The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “No.” He said: Should I bequeath half of my wealth? He said: “No.” He said: Should I bequeath one third of my wealth? He said: “Yes! It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he became ill in Makkah Mukarramah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to visit him. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Can I bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? He said, “No.” I asked about half, and he still forbade it. Then when I asked about a third of my wealth, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Yes! You may bequeath a third, and a third is still a lot. Remember! If you leave your family in a good state, it is much better than leaving them in such a condition that they are forced to beg from people. Whatever you spend on yourself is charity, whatever you spend on your family is charity, and whatever you spend on your wife is also charity.” The narrator also says that at that time Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) had only one daughter. Then Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned migration, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “May Allah have mercy on Ibn Afra. It may be that Allah will raise you to such a high status that a people will benefit from you and others will be harmed.”
Hadith 1483

Once, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) heard one of his sons making this supplication: “O Allah! I ask You for Paradise, its blessings, its silk garments, and such-and-such things, and I seek refuge with You from the Fire of Hell, its chains, and its shackles.” So he said to him, “You have asked Allah for great good and sought refuge with Him from great evil. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘A people will soon come who will exceed the limits in supplication.’” And he recited this verse: “«﴿ادْعُوا رَبَّكُمْ تَضَرُّعًا وَخُفْيَةً إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ﴾ [الأعراف : 55]» ‘Call upon your Lord with humility and in secret. Surely, He does not like those who exceed the limits.’” It is sufficient for you to say: «اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ النَّارِ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ» “O Allah! I ask You for Paradise and for every word and deed that brings one closer to it, and I seek refuge with You from Hell and from every word and deed that brings one closer to it.”
Hadith 1484
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to the right side to say salam, his right cheek would be visible with its brightness, and when he turned to the left side to say salam, the whiteness of his left cheek would be seen.

Hadith 1487
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I am amazed at the decree and decision of Allah regarding the believing servant: if any good comes to him, he gives thanks to his Lord, and if any calamity befalls him, he says «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ» and is patient (and both patience and gratitude are beloved to Allah). The believer is rewarded for everything, even for the morsel that he lifts and puts into his wife’s mouth.”

He did not like the idea of dying in the land from which he had migrated. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said twice: “May Allah’s mercy descend upon Sa’d bin ‘Afra.” And he had only one daughter. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Can I bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? He replied: “No.” He asked about half, but he was also forbidden. And whatever you spend, you will be rewarded for it as charity, even for the morsel that you lift and put into your wife’s mouth. And it may be that Allah will grant you a long life, and through you many people will benefit and many people (disbelievers) will be harmed.”
Hadith 1489
Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) stated in his final will that my grave should be made in the lahd (niche) style, and raw bricks should be placed over it just as was done with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I said to Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that I want to ask you about a hadith, but I feel afraid to ask you. He replied: Nephew! Do not do that. When you know that I have knowledge of something, then ask me freely and do not be afraid. I asked: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah Munawwarah as his deputy on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk, what did he say to him? Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as his deputy in Madinah Munawwarah on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk and left him there, he (Ali) said: O Messenger of Allah! Will you leave me among children and women? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Are you not pleased that your relation to me is the same as that of Harun (peace be upon him) to Musa (peace be upon him) — except for Prophethood?” He (Ali) said: Why not, O Messenger of Allah! Upon this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) quickly returned, and even today I feel the dust rising from his footsteps before my eyes.

Abu Uthman says that I heard from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) — who was the first to shoot an arrow in the way of Allah — and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) — who climbed the fortification of Ta’if — both, that we heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Whoever claims someone as his father other than his (real) father, knowing that he is not his father, Paradise is forbidden for him.”

Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I found myself to be the seventh among seven men with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (who had accepted Islam). At that time, we had nothing to eat except the branches and leaves of grapevines, and each one of us would pass stool like a goat passes stool, with nothing else mixed in it. And today, the people of Banu Asad reproach me for my Islam. If that is so, then I have suffered a great loss and all my efforts have been wasted.
Hadith 1499
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever attributes himself to someone other than his father, knowing that he is not his father, Paradise is forbidden for him."
Hadith 1500
Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once during the days of Mina, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me to announce: “The days of Tashreeq are days of eating and drinking, so there is no fasting in them.”

Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that regarding me, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fixed the amount of one third in the matter of bequest. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me when I was ill. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, “Have you made a bequest?” I said, “Yes! I have made a bequest of all my wealth in the name of the poor, needy, and travelers.” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not do that.” I said, “My heirs are wealthy, nevertheless, shall I make a bequest of two-thirds?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No.” I mentioned half, he said, “No.” I mentioned one third, he said, “Yes! One third is permissible, and even that is much.”
Hadith 1502
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There is no reality in the skull of the deceased coming out of his grave after death, in diseases being contagious, or in bad omens. If there were any ill omen in anything, it would be in a woman, a horse, and a house.”
Hadith 1503
Muhammad bin Abdullah says that in the year when Sayyiduna Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) went for Hajj, he heard Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Dahhak bin Qays mentioning Hajj Tamattu’. Dahhak said, “Only a person who is ignorant and unaware of Allah’s command can perform Hajj Tamattu’.” Upon this, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Nephew! You have said a very bad thing.” Dahhak said, “Did not Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) prohibit it?” He replied, “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also performed Hajj in such a way that he combined Hajj and Umrah in a single journey, and we also did the same with him.”

Saeed bin Musayyib, may Allah have mercy on him, says that once I said to Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, that I want to ask you about a hadith, but I am afraid to ask you because there is some sharpness in your temperament. He said: Which hadith? I asked: When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, left Sayyiduna Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, in Madinah as his deputy on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk, what did he say to him? Sayyiduna Sa’d, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Are you not pleased that your relation to me is the same as that of Harun, peace be upon him, to Musa, peace be upon him, except that there is no prophethood after me?” He said: I am pleased. Then he said twice: Why not.
Hadith 1510
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that once Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that people have complaints against you regarding everything, even in the matter of prayer. He replied, “I make the first two rak’ahs relatively long and the last two rak’ahs short, and I do not fall short in following the prayers I observed behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “That is what I expected from you.”
Hadith 1511
Abdullah bin Raqeem says that during the time of the Battle of Jamal, we reached Madinah Munawwarah, where we met Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him). If the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had permitted him in this matter, then we too would have at least castrated ourselves.
Hadith 1515
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that once someone asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Is it permissible to sell fresh dates in exchange for dry dates?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is it not the case that fresh dates become less after they dry?" The people replied: "Yes, it is so." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarded it as undesirable.

On the way, we passed by the mosque of Banu Mu’awiyah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered this mosque and offered two rak’ahs of prayer. We also performed this prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made a long supplication, and after finishing, he said: “I asked my Lord for three things. One request I made was that my Ummah not be destroyed by drowning in the sea; Allah accepted this request of mine. The second request I made was that my Ummah not be destroyed by famine; Allah also accepted this request of mine. And the third request I made was that my Ummah not fight among themselves, but Allah did not grant this supplication.”

Umar bin Sa’d says that once I needed something from my father, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him). Before stating his purpose, he gave a long and elaborate introduction, as is the habit of people. When he finished, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Son! Have you finished your talk? I replied: Yes! He said: You are not very far from your need (I will fulfill your need), but ever since I heard this from you, I have lost interest in you. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “Soon there will come a people who will eat by the power of their tongues (eloquence), just as a cow eats from the earth with its tongue.”
