It is narrated that once, on a Friday, people had gathered in the central mosque of Kufa. At that time, Sayyiduna ‘Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) was the governor of Kufa on behalf of Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was the treasurer. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the shadow and it had reached the length of a strap. He said, “If your companion (the governor) wants to act upon the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he will come out now.” By Allah! Sayyiduna Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) had not even finished his statement when Sayyiduna ‘Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) came out saying, “Prayer, prayer!”

Aswad says that once, at noon, I was present with Alqamah in the company of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). The prayer was established, so both of us stood behind him. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) took me by one hand and my companion by the other hand and pulled us forward until each of us was at a corner, and he himself stood between us. Then he said that when there were three people, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do the same. Then, after leading us in prayer, he said: Soon there will come rulers who will delay the prayer from its appointed time. Do not wait for them, and join them with the intention of nafl (supererogatory) prayer.

Abu Shurayh Khuza'i, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani, may Allah be pleased with him, there was a solar eclipse. At that time, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, was also in Madinah Munawwarah. Sayyiduna Uthman Ghani, may Allah be pleased with him, came out and led the people in the eclipse prayer, performing two bowings (ruku) and two prostrations (sajdah) in each rak'ah. After leading the prayer, he returned to his home, while Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, sat near the chamber of Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa, may Allah be pleased with her. We also sat around him. He said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to command us to pray at the time of solar and lunar eclipses. Therefore, when you see either of them eclipsed, immediately turn towards prayer, because if it is the very thing you have been warned about (and you are praying), then you will not be in heedlessness, and if it is not that sign of the Hour, then still you have done a good deed and earned virtue.
Hadith 4388
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sit between the two rak'ahs as if he were sitting on a hot stone. I asked: Until standing up? He replied: Yes!

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The last person to enter Paradise will be the one who is the last to come out of Hell. He will be a man who will crawl out of Hell on his buttocks. It will be said to him, 'Go, enter Paradise.' When he enters Paradise, he will think that everyone has already reached their places and Paradise is full. He will return and say, 'O Lord! Paradise is full (where should I go?)' It will be said to him, 'Go, enter Paradise.' This will happen three times. Then Allah will say to him, 'Go, you are granted the world and ten times as much.' He will say, 'O Lord! Are You making fun of me while You are the King?' It is said that this person will be the lowest in rank among all the people of Paradise."

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that during the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to consider miracles as blessings, while you feel fear from them. In fact, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) had heard the news of the enemy being swallowed by the earth. He further says that once we were on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and water was not available. A vessel of water was presented to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his blessed hand in it and spread his fingers apart. Springs of water began to flow from the fingers of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying: "Come for ablution, this is a blessing from Allah." I filled my stomach with it and the people also drank from it. He further says that we used to hear the glorification of food while people were eating it.

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Abusing a Muslim is wickedness and fighting him is disbelief."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No woman should touch her naked body with another woman so that she describes her physical features to her husband in such a way as if he is seeing her with his own eyes. When you are three people, then two of you should not whisper to each other leaving the third one out, because this will cause the third one grief. And whoever seizes the wealth of a Muslim by swearing a false oath, he will meet Allah in such a state that Allah will be angry with him." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ash'ath (may Allah be pleased with him) said that this command was revealed regarding my incident, the details of which are that there was a well shared between me and a Jew, and we brought our case before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Once, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the house of Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). When the time for prayer came, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! Please step forward, for you are greater than us in knowledge and also older in age. He replied: No! You step forward, as we have come to your house and your mosque, therefore you have more right. Thus, Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward and took off his shoes. When the prayer ended and he finished with salam, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What was the need to take off the shoes? Were we in a sacred valley? I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) praying in leather socks and shoes.

Abdur Rahman bin Yazid says that once Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Hajj, Alqamah instructed me to stay with him, so I remained with him . . . . . Then he mentioned the complete hadith and said that when true dawn appeared, he (Ibn Mas'ud) said: "Say the Iqamah." I asked him, "Do you not usually pray Fajr at this time?" (Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud used to pray Fajr when it was quite bright), he replied: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also did not pray this prayer at this time, but I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on this day, at this place, praying this prayer at this very time. These are two prayers whose times have been changed: one is the Maghrib prayer, which is performed after the people arrive at Muzdalifah, and the other is the Fajr prayer, which is performed at the time of true dawn. And I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) doing it in this way."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent about eighty men of us—including Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, Sayyiduna Ja'far, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Afiṭah, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un, and Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with them)—to the Negus. When these people reached the Negus, the Quraysh also sent Amr bin As and Amarah bin Walid with gifts. They entered the court of the Negus, prostrated before him, and quickly stood on either side, saying: "Some people from among our tribe have fled to your land, and they have shown aversion to us and our religion." The Negus asked: "Where are those people?" They replied: "They are in your land; please summon them to you." So the Negus sent for them. Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his companions: "Today, I will be your spokesman." They all agreed. When they reached the Negus, they greeted him with peace but did not prostrate. The people said to them: "Why do you not prostrate before His Majesty the King?" They replied: "We do not prostrate before anyone except Allah, the Exalted." The Negus asked: "What do you mean?" They replied: "Allah, the Exalted, has sent a Prophet to us, and he has commanded us not to prostrate before anyone except Allah. He has also commanded us to give zakat and to pray." Amr bin As said to the Negus: "These people oppose you regarding Jesus (peace be upon him)." The Negus asked them: "What do you say about Jesus (peace be upon him) and his mother?" They replied: "We say what Allah says: that he is the Spirit of Allah and His Word, which He cast towards the virgin maiden whom no man had touched, nor had she any children." Upon this, the Negus picked up a straw from the ground and said: "O people of Abyssinia! Priests! Monks! By Allah, these people do not say anything more about Jesus (peace be upon him) than this straw. I welcome you and the one on whose behalf you have come. I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah, and in the Gospel we find mention of him, and he is the very Prophet whose glad tidings Jesus (peace be upon him) gave. You may stay wherever you wish. If it were not for matters of state, by Allah, I would go to him, carry his sandals, and serve him in ablution." Then he ordered that the gift of Amr bin As and Amarah be returned to them, which was returned. After that, Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) quickly returned from there and participated in the Battle of Badr, and he used to say that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) received news of the Negus's death, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sought forgiveness for him.

Abu Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I saw a man asking Aswad bin Yazid—who was teaching people the Qur'an in the mosque—"Do you recite this letter «فَهَلْ مِنْ مُدَّكِرٍ» with a 'dal' or with a 'dhal'?" He replied: "With a 'dal'. I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) say that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recite this word with a 'dal'."
Hadith 4402
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Before me, whenever Allah sent a prophet to any community, He also appointed disciples and companions for him from among his community who would act upon the prophet’s way and follow his command. But after them, there would come some unworthy people who would say things they themselves did not do, and would do things they were not commanded to do."
Hadith 4403
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed women who tattoo and get tattooed, women who add hair and have hair added, those who perform and have performed halalah, and those who consume and feed others with usury.
Hadith 4404
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in a cave when Surah Mursalat was revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and I memorized it as soon as it came from the mouth of the Prophet (peace be upon him). However, I do not remember which verse the Prophet (peace be upon him) ended with «﴿فَبِأَيِّ حَدِيثٍ بَعْدَهُ يُؤْمِنُونَ﴾» or «﴿وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ارْكَعُوا لَا يَرْكَعُونَ﴾».

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed a prostration of recitation at the end of Surah An-Najm, and all the Muslims also prostrated, except for one man from the Quraysh who took a handful of soil and brought it to his forehead and prostrated on it. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that later I saw him killed in a state of disbelief.
Hadith 4406
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that there are two statements, one of which I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the other I say from myself. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever dies in a state in which he associates partners with Allah, he will enter Hell," and I say that whoever dies in a state in which he does not associate anyone with Allah, he will enter Paradise.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you are three people, then two should not whisper to each other excluding the third, for that will cause him grief. We were granted permission. A man said, "I recite the Mufassalat (short surahs) in one night." Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Like poetry?" I also know such examples that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited two surahs in one rak'ah, of which eighteen surahs are from the Mufassalat and two surahs are from Al-Ham.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Which sin is the greatest?" Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I used to herd the goats of 'Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt. One day, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) while escaping from the polytheists, and he said: "O boy! Do you have any milk?" I replied: I am entrusted with them, so I cannot give you any. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there any goat among them that a male has not mounted?" I replied: Yes! And I brought such a goat to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over its udder and prayed, so milk descended into it. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a hollow stone from inside, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) milked it into that, drank himself, gave Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to drink, and I also drank. Then, addressing the udder, he said: "Shrink back," so the udder shrank back again. After a little while, I came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Teach me this matter as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over my head and prayed for me: "May Allah send His mercy upon you, you are an intelligent boy." I memorized seventy surahs from the blessed mouth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which no one can dispute with me about.
Hadith 4413
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If I were to take anyone as a close friend (khalil), I would have taken Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as my close friend, but he is my brother and companion, and your Prophet is the close friend (khalil) of Allah, the Exalted."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Uhud, the women were behind the Muslims and were tending to the wounded among the polytheists. If I swear by Allah, my oath will be true (and I will not be lying) that on that day, none of us desired the world, until Allah revealed this verse: «﴿مِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الدُّنْيَا وَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ﴾» [آل عمران : 152] “Some of you desire the world and some of you desire the Hereafter, then Allah turned you away from them so that He may test you.” When the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disobeyed the Prophet’s command and did not comply, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was left alone among only nine individuals, seven of whom were Ansar and two were from Quraysh, and the tenth was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself. When the polytheists attacked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: “May Allah have mercy on the one who repels them from us.” Upon hearing this, an Ansari advanced, fought for a while, and was martyred. In this way, one by one, all seven Ansari companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were martyred. Seeing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “We have not done justice to our companions.” Shortly after, Abu Sufyan came (who had not yet accepted Islam) and began to chant the slogan of victory for Hubal. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Respond to him: Allah is Most High and Most Great.” Abu Sufyan said: “We have ‘Uzza, and you have no ‘Uzza.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Respond to him: Allah is our Protector and you have no protector.” Then Abu Sufyan said: “Today is in retaliation for the day of Badr; a day for us and a day against us; a day we suffered and a day we rejoiced; Hanzalah for Hanzalah, so-and-so for so-and-so, and so-and-so for so-and-so.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There is still no equality between us and you; our slain are alive and provided for, while your slain are punished in the Fire of Hell.” Then Abu Sufyan said: “Some of the bodies have been mutilated; this was not the work of our leaders. I neither ordered it nor forbade it, I neither like it nor dislike it, I was neither pleased nor displeased by it.” When the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) saw, they found that the belly of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) had been ripped open, and Abu Sufyan’s wife Hind had taken out his liver and chewed it, but could not eat it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his body, he asked: “Did she eat any of it?” The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: “No.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah does not want any part of Hamza’s body to enter the Fire.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his body in front and offered his funeral prayer. Then the body of an Ansari was brought and placed beside Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered his funeral prayer as well. Then the Ansari’s body was taken away and Sayyiduna Hamza’s body was left there. Then another body was brought and placed beside Sayyiduna Amir Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered his funeral prayer for him as well. Then his body was taken away and Sayyiduna Hamza’s body was left there. In this way, on that day, the funeral prayer for Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) was offered seventy times.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once asked the companions (may Allah be pleased with them): "Do you know which charity is the most virtuous?" The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is the gift that one of you presents to his brother, whether it is money, the back of an animal (for riding), goat's milk, or cow's milk."
Hadith 4416
Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is extremely bad for any man among you to say, 'I forgot such and such verse,' rather he should say, 'Such and such verse was made to be forgotten by me.' Safeguard this Qur'an, for it escapes from people's hearts more swiftly than a camel escapes from its rope."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that in the beginning, during prayer, we used to talk and greet each other, and would inform one another as needed. One day I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. Various thoughts, both new and old, surrounded me. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he said, "Allah gives whatever new command He wishes. Thus, Allah has now revealed this new command that you should not talk during prayer."
Hadith 4418
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led five rak'ahs in the Zuhr prayer. The people asked, "Has there been an addition in the prayer?" So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed two prostrations of forgetfulness (sujood as-sahw).
Hadith 4419
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one is permitted to talk after the 'Isha prayer except for two persons: one who is praying or one who is traveling."

Huzail bin Shurahbil says that once a man came to Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him this issue: If a person’s heirs include a daughter, a granddaughter, and a real sister, how will the inheritance be distributed? He replied: Half of the total wealth will go to the daughter and the other half to the sister, and you should go to Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and ask him this issue as well; he will agree with and support us. So that man went to Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him the issue, also mentioning the answer of Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I also give this same verdict, then I will go astray and will not remain among the rightly guided. I will give the same decision that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave: “The daughter will get half of the total wealth, the granddaughter will get one-sixth so that two-thirds are completed, and whatever remains will go to the sister.” People went to Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud’s (may Allah be pleased with him) opinion, so he said: As long as such a great scholar is present among you, do not ask me questions.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was returning from Hudaybiyyah at night, and we camped on soft ground. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Who will keep watch over us? (Who will wake us up for Fajr?)" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) offered himself. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What if you also fall asleep?" He replied: "I will not sleep." By coincidence, he too fell asleep until the sun had risen and so-and-so companions woke up, among them was Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He woke everyone up, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also woke up and said: "Do as you used to do (perform the prayer as usual)." When the people had done so, he said: "If any of you sleeps or forgets, then do the same."
Meanwhile, the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) she-camel was lost. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had it searched for, and it was found by me in such a state that its rope was entangled in a tree. I brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he happily mounted it. When revelation would descend upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), its effect would be very intense upon him, and we would recognize that state by seeing it. On this occasion, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned to one side and covered his blessed head with a cloth, and the state of intensity came upon him, by which we recognized that revelation was descending upon him. After a short while, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us and informed us that Surah Al-Fath had been revealed to him.
