent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated the announcement. Then a man said, "I will buy both these things for two dirhams." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Both these things are yours." Then he said, "Asking (begging) is only permissible in one of three cases: the person who is near death, the debt that shakes a person, and the poverty that makes one sit on the ground (destitute)."
Hadith 12135
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، " أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرَ ، وَعُثْمَانَ كَانُوا يَفْتَتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the three Caliphs (may Allah be pleased with them) used to begin the recitation in prayer with "Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alamin."
Hadith 12136
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : " كُنَّا نُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَغْرِبَ ، ثُمَّ يَجِيءُ أَحَدُنَا إِلَى بَنِي سَلِمَةَ وَهُوَ يَرَى مَوَاقِعَ نَبْلِهِ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that we used to perform the Maghrib prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then one of us would go to the people of Banu Salamah, and at that time he could still clearly see the place where his arrow would fall.
Hadith 12137
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : كَانَ لِأَبِي طَلْحَةَ ابْنٌ ، يُقَالُ لَهُ : أَبُو عُمَيْرٍ ، فَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُضَاحِكُهُ ، قَالَ : فَرَآهُ حَزِينًا ، فَقَالَ : " يَا أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ ، مَا فَعَلَ النُّغَيْرُ ؟ " .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hazrat Abu Talha's (may Allah be pleased with him) son—whose name was Abu Umair—used to joke and play with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him sad and said, "O Abu Umair! What happened to the Nughair (the little bird that had died)?"
Hadith 12138
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : سُئِلَ أَنَسٌ عَنْ بَيْعِ الثَّمَرِ ؟ ، فَقَالَ : نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " عَنْ بَيْعِ ثَمَرَةِ النَّخْلِ حَتَّى تَزْهُوَ " ، قِيلَ لِأَنَسٍ : مَا تَزْهُو ؟ ، قَالَ : تَحْمَرُّ .
Humaid, may Allah have mercy on him, used to say that a person asked Hazrat Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, about the sale of fruits, so he replied that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the sale of fruits before they ripen.
Hadith 12139
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، وَأَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، وَقَالَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، قَالَ : " جَلَدَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْخَمْرِ بِالْجَرِيدِ وَالنِّعَالِ " ، وَجَلَدَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، قَالَ يَحْيَى فِي حَدِيثِهِ أَرْبَعِينَ : فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُمَرُ ودَنَا النَّاسُ مِنَ الرِّيفِ وَالْقُرَى ، قَالَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ : مَا تَرَوْنَ ؟ ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ : اجْعَلْهَا كَأَخَفِّ الْحُدُودِ ، فَجَلَدَ عُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ .
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) punished for drinking alcohol with branches and shoes. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) gave (forty lashes), but when during the caliphate of Hazrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) people came close to various cities and towns (and their influences began to appear among them), Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked his companions, "What is your opinion regarding this?" Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the opinion that the punishment should be fixed equal to the lowest prescribed limit, so Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) fixed the punishment for drinking alcohol at eighty lashes.
