It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The month is sometimes twenty-nine days, so do not fast until you see the crescent, and do not celebrate Eid until you see it. If clouds cover you, then estimate." Nafi' says that for this reason, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to send someone to look for the crescent after the twenty-ninth of Sha'ban. If the crescent was sighted, it was fine; if it was not sighted and there were no clouds or dust, then he would not fast the next day. But if there were clouds or dust, he would fast.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever drags his clothes on the ground out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him with mercy on the Day of Resurrection." Sayyida Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) (according to Nafi‘, may Allah have mercy on him) asked: "What about us? (Because women’s clothes are long and usually the lower part of the trousers touches the ankles.)" He said: "Raise your garment by a handspan." She again asked: "Then our feet will become visible?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not add more than a handspan (that much is excused)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the sale of Muzabana. Muzabana means selling dates that are still on the trees according to a fixed estimate, and saying: "If more comes out, it is mine, and if less comes out, it is still mine." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that Sayyiduna Ziyad bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me, that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted the sale of 'Ariya with estimation.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once a man asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! What do you command us regarding the night prayer?" He replied: "You should pray in sets of two rak'ahs, and when you fear that morning is near, then add one rak'ah to those two. We are returning in repentance, in prostration, in worship, and returning while praising our Lord. Allah has fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and defeated all the armies alone.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once some Jews brought a man and a woman from among themselves who had committed adultery, and they presented them before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What punishment is prescribed in your book (the Torah) for this?" They said: "We blacken their faces and disgrace them." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are lying. In the Torah, the punishment for this is stoning. Bring the Torah and recite it to me if you are truthful." So they brought the Torah and also brought along a blind reciter whose name was Ibn Suriya. He began to read the Torah, and when he reached the verse of stoning, he placed his hand over it. When he was asked to remove his hand, and he did so, the verse of stoning was shining there. Seeing this, the Jews themselves said, "O Muhammad! In it is the command of stoning; we ourselves used to conceal it among ourselves." In any case, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), both of them were stoned. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that he saw that Jew bending over the woman to shield her from the stones.

Nafi’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) gave his wife a divorce while she was in her menstrual period. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this issue. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he should take her back and wait until she has another menstrual period and becomes pure from it, then before approaching her, he may divorce her. This is the method by which Allah has permitted men to divorce their wives. It was the practice of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he was asked about a man who divorces his wife during her menstrual period, he would say: I had given my wife one or two divorces, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to take her back and wait for another menstrual period and then for her to become pure, then before approaching her, to divorce her. But you have given your wife three divorces; you have disobeyed the command of Allah regarding how He has instructed you to divorce your wives, and your wife has become separated from you.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that I know that in the blessed era of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), land used to be given on rent in exchange for grass and a small amount of straw, the exact amount of which I do not remember. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) himself used to give land on rent during the eras of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and in the early period of the rule of Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). However, in the later period of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he came to know that Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates the prohibition of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding giving land on rent. So he went to him, and I was with him. He asked Sayyiduna Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) about this matter, and he replied: Yes! The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade giving land on rent. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) abandoned this practice and thereafter never gave land on rent to anyone. And when someone would ask him, he would say that Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) holds the opinion that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade giving land on rent.
