Hadith 3628
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ ، عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ . . . مِثْلَهُ .
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 3629
حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ والأعمش ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ ، عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ ، قَالَا : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : " إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يَرَى ذُنُوبَهُ كَأَنَّهُ فِي أَصْلِ جَبَلٍ يَخَافُ أَنْ يَقَعَ عَلَيْهِ ، وَإِنَّ الْفَاجِرَ يَرَى ذُنُوبَهُ كَذُبَابٍ وَقَعَ عَلَى أَنْفِهِ " ، فَقَالَ بِهِ هَكَذَا ، فَطَارَ . قَالَ : قَالَ : وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَلَّهُ أَفْرَحُ بِتَوْبَةِ أَحَدِكُمْ ، مِنْ رَجُلٍ خَرَجَ بِأَرْضٍ دَوِّيَّةٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدِيثَيْنِ : أَحَدَهُمَا عَنْ نَفْسِهِ ، وَالْآخَرَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَهْلَكَةٍ ، مَعَهُ رَاحِلَتُهُ ، عَلَيْهَا زَادُهُ وَطَعَامُهُ وَشَرَابُهُ وَمَا يُصْلِحُهُ ، فَأَضَلَّهَا ، فَخَرَجَ فِي طَلَبِهَا ، حَتَّى إِذَا أَدْرَكَهُ الْمَوْتُ ، قَالَ : أَرْجِعُ إِلَى مَكَانِي الَّذِي أَضْلَلْتُهَا فِيهِ ، فَأَمُوتُ فِيهِ ، قَالَ : فَرَجَعَ ، فَغَلَبَتْهُ عَيْنُهُ ، فَاسْتَيْقَظَ ، فَإِذَا رَاحِلَتُهُ عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ عَلَيْهَا زَادُهُ وَطَعَامُهُ وَشَرَابُهُ وَمَا يُصْلِحُهُ " .
Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A believer considers his sins as if he is in the hollow of a mountain and fears that the mountain may fall upon him, while a wicked person considers his sins as if a fly sat on his nose, he waved it away and it flew off. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah is more pleased with the repentance of any one of you than that person who, while traveling through a desolate and deadly land, has his riding animal with him on which is his food and drink, his provisions and necessities, and suddenly they are lost. He goes out in search of them, and when he feels that his death is near but cannot find his mount, he says in his heart: I will return to the place where my camel was lost, and there I will die. So he returns to his place, falls asleep there, and when he wakes up, he finds his mount standing by his head, with his food, drink, provisions, and all his necessities on it."
Hadith 3630
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا تُقْتَلُ نَفْسٌ ظُلْمًا ، إِلَّا كَانَ عَلَى ابْنِ آدَمَ الْأَوَّلِ كِفْلٌ مِنْ دَمِهَا ، لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ سَنَّ الْقَتْلَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is killed unjustly in the world, the sin of it also falls upon the first son of Adam (Qabil), because he was the one who established the practice of killing."
Hadith 3631
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ وابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ . ح وَيَحْيَى ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، حَدَّثَنِي عُمَارَةُ ، حَدَّثَنِي الْأَسْوَدُ الْمَعْنَى ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ ، عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : لَا يَجْعَلُ أَحَدُكُمْ لِلشَّيْطَانِ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ جُزْءًا ، لَا يَرَى إِلَّا أَنَّ حَقًا عَلَيْهِ أَنْ لَا يَنْصَرِفَ إِلَّا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ ، لَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَإِنَّ " أَكْثَرَ انْصِرَافِهِ لَعَلَى يَسَارِهِ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: None of you should give the devil any power over himself, not even equal to a portion, and he should not think that it is necessary for him to return only from the right side. I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that his return was often from the left side.
Hadith 3632
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ بَدْرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا تَقُولُونَ فِي هَؤُلَاءِ الْأَسْرَى ؟ " قَالَ : فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَوْمُكَ وَأَهْلُكَ ، اسْتَبْقِهِمْ ، وَاسْتَأْنِ بِهِمْ ، لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمْ ، قَالَ : وَقَالَ عُمَرُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَخْرَجُوكَ وَكَذَّبُوكَ ، قَرِّبْهُمْ فَاضْرِبْ أَعْنَاقَهُمْ ، قَالَ : وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، انْظُرْ وَادِيًا كَثِيرَ الْحَطَبِ ، فَأَدْخِلْهُمْ فِيهِ ، ثُمَّ أَضْرِمْ عَلَيْهِمْ نَارًا ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ : قَطَعْتَ رَحِمَكَ ، قَالَ : فَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَلَمْ يَرُدَّ عَلَيْهِمْ شَيْئًا ، قَالَ : فَقَالَ نَاسٌ : يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، وَقَالَ نَاسٌ : يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ عُمَرَ ، وَقَالَ نَاسٌ : يَأْخُذُ بِقَوْلِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ رَوَاحَةَ ، قَالَ : فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَيُلِينُ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ ، حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَلْيَنَ مِنَ اللَّبَنِ ، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَيَشُدُّ قُلُوبَ رِجَالٍ فِيهِ ، حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَشَدَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ ، وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَمَثَلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام ، قَالَ : فَمَنْ تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي ، وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ سورة إبراهيم آية 36 ، وَمَثَلَكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ كَمَثَلِ عِيسَى ، قَالَ : إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ ، وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ سورة المائدة آية 118 ، وَإِنَّ مَثَلَكَ يَا عُمَرُ كَمَثَلِ نُوحٍ ، قَالَ : رَبِّ لا تَذَرْ عَلَى الأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا سورة نوح آية 26 ، وَإِنَّ مِثْلَكَ يَا عُمَرُ كَمَثَلِ مُوسَى ، قَالَ : رَبِّ اشْدُدْ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُوا حَتَّى يَرَوْا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ ، أَنْتُمْ عَالَةٌ ، فَلَا يَنْفَلِتَنَّ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا بِفِدَاءٍ ، أَوْ ضَرْبَةِ عُنُقٍ " ، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، إِلَّا سُهَيْلُ ابْنُ بَيْضَاءَ ، فَإِنِّي قَدْ سَمِعْتُهُ يَذْكُرُ الْإِسْلَامَ ، قَالَ : فَسَكَتَ ، قَالَ : فَمَا رَأَيْتُنِي فِي يَوْمٍ ، أَخْوَفَ أَنْ تَقَعَ عَلَيَّ حِجَارَةٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ حَتَّى قَالَ : " إِلَّا سُهَيْلُ ابْنُ بَيْضَاءَ " ، قَالَ : فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الأَرْضِ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللَّهُ يُرِيدُ الآخِرَةَ وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ لَوْلا كِتَابٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ سورة الأنفال آية 67 - 68 .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Battle of Badr had taken place, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), “What is your opinion regarding these captives?” Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! These are your own people and family, let them live and try to win their hearts, perhaps Allah Almighty will turn towards them. Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! These people expelled you and denied you, call them near and strike their necks. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawaha (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Find a valley where there is plenty of wood, put them in that valley and set the wood on fire. At this, Abbas said: You have severed the ties of kinship. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went inside without giving any answer. Some people said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would act upon the opinion of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), some preferred the opinion of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and some expressed preference for the opinion of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawaha (may Allah be pleased with him). After a short while, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out and said, “Allah softens the hearts of some people in His matter until they become softer than milk, and He hardens the hearts of some people until they become harder than stone. And Abu Bakr! Your example is like that of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who said: Whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me, then surely You are Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. And Abu Bakr! Your example is like that of Isa (peace be upon him), who said: If You punish them, they are Your servants, and if You forgive them, surely You are the Mighty, the Wise. And Umar! Your example is like that of Nuh (peace be upon him), who said: My Lord! Leave not upon the earth any dwelling of the disbelievers. And Umar! Your example is like that of Musa (peace be upon him), who prayed: My Lord! Harden their hearts so that they do not believe until they see the painful punishment. You people are in need, and none of them will return except by ransom or being killed.” Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that it slipped from my mouth: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Except Suhail bin Bayda, for I have heard him mention Islam. At this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Never did I fear more than on that day that a stone might fall upon me from the sky, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself said: “Except Suhail bin Bayda.” Then Allah revealed this verse: «﴿مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللّٰهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ وَاللّٰهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ o لَوْلَا كِتَابٌ مِنَ اللّٰهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ﴾ [الأنفال : 67-68]» “It is not for a Prophet to have captives until he has made a great slaughter in the land. You desire the goods of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise. Had it not been for a prior decree from Allah, a severe punishment would have touched you for what you took (of ransom).”
Hadith 3633
حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَمْرٍو ، حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ . . . فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " إِلَّا سُهَيْلُ ابْنُ بَيْضَاءَ " ، وَقَالَ فِي قَوْلِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ : قَالَ : فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، عِتْرَتُكَ وَأَصْلُكَ وَقَوْمُكَ ، تَجَاوَزْ عَنْهُمْ ، يَسْتَنْقِذْهُمْ اللَّهُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ ، قَالَ : وَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَنْتَ بِوَادٍ كَثِيرِ الْحَطَبِ ، فَأَضْرِمْهُ نَارًا ، ثُمَّ أَلْقِهِمْ فِيهِ ، فَقَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ : قَطَعَ اللَّهُ رَحِمَكَ .

Hadith 3634
حَدَّثَنَاه حُسَيْنٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَازِمٍ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ . . . فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ ، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ : فَقَامَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَحْشٍ ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَعْدَاءُ اللَّهِ ، كَذَّبُوكَ ، وَآذَوْكَ ، وَأَخْرَجُوكَ ، وَقَاتَلُوكَ ، وَأَنْتَ بِوَادٍ كَثِيرِ الْحَطَبِ ، فَاجْمَعْ لَهُمْ حَطَبًا كَثِيرًا ، ثُمَّ أَضْرِمْهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ، وَقَالَ : سَهْلُ ابْنُ بَيْضَاءَ .

Hadith 3635
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنْ خِشْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " جَعَلَ الدِّيَةَ فِي الْخَطَإِ أَخْمَاسًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fixed the blood money for accidental killing by dividing it into five parts.
Hadith 3636
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الْهَجَرِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَيْسَ الْمِسْكِينُ بِالطَّوَّافِ ، وَلَا بِالَّذِي تَرُدُّهُ التَّمْرَةُ وَلَا التَّمْرَتَانِ ، وَلَا اللُّقْمَةُ وَلَا اللُّقْمَتَانِ ، وَلَكِنْ الْمِسْكِينُ الْمُتَعَفِّفُ الَّذِي لَا يَسْأَلُ النَّاسَ شَيْئًا ، وَلَا يُفْطَنُ لَهُ فَيُتَصَدَّقَ عَلَيْهِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who goes around in the streets, returning with one or two dates or one or two morsels, is not the real needy person. The real needy person is the dignified one who does not ask people for anything, nor does he let people realize that he is in need so that someone might give him charity."
Hadith 3637
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ عُمَارَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " صَلَّى صَلَاةً إِلَّا لِمِيقَاتِهَا ، إِلَّا صَلَاتَيْنِ صَلَاةَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ بِجَمْعٍ ، وَصَلَاةَ الْفَجْرِ يَوْمَئِذٍ ، قَبْلَ مِيقَاتِهَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing a prayer outside its prescribed time, except at Muzdalifah, where I saw him combining Maghrib and 'Isha, and on that day, performing Fajr earlier or later than its usual time.
Hadith 3638
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ ، فَإِنَّ الصِّدْقَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْبِرِّ ، وَإِنَّ الْبِرَّ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ ، وَمَا يَزَالُ الرَّجُلُ يَصْدُقُ حَتَّى يُكْتَبَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ صِدِّيقًا ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْكَذِبَ ، فَإِنَّ الْكَذِبَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْفُجُورِ ، وَإِنَّ الْفُجُورَ يَهْدِي إِلَى النَّارِ ، وَمَا يَزَالُ الرَّجُلُ يَكْذِبُ ، وَيَتَحَرَّى الْكَذِبَ ، حَتَّى يُكْتَبَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ كَذَّابًا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Adhere to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A person continues to speak the truth and strives for truthfulness until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful one (Siddiq). And beware of lying, for lying leads to sin, and sin leads to the Fire. A person continues to lie and pursues falsehood until he is recorded with Allah as a liar (Kadhdhab)."
Hadith 3639
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَنَا فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ ، وَلَأُنَازَعَنَّ أَقْوَامًا ، ثُمَّ لَأُغْلَبَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ ، فَأَقُولُ : يَا رَبِّ أَصْحَابِي ، فَيَقُولُ : إِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي مَا أَحْدَثُوا بَعْدَكَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will wait for you at the Hawd (Pond) of Kawthar. At that time, there will be a dispute regarding some people and I will be overpowered. I will say: My Lord! (They are) my companions? It will be said: 'You do not know what new things they invented after you.'"
Hadith 3640
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ عَلَيْكُمْ أُمَرَاءُ ، وَتَرَوْنَ أَثَرَةً " ، قَالَ : قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، فَمَا يَصْنَعُ مَنْ أَدْرَكَ ذَاكَ مِنَّا ؟ قَالَ : " أَدُّوا الْحَقَّ الَّذِي عَلَيْكُمْ ، وَسَلُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي لَكُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon after me you will see favoritism and matters that you will dislike." The noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What should the one among us who encounters that time do?" He said: "Fulfill the duties that are obligatory upon you and ask Allah for your rights."
Hadith 3641
(حديث مرفوع) سَمِعْت يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّكُمْ سَتَرَوْنَ بَعْدِي أَثَرَةً ، وَأُمُورًا تُنْكِرُونَهَا " ، قَالَ : قُلْنَا : مَا تَأْمُرُنَا ؟ قَالَ : " أَدُّوا إِلَيْهِمْ حَقَّهُمْ ، وَسَلُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّكُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon after me you will see favoritism and matters that you will dislike." The noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What should the one among us who encounters that time do?" Hadith 3642
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ مُضَرِّبٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ لِابْنِ النَّوَّاحَةِ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " لَوْلَا أَنَّكَ رَسُولٌ لَقَتَلْتُكَ " ، فَأَمَّا الْيَوْمَ فَلَسْتَ بِرَسُولٍ ، يَا خَرَشَةُ ، قُمْ فَاضْرِبْ عُنُقَهُ ، قَالَ : فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَضَرَبَ عُنُقَهُ .
Harithah bin Mudarrib narrates that once Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Ibn Nawahah, "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say about you: 'If you were not a messenger, I would have killed you.'" Today you are not a messenger. Khurshah! Get up and strike off his neck." So Khurshah got up and struck off his neck.
Hadith 3643
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ يُسَيْرِ بْنِ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : هَاجَتْ رِيحٌ حَمْرَاءُ بِالْكُوفَةِ ، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ لَيْسَ لَهُ هِجِّيرَى إِلَّا : يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، جَاءَتْ السَّاعَةُ ! قَالَ : وَكَانَ مُتَّكِئًا فَجَلَسَ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَا تَقُومُ ، حَتَّى لَا يُقْسَمَ مِيرَاثٌ ، وَلَا يُفْرَحَ بِغَنِيمَةٍ ، قَالَ : عَدُوًّا يَجْمَعُونَ لِأَهْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ ، وَيَجْمَعُ لَهُمْ أَهْلُ الْإِسْلَامِ ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، قَالَ : جَاءَهُمْ الصَّرِيخُ : أَنَّ الدَّجَّالَ قَدْ خَلَفَ فِي ذَرَارِيِّهِمْ ، فَيَرْفُضُونَ مَا فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ وَيُقْبِلُونَ ، فَيَبْعَثُونَ عَشَرَةَ فَوَارِسَ طَلِيعَةً ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنِّي لَأَعْرِفُ أَسْمَاءَهُمْ ، وَأَسْمَاءَ آبَائِهِمْ ، وَأَلْوَانَ خُيُولِهِمْ ، هُمْ خَيْرُ فَوَارِسَ عَلَى ظَهَرِ الْأَرْضِ يَوْمَئِذٍ " ، أَوْ قَالَ " هُمْ مِنْ خَيْرِ فَوَارِسَ عَلَى ظَهَرِ الْأَرْضِ يَوْمَئِذٍ " .
Yasir bin Jabir says that once a red wind blew in Kufa. A man came to Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), whose only call was: "O Abdullah bin Mas'ud! Has the Hour drawn near?" At that time, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was reclining on a pillow. Hearing this, he sat up straight and said: "The Hour will not be established until inheritance is no longer distributed and there is no joy over war booty. There will be an enemy who will gather his forces against the Muslims, and the Muslims will gather their forces against them . . . . . " Then the narrator mentioned the entire hadith, and at the end said: "A caller will come and say: 'The Dajjal has entered among your children from behind you.' So, upon hearing this, they will throw away everything they have and turn towards the Dajjal, and they will send ten horsemen as a vanguard. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I know their names, the names of their fathers, and the colors of their horses. At that time, they will be the best horsemen on earth.'"
Hadith 3644
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ : كُنْتُ لَا أُحْجَبُ عَنِ النَّجْوَى ، وَلَا عَنْ كَذَا ، وَلَا عَنْ كَذَا ، قَالَ ابْنُ عَوْنٍ : فَنَسِيَ وَاحِدَةً ، وَنَسِيتُ أَنَا وَاحِدَةً ، قَالَ : فَأَتَيْتُهُ وَعِنْدَهُ مَالِكُ بْنُ مُرَارَةَ الرَّهَاوِيُّ ، فَأَدْرَكْتُ مِنْ آخِرِ حَدِيثِهِ ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَدْ قُسِمَ لِي مِنَ الْجِمَالِ مَا تَرَى ، فَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ أَحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ فَضَلَنِي بِشِرَاكَيْنِ فَمَا فَوْقَهَما ، أَفَلَيْسَ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْبَغْيُ ؟ قَالَ : " لَا ، لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ بِالْبَغْيِ ، وَلَكِنَّ الْبَغْيَ مَنْ بَطِرَ قَالَ : أَوْ قَالَ : سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ ، وَغَمَطَ النَّاسَ " .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I did not feel any barrier regarding whispering, nor regarding such and such thing. The narrator says that my teacher forgot one thing and I forgot another. Once I came to my teacher and Malik bin Murarah Rahawi was also present there. I found him narrating at the end of the hadith: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You can see how many camels have come into my share. I do not want anyone to surpass me by even two or four straps in this number. Is this arrogance? He said: “This is not arrogance. Arrogance is that a person rejects the truth and looks down upon people.”
Hadith 3645
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَجْلَانَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَوْنٌ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : إِذَا حُدِّثْتُمْ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَدِيثًا ، فَظُنُّوا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَهْيَاهُ ، وَأَهْدَاهُ ، وَأَتْقَاهُ .
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when a hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is narrated before you, then assume about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that which is based on correctness, guidance, and piety.
Hadith 3646
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنِي سُلَيْمَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ ، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ قَائِمًا ، حَتَّى هَمَمْتُ بِأَمْرٍ سُوءٍ ، قُلْنَا : وَمَا هَمَمْتَ بِهِ ؟ قَالَ : هَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَجْلِسَ وَأَدَعَهُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at night. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood for so long that I began to intend something bad in my heart. His students asked: What did you intend? He replied: That I would sit down and leave the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) standing.
Hadith 3647
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي زُبَيْدٌ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " سِبَابُ الْمُسْلِمِ فُسُوقٌ ، وَقِتَالُهُ كُفْرٌ " ، قَالَ : قُلْتُ لِأَبِي وَائِلٍ : أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : نَعَمْ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abusing a Muslim is wickedness and fighting him is disbelief." The narrator says: I asked Abu Wa'il, "Did you hear this directly from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied: "Yes."
Hadith 3648
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنِي مَنْصُورٌ ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا مِنْكُمْ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا وَقَدْ وُكِّلَ بِهِ قَرِينُهُ مِنَ الْجِنِّ ، وَقَرِينُهُ مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ " ، قَالُوا : وَإِيَّاكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : " وَإِيَّايَ ، وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَعَانَنِي عَلَيْهِ ، فَلَا يَأْمُرُنِي إِلَّا بِحَقٍّ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For each one of you, a companion from among the jinn and a companion from among the angels has been appointed." The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Even with you?" He replied: "Yes! But Allah has helped me against him, so now he only commands me to speak the truth."
Hadith 3649
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ ، أَنَّ مُجَاهِدًا أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ أَخْبَرَهُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا جُلُوسًا فِي مَسْجِدِ الْخَيْفِ لَيْلَةَ عَرَفَةَ قَبْلَ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ ، إِذْ سَمِعْنَا حِسَّ الْحَيَّةِ ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " اقْتُلُوا " ، قَالَ : فَقُمْنَا ، قَالَ : فَدَخَلَتْ شَقَّ جُحْرٍ ، فَأُتِيَ بِسَعَفَةٍ فَأُضْرِمَ فِيهَا نَارًا ، وَأَخَذْنَا عُودًا ، فَقَلَعْنَا عَنْهَا بَعْضَ الْجُحْرِ ، فَلَمْ نَجِدْهَا ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " دَعُوهَا ، وَقَاهَا اللَّهُ شَرَّكُمْ ، كَمَا وَقَاكُمْ شَرَّهَا " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were sitting in the Mosque of Khayf on the night of 'Arafah—which was before the Day of 'Arafah—when we sensed the sound of a snake. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill it." We stood up, and it slipped into a hole. A spark was brought and the hole was set on fire. Then we took a stick and started poking the hole with it, but we did not find the snake. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave it; Allah has saved it from your harm just as He has saved you from its harm."
Hadith 3650
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي قَيْسٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا " نَغْزُو مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْسَ لَنَا نِسَاءٌ ، فَقُلْنَا : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَلَا نَسْتَخْصِي ؟ ! فَنَهَانَا عَنْ ذَلِكَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that we used to participate in battles with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and there were no women with us. Once we said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Should we not get ourselves castrated? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade us from doing so.
Hadith 3651
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، حَدَّثَنِي قَيْسٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " لَا حَسَدَ إِلَّا فِي اثْنَيْنِ رَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ مَالًا ، فَسَلَّطَهُ عَلَى هَلَكَتِهِ فِي الْحَقِّ ، وَرَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ حِكْمَةً ، فَهُوَ يَقْضِي بِهَا ، وَيُعَلِّمُهَا النَّاسَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Envy (desirous admiration) is not permissible except in two cases: one is the person whom Allah has granted wealth and He enables him to spend it in the right way, and the other is the person whom Allah has granted wisdom and he judges with it among the people and teaches it to others."
Hadith 3652
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ أَبِي يَعْلَى ، عَنْ رَبِيْعِ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَنَّهُ خَطَّ خَطًّا مُرَبَّعًا ، وَخَطَّ خَطًّا وَسَطَ الْخَطِّ الْمُرَبَّعِ ، وَخُطُوطًا إِلَى جَنْبِ الْخَطِّ الَّذِي وَسَطَ الْخَطِّ الْمُرَبَّعِ ، وَخَطٌّ خَارِجٌ مِنَ الْخَطِّ الْمُرَبَّعِ ، قَالَ : " هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا هَذَا ؟ " ، قَالُوا : اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ، قَالَ : " هَذَا الْإِنْسَانُ ، الْخَطُّ الْأَوْسَطُ ، وَهَذِهِ الْخُطُوطُ الَّتِي إِلَى جَنْبِهِ الْأَعْرَاضُ تَنْهَشُهُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَكَانٍ ، إِنْ أَخْطَأَهُ هَذَا ، أَصَابَهُ هَذَا ، وَالْخَطُّ الْمُرَبَّعُ الْأَجَلُ الْمُحِيطُ بِهِ ، وَالْخَطُّ الْخَارِجُ الْأَمَلُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drew a square, then drew another line in the middle of it, and on the right and left of this middle line he drew some more lines, and he drew one line outside the square. He said to the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them): "Do you know what this is?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: "The line in the middle refers to a human being, the lines on its right and left are the diseases that keep attacking a person; if one misses, another hits. The square refers to a person's death which surrounds him, and the outer line refers to hope."
Hadith 3653
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنِ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ ، عَنْ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَصَابَ مِنَ امْرَأَةٍ قُبْلَةً ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ كَفَّارَتِهَا ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ : وَأَقِمِ الصَّلاةَ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ سورة هود آية 114 ، فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَلِي هَذِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ : " لِمَنْ عَمِلَ كَذَا مِنْ أُمَّتِي " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a man kissed a strange woman, then, feeling remorseful, he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask about its expiation. Upon this, Allah revealed this verse: « ﴿وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ طَرَفَيِ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِنَّ الْحَسَنَاتِ يُذْهِبْنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ﴾ [هود : 114]» "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at some hours of the night; indeed, good deeds erase bad deeds." He asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is this command specific to me? He replied: "No, rather this command is for every person of my Ummah who commits such an act."
Hadith 3654
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنِ التَّيْمِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا يَمْنَعَنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ أَذَانُ بِلَالٍ عَنْ سَحُورِهِ ، فَإِنَّهُ يُؤَذِّنُ أَوْ قَالَ : يُنَادِي لِيَرْجِعَ قَائِمُكُمْ ، وَيَنْتَبِهَ نَائِمُكُمْ ، لَيْسَ أَنْ يَقُولَ هَكَذَا وَضَمَّ يَدَهُ وَرَفَعَهَا ، وَلَكِنْ حَتَّى يَقُولَ هَكَذَا " ، وَفَرَّقَ يَحْيَى بَيْنَ السَّبَّابَتَيْنِ ، قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ : هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لَمْ أَسْمَعْهُ مِنْ أَحَدٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let not Bilal's call to prayer prevent you from eating the pre-dawn meal (suhoor), for he gives the call to prayer early so that those who are performing the night prayer may return and those who are sleeping may wake up (and eat suhoor). The true dawn does not appear like this," (the narrator joined his hands and raised them), "rather, it appears like this," and the narrator separated his two index fingers to demonstrate.
Hadith 3655
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَتِيقٍ ، عَنْ طَلْقِ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ ، عَنِ الْأَحْنَفِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " أَلَا هَلَكَ الْمُتَنَطِّعُونَ " ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ ، قَالَ يَحْيَى : فِي حَدِيثٍ طَوِيلٍ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Behold, those who engage in excessive argumentation have perished," and he said this three times.
Hadith 3656
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي سَعْدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " كَانَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ كَأَنَّهُ عَلَى الرَّضْفِ ، قُلْتُ : حَتَّى يَقُومَ ؟ قَالَ : حَتَّى يَقُومَ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to sit between the two rak'ahs as if he were sitting on a hot stone. I asked, "Until standing up?" He replied, "Yes!"
Hadith 3657
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَامِعُ بْنُ شَدَّادٍ ، ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَلْقَمَةَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، يَقُولُ : أَقْبَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ لَيْلًا ، فَنَزَلْنَا دَهَاسًا مِنَ الْأَرْضِ ، فَقَالَ : " مَنْ يَكْلَؤُنَا ؟ " ، فَقَالَ بِلَالٌ : أَنَا ، قَالَ : " إِذًا تَنَامَ " ، قَالَ : لَا ، فَنَامَ حَتَّى طَلَعَتْ الشَّمْسُ ، فَاسْتَيْقَظَ فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ ، فِيهِمْ عُمَرُ ، فَقَالَ : اهْضِبُوا ، فَاسْتَيْقَظَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : " افْعَلُوا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَفْعَلُونَ " ، فَلَمَّا فَعَلُوا ، قَالَ : " هَكَذَا ، فَافْعَلُوا لِمَنْ نَامَ مِنْكُمْ أَوْ نَسِيَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was returning from Hudaybiyyah at night, and we camped on soft ground. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Who will keep watch over us? (Who will wake us up for Fajr?)" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) offered himself. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "What if you also fall asleep?" He replied: "I will not sleep." Coincidentally, he too fell asleep until the sun had risen and so-and-so companions woke up, among them was Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He woke everyone up, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) also woke up and said: "Do as you used to do" (perform the prayer as usual). When the people had done so, he said: "If any of you sleeps or forgets, then do likewise."
Hadith 3658
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، حَدَّثَنِي زُبَيْدٌ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ " لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ ضَرَبَ الْخُدُودَ ، وَشَقَّ الْجُيُوبَ ، وَدَعَا بِدَعْوَى الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is not one of us who strikes his cheeks, tears his collar, and calls with the call of ignorance."
Hadith 3659
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ : " أُوتِيَ نَبِيُّكُمْ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَفَاتِيحَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ غَيْرَ خَمْسٍ : إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الأَرْحَامِ وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ مَاذَا تَكْسِبُ غَدًا وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَيِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ سورة لقمان آية 34 .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was given the keys to everything except five things. Then he recited this verse: «﴿إِنَّ اللّٰهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْأَرْحَامِ وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ مَاذَا تَكْسِبُ غَدًا وَمَا تَدْرِي نَفْسٌ بِأَيِّ أَرْضٍ تَمُوتُ إِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرٌ﴾ [لقمان : 34]» "The knowledge of the Hour is with Allah alone, He sends down the rain, He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it will die. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware."
Hadith 3660
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ زُهَيْرٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ وَعَلْقَمَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : أَنَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " يُكَبِّرُ فِي كُلِّ خَفْضٍ وَرَفْعٍ ، وَقِيَامٍ وَقُعُودٍ ، وَيُسَلِّمُ عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَعَنْ يَسَارِهِ ، حَتَّى يُرَى بَيَاضُ خَدَّيْهِ أَوْ خَدِّهِ ، وَرَأَيْتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرَ يَفْعَلَانِ ذَلِكَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying the takbeer every time he bowed, rose, stood, and sat, and he would turn to the right and left in such a way while saying salam that the whiteness of his blessed cheeks would be visible. And I saw Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) doing the same.
Hadith 3661
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي قُبَّةٍ نَحْوٌ مِنْ أَرْبَعِينَ ، فَقَالَ : " أَتَرْضَوْنَ أَنْ تَكُونُوا رُبُعَ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ ؟ " قُلْنَا : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " أَتَرْضَوْنَ أَنْ تَكُونُوا ثُلُثَ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ ؟ " قُلْنَا : نَعَمْ ، قَالَ : " وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ ، إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ تَكُونُوا نِصْفَ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ ، وَذَاكَ أَنَّ الْجَنَّةَ لَا يَدْخُلُهَا إِلَّا نَفْسٌ مُسْلِمَةٌ ، وَمَا أَنْتُمْ فِي الشِّرْكِ إِلَّا كَالشَّعْرَةِ الْبَيْضَاءِ فِي جِلْدِ ثَوْرٍ أَسْوَدَ ، أَوْ السَّوْدَاءِ فِي جِلْدِ ثَوْرٍ أَحْمَرَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a tent, about forty people in total. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you pleased and satisfied that you will be one fourth of the people of Paradise?" We replied: Yes! Then he asked: "Are you pleased to be one third?" We again replied in the affirmative. He said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise, because only that person will enter Paradise who is a Muslim, and your proportion among those who associate partners with Allah is like a white hair on the skin of a black ox, or a black hair on the skin of a red ox."
Hadith 3662
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : مَرَّ بِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَنَا أُصَلِّي ، فَقَالَ : " سَلْ تُعْطَهْ يَا ابْنَ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ " ، فَابْتَدَرَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ عُمَرُ : مَا بَادَرَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِلَى شَيْءٍ ، إِلَّا سَبَقَنِي إِلَيْهِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، فَسَأَلَاهُ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ ، فَقَالَ : مِنْ دُعَائِي الَّذِي لَا أَكَادُ أَدَعُ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ نَعِيمًا لَا يَبِيدُ ، وَقُرَّةَ عَيْنٍ لَا تَنْفَدُ ، وَمُرَافَقَةَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُحَمَّدٍ فِي أَعْلَى الْجَنَّةِ ، جَنَّةِ الْخُلْدِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was praying when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said from a distance: "O Ibn Umm 'Abd! Ask, you will be given." There was a competition between the two Shaykhs to convey this good news to me. Sayyiduna 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that whenever Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) competed with me in any matter, he always surpassed me. In any case, both of them asked him about his supplication, so he said that I never abandon this supplication: «اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ نَعِيمًا لَا يَبِيدُ وَقُرَّةَ عَيْنٍ لَا تَنْفَدُ وَمُرَافَقَةَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُحَمَّدٍ فِي أَعْلَى الْجَنَّةِ جَنَّةِ الْخُلْدِ» "O Allah! I ask You for such blessings that never end, for such coolness of the eyes that never ceases, and I ask You for the companionship of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the eternal Paradise."
Hadith 3663
(حديث مرفوع) سَمِعْت يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ وَهْبٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّكُمْ سَتَرَوْنَ بَعْدِي أَثَرَةً ، وَأُمُورًا تُنْكِرُونَهَا " ، قَالَ : قُلْنَا : وَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا ؟ قَالَ : " أَدُّوا إِلَيْهِمْ حَقَّهُمْ ، وَسَلُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّكُمْ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon after me, you will see favoritism and matters that you will dislike." The noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What should the one among us who encounters that time do?" He said: "Fulfill the duties that are obligatory upon you and ask Allah for your rights."
Hadith 3664
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ مُجَالِدٍ ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ ، قَالَ : أُقِيمَتْ الصَّلَاةُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ ، فَجِئْنَا نَمْشِي مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، فَلَمَّا رَكَعَ النَّاسُ ، رَكَعَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَكَعْنَا مَعَهُ ، وَنَحْنُ نَمْشِي ، فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ ، فَقَالَ : السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ رَاكِعٌ : صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ ، سَأَلَهُ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ : لِمَ قُلْتَ حِينَ سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكَ الرَّجُلُ صَدَقَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ؟ قَالَ : إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِ السَّاعَةِ ، إِذَا كَانَتْ التَّحِيَّةُ عَلَى الْمَعْرِفَةِ " .
Aswad bin Yazid says that once the prayer had been established in the mosque, we were going to join the rows with Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). When the people went into bowing (ruku'), Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) also went into ruku', and seeing him, we too performed ruku' while we were still walking. During this, a man passed by from the front and said: "As-salamu 'alayka ya Aba 'Abd al-Rahman!" In the state of ruku', he replied: "Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth." After the prayer, someone asked him, "When that person greeted you, why did you say that Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth?" He replied, "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'It is among the signs of the Hour that greeting (salam) will be given only to those who are known.'"
Hadith 3665
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ مِغْوَلٍ ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ ، عَنْ طَلْحَةَ ، عَنْ مُرَّةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " لَمَّا أُسْرِيَ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، انْتُهِيَ بِهِ إِلَى سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهَى ، وَهِيَ فِي السَّمَاءِ السَّادِسَةِ ، إِلَيْهَا يُنْتَهَ مَا يُعْرَجُ بِهِ مِنَ الْأَرْضِ ، فَيُقْبَضُ مِنْهَا ، وَإِلَيْهَا يُنْتَهَ مَا يُهْبَطُ بِهِ مِنْ فَوْقِهَا ، فَيُقْبَضُ مِنْهَا ، قَالَ : إِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَى سورة النجم آية 16 ، قَالَ : فِرَاشٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ، قَالَ : فَأُعْطِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَلَاثًا : أُعْطِيَ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسَ ، وَأُعْطِيَ خَوَاتِيمَ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ، وَغُفِرَ لِمَنْ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ أُمَّتِهِ شَيْئًا الْمُقْحِمَاتُ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the night when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken on the Mi'raj, he (peace be upon him) was also taken to Sidrat al-Muntaha, which is in the sixth heaven, and it is the utmost limit for those things that ascend from the earth; from there, those things are taken up, and the things that descend from the heaven also stop there, and from there they are taken down. And he said: "When that which covered the Sidrah covered it," what is meant by this is golden moths. In any case, on this occasion, three things were granted to the Prophet (peace be upon him): five prayers, the concluding verses of Surah al-Baqarah, and the glad tidings that every person of his ummah who does not associate anything with Allah will be forgiven.
Hadith 3666
(حديث مرفوع) حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ ، أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ زَاذَانَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَلَائِكَةً فِي الْأَرْضِ سَيَّاحِينَ ، يُبَلِّغُونِي مِنْ أُمَّتِي السَّلَامَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are some angels of Allah who roam about on the earth and convey to me the greetings of my Ummah."
