It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave wealth and property to some people, but did not give anything to one man among them. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! You gave to so-and-so and so-and-so, but you did not give anything to this person, even though he is a firm believer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Is he not a Muslim?” This question and answer happened three times. (Marfu‘ hadith) ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma‘mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Amir ibn Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas, from his father, who said: I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the Farewell Pilgrimage, and I became ill with an illness that brought me close to death. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, visited me, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth and no one will inherit from me except my daughter. Should I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth? He said: "No." I said: Half of my wealth? He said: "No." I said: Then a third of my wealth? He said: "A third, and a third is much. Indeed, O Sa‘d, to leave your heirs wealthy is better for you than to leave them poor, begging from people. Indeed, O Sa‘d, you will not spend anything seeking thereby the Face of Allah, the Exalted, except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you put in your wife's mouth." He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions? He said: "You will not be left behind and do a deed seeking thereby the Face of Allah except that you will be increased by it in degree and elevation. And perhaps you will be left behind so that Allah will benefit some people by you and harm others by you. O Allah, complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels, but the unfortunate one is Sa‘d ibn Khawlah." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, grieved for him, and he had died in Mecca.

Think carefully about what hadith you are narrating from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!” He said: “I bear witness that I am not lying about Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), and that Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) did not lie about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).”

Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once a son of Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me a hadith from his father. I went to Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him, “I have heard a hadith attributed to you, according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as the caliph over Madinah in his absence?” Upon hearing this, he became angry and said, “Who narrated this hadith to you?” I did not consider it appropriate to mention his son’s name. Then Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as his deputy over Madinah during the expedition of Tabuk and left him there, he (Ali) said: “O Messenger of Allah! My desire is that wherever you go, I should be with you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Are you not pleased that your relation to me is like that of Harun (Aaron) to Musa (Moses), except that there is no prophethood after me?”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I never heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say about any living person that "he is a person of Paradise walking on the earth," except for Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) and other noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) that in the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), there were two brothers, one of whom was superior to the other. The superior one passed away first, and the other brother lived for forty more days after him, then he too died. When their mention was brought before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), people spoke of the first one being superior. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Did the second brother not perform prayers?” The people said: “Of course he did, but that does not make any difference.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you know how far his prayers have taken him?” Then he said: “The example of prayer is like that of a flowing river whose water is sweet and pure, and it flows at your doorstep, and you bathe in it five times a day. What do you think, would there remain any dirt on his body?”

Habib bin Abi Thabit says that once I had come to Madinah Munawwarah, and I received news from behind that a plague had broken out in Kufa. I asked people, "Who narrates the hadith on this subject here?" People mentioned the name of Amir bin Sa’d, but he was not present there at that time. Then I met Ibrahim bin Sa’d, and he narrated to me, on the authority of Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with them both), the narration of Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a plague spreads among a people, do not go there, and if you are already present in an area and a plague breaks out there, then do not leave from there." I asked Ibrahim, "Did you hear this narration directly from Sayyiduna Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him)?" He replied in the affirmative.

Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) once submitted in the court of the Messenger: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Allah has saved me from the polytheists today, so please give me this sword. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “This sword is neither yours nor mine, so put it down here.” So I put the sword down and went back, and I began to think in my heart that perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would give this sword to someone who had not faced a trial like mine. Meanwhile, I heard the voice of a man calling me from behind. I thought perhaps some command had been revealed about me? When I arrived there, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You had asked me for this sword. Indeed, this sword was not mine, but now it has been given to me as a gift, so I give it to you.” After this, this verse was revealed: «﴿يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَنْفَالِ قُلِ الْأَنْفَالُ لِلّٰهِ وَالرَّسُولِ﴾ [الأنفال : 1]» O Beloved (peace and blessings be upon him)! “They ask you about the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war belong to Allah and His Messenger.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, people from the tribe of Juhainah came to him and said, “You have come and settled among us, so please write us a document so that when we come to you, we may have assurance with you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had a document written for them. Later, those people became Muslims. Some time later, in the month of Rajab, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent us out; our number was not even a hundred, and he ordered us to attack a tribe of Banu Kinanah that was settled beside the tribe of Juhainah. We launched a night raid on them, but their numbers were very large, so we took refuge among the tribe of Juhainah, but they refused to give us shelter and said, “Why are you fighting in the sacred months?” We replied, “We are fighting those who expelled us from the sacred land to the sacred city, thus violating its sanctity.” Then we began to consult among ourselves about what should be done. Some people said, “Let us go to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and inform him of the whole situation.” Others said, “No, we will stay here.” My opinion, along with a few others, was that we should go towards the caravan of Quraysh and attack them. So the people set out towards the caravan. At that time, the rule regarding spoils of war was that whatever came into someone’s hands belonged to him. Some of us went and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about this as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up in anger, and the color of his blessed face turned red, and he said, “You all left from me together, and now you are returning separately. It was this very division that destroyed those before you. I will appoint over you a man as your leader who, although he is not better than you, is stronger than you in enduring hunger and thirst.” Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Jahsh Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) as the leader, who was the first leader in Islam.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greatest sin among the Muslims is of the person who asked about something which was not forbidden, but as a result of his question, the ruling of its prohibition was revealed."

(Marfu‘ hadith) Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Amir ibn Sa‘d, from his father, who said: I fell seriously ill in Mecca in the year of the Conquest, to the point of approaching death. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth, and none inherits from me except my daughter. Should I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity? Sufyan once said: Should I give all my wealth in charity? He said: "No." He said: Then should I give two-thirds of my wealth? He said: "No." I said: Then half? He said: "No." He said: I said: A third? He said: "A third, and a third is much. Indeed, if you leave your heirs wealthy, it is better than leaving them poor, begging from people. You will not spend anything in charity except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you lift to your wife's mouth." I said: O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my migration? He said: "You will not be left behind after me and do any deed seeking the Face of Allah except that you will increase thereby in rank and degree. And perhaps you will be left behind so that some people will benefit from you and others will be harmed by you. O Allah, complete the migration for my companions and do not turn them back on their heels, but the unfortunate one is Sa‘d ibn Khawlah," grieving for him that he died in Mecca.
