Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that once I asked Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him): What compelled you people to combine Surah Anfal, which is from the Mathani, with Surah Bara’ah, which is from the Mi’in, and not write even a line of “Bismillah” between them, and you counted both among the “Seven Long Surahs”? Why did you do this? Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: When revelation was being sent down to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), sometimes several surahs would be revealed together, and it was the habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when any revelation was sent down, he would call one of his scribes and have it written, and would say: Place this in such-and-such surah at such-and-such place. Sometimes several verses would be revealed, and on that occasion, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would indicate that these verses should be placed in this surah, and sometimes only a single verse would be revealed, but even then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would specify its place. Surah Anfal was revealed in the early period of Madinah, while Surah Bara’ah, in terms of revelation, is among the last parts of the Noble Qur’an, and the events and rulings of both are extremely similar to each other. Meanwhile, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world and could not clarify to us whether it is a part of it or not. I assumed that Surah Bara’ah is a part of Surah Anfal, so I combined both and did not write the line of “Bismillah” between them, and counted them among the “Seven Long Surahs.”

Humran reports that once Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sat on a stone platform and performed ablution. After that, he said: I am narrating to you a hadith which I heard directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If there were not a verse in the Book of Allah (which contains condemnation for concealing knowledge), I would never have narrated this hadith to you: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever performs ablution and does it well, then enters the mosque and offers prayer, all his sins will be forgiven until he offers the next prayer."

Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that once Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with the intention of Hajj. After traveling some distance, someone went to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) has prohibited Hajj Tamattu'. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his companions: "When he departs, you also set out." Thus, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions donned the Ihram for Umrah. When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) found out, he did not say anything to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this matter. Rather, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) himself asked him, "I have heard that you prohibit Hajj Tamattu'?" He replied, "Yes!" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Did you not hear about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing Hajj Tamattu'?" He replied, "Why not."

He (Uthman) said, "Then choose between your land and your money (if you want to take your land back, then take it, and if you want to take the money, then take it), because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allah Almighty will surely admit to Paradise the person who is gentle, whether he is a buyer or a seller, a payer or a demander.'"

Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "What remains with you regarding women?"

Humran says that once Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) called for water to perform ablution. He rinsed his mouth, put water in his nose, washed his face three times, washed both arms three times, wiped his head, and also wiped over the upper part of his feet, and then he laughed. Then he asked his companions, "Why do you not ask me the reason for my laughter?" The people said, "O Commander of the Faithful! You tell us why you laughed." He said, "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) call for water in the same way, sit near this place, and perform ablution in the same manner as I did. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also laughed and asked his companions, 'Why do you not ask me the reason for my laughter?' The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, 'O Messenger of Allah! What made you laugh?' He said, 'When a person calls for water to perform ablution and washes his face, Allah forgives all the sins committed by his face. When he washes his arms, the same happens. When he wipes his head, the same happens. And when he cleans his feet, the same happens.'"

Rabah says that my master married me to his Roman slave girl. I went to her, and a dark-skinned boy like me was born to her. I named him Abdullah. When the opportunity arose again, another dark-skinned boy was born, and I named him Ubaidullah. Coincidentally, my wife became the object of affection for my master's Roman slave, whose name was "Yuhannas." He won her over in his own language, so this time the child that was born resembled the complexion of the Romans. I asked my wife, "What is this?" She said, "This is Yuhannas's child." We presented this matter before Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him. He said, « کہ کیا تم اس» "Are you content that I judge between you with the same decision that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave?" The decision of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that the child belongs to the owner of the bed, and for the adulterer there are stones.

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman says that during the days when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged, once he looked out from the upper chamber of his house and said: I ask those who were present in the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him), by Allah, regarding the "Day of Hira", when Mount Hira began to shake and the Prophet (peace be upon him) struck it with his blessed foot and said: "O Mount Hira! Be still, for there is none upon you except a Prophet, a Siddiq, and two martyrs." Was I present on that occasion? Many people affirmed this for him. Then he said: I ask those who were present in the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him), by Allah, regarding the "Pledge of Ridwan", when the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent me to the polytheists of Makkah and, considering his own hand as my hand, took the pledge to avenge my blood on my behalf? Many people again affirmed this for him. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask those who were present in the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him), by Allah, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Who will expand this mosque of ours in exchange for a house in Paradise?" Did I not buy land with my wealth and expand this mosque? People affirmed this for him as well. Then he said: I ask the companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them), by Allah, regarding the "Army of Difficulty" (which is another name for the Battle of Tabuk), when the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Who will spend today? What he gives will be accepted." Did I not provide equipment for half the army with my wealth? People affirmed this for him as well. Then he said: I ask the companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them), by Allah, regarding the "Well of Rumah", whose water was sold even to travelers, did I not buy it with my wealth and dedicate it for travelers as well? Is this not so? People affirmed this for him as well.

Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that once Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) set out with the intention of Hajj. When he had covered some part of the journey, someone went to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) has prohibited Hajj Tamattu'. Rather, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) himself asked him, "I have heard that you prohibit Hajj Tamattu'?" He replied, "Yes!" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) not perform Hajj Tamattu'?" The narrator says: I do not know what reply Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him.

Malik bin Aws bin Hadthan says that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for me, and while we were sitting, Sayyiduna Umar’s slave, whose name was “Yarfa,” came in and said, “Sayyiduna Uthman, Abdur Rahman, Sa’d, and Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with them) are seeking permission to enter?” He said, “Let them in.” After a short while, the slave came again and said, “Sayyiduna Abbas and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) are seeking permission to enter?” He said, “Let them in as well.” As soon as Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) entered, he said, “O Commander of the Faithful! Decide between me and him.” At that time, their dispute was about the property of Fay’ obtained from Banu Nadir. The people also said, “O Commander of the Faithful! Decide between them and grant each relief from the other, for their dispute is only increasing.” Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I ask you by Allah, by whose command the heavens and the earth are established, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Inheritance is not established in our property; whatever we leave behind is all charity?’” The people replied in the affirmative. Then he asked the same question to Sayyiduna Abbas and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them), and they also affirmed it. After that, he said, “I will inform you of the reality of this. Allah gave this property of Fay’ exclusively to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); no one else was given anything from it, and He said: «وما افاء الله على رسول منهم فما او جفتم عليه من خيل ولا ركا ب» Therefore, this property was specific to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but by Allah! He did not keep it for himself to the exclusion of you, nor did he prefer himself over you with this property. He distributed this property among you until only a little remained, from which he would provide for his family for a year, and if anything was left over from that, he would distribute it in the way of Allah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said that after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I am responsible and caretaker of his property, and I will follow the same method as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to follow regarding it.”

It is narrated from Humran, who was the freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), that I saw Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution: he poured water over his hands three times, put water into his nose three times, rinsed his mouth three times, and mentioned the complete hadith which has already been mentioned earlier.

Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) once said to those present with him, "Shall I not show you how the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed ablution?" The people said, "Why not!" So he called for water, rinsed his mouth three times, put water into his nose three times, washed his face three times, washed both his arms three times each, wiped his head, and washed his feet. Then he said, "Know that the ears are part of the head." Then he said, "I have demonstrated ablution before you exactly as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed it, with great care."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) that during the days when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged in his house, we were with him. For a short while, he entered a room, and those sitting on the bench could also hear what he was saying. In the same way, once he entered that room, and after a short while, he came out and said, "These people have just now threatened to kill me." We said, "O Leader of the Believers! May Allah suffice you and protect you from them." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "For what crime would these people kill me? When I have heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that it is not lawful to shed the blood of a Muslim except in one of three cases: a man who becomes an apostate after accepting Islam, or a married person who commits adultery, or a murderer who is killed in retaliation for the one he killed. By Allah! Since Allah has guided me, I have never preferred any other religion over this religion. As for Islam, let alone that, even in the days of ignorance I never committed adultery, nor have I killed anyone. Then why do these people want to kill me?"
