Salim bin Abi Al-Ja'd (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) called some of the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), among whom was Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "I want to ask you some questions and have you confirm a few things. I ask you by Allah, do you not know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give preference to the Quraysh over other people, and to Banu Hashim over all of Quraysh?" The people remained silent. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If the keys to Paradise were in my hand, I would give them to Banu Umayyah so that all of them could enter Paradise." (Having kinship ties is a natural thing; this was actually an answer to the question people used to raise against Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding favoritism towards relatives.) After this, he addressed Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Shall I tell you something about him, i.e., Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him)? I was once walking, holding the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until we reached the valley of Batha, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to his parents, where they were being subjected to various punishments. Ammar's father, upon seeing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Will we always remain like this?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Be patient,' then he supplicated: 'O Allah! Forgive the family of Yasir.' I too am now being patient."
Hadith 440
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person has no right to anything except the shade of a house, pieces of dry bread, clothing sufficient to cover the private parts, and water."
Hadith 441

Once, a man saw Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting near the second gate of the mosque. He ordered the meat of the shoulder and began to eat the meat off the bone. Then, standing just like that, he performed the prayer without renewing his ablution, and said: I sat as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat, I ate what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate, and I did what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did.

Once during the days of Hajj, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said in the plain of Mina: O people! I will narrate to you a hadith which I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Guarding for one day in the way of Allah is better than a thousand days in ordinary circumstances. Therefore, whoever wishes, let him take part in it as he wills. After saying this, he said: Have I conveyed the message? The people said: Yes! He said: O Allah, bear witness.
Hadith 443
Once during the days of Hajj, Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in Mina in four complete rak'ahs instead of shortening the prayer. The people were astonished at this. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people! I have become a resident after coming to Makkah Mukarramah, and I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whoever becomes a resident in a city will pray the prayer of a resident."

Saeed bin Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I heard Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) delivering a sermon on the pulpit, saying: I used to buy dates from a Jewish family and tribe called Banu Qaynuqa, and after keeping my profit, I would sell them further. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know of this, he said: "Uthman! When you buy, weigh it, and when you sell, sell it by weighing."
Hadith 445
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain of transmission.
Hadith 446
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever recites this supplication, nothing will be able to harm him «بسم الله الذى لا يضر مع اسمه شيء فى الارض ولا فى السماء وهو السميع العليم» .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say once: "I know a word that if any servant says it, believing in it with his heart as truth, the fire of Hell will become forbidden for him." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Shall I tell you what that word is?" That word is sincerity, which Allah made obligatory upon His Prophet and his companions (may Allah be pleased with them). This is the same word of piety that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeatedly presented before his uncle Abu Talib at the time of his death, that is, the testimony of the oneness of Allah.
Hadith 448
Sayyiduna Zaid bin Khalid al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) once asked Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that if a man has intercourse with his wife but does not ejaculate, what is the ruling? He replied that he should perform ablution as he does for prayer, and wash his private part, and said that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say this. The narrator says that then I asked the same question to Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Zubair, Sayyiduna Talha, and Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with them), and they also gave the same answer.
Hadith 449
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the meaning of the Quranic verse «نرفع درجات من نشاء» is that through knowledge, We raise the ranks of whomever We wish. I asked, "Who explained this meaning to you?" He replied, "Zaid bin Aslam did."
Hadith 450
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I was performing prayer, and I could not tell whether I had prayed an even or odd number of rak‘ahs." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Protect yourself from letting Satan play with you during prayer. If any of you is praying and cannot tell whether it was an even or odd number, then he should perform two prostrations of forgetfulness (sujood as-sahw), for with these two, the prayer is completed."
Hadith 451
Maseerah bin Ma’bad says that once Yazid bin Abi Kabshah led us in the Asr prayer. After the prayer, he turned to us and sat down, and said: I prayed with Marwan bin Hakam, and he also performed two prostrations in the same way and turned to us and informed us that he had prayed with Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he narrated this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that during the days when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was besieged in his house, he looked out at the people and said: "For what crime do you intend to kill me? For I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that it is not lawful to shed the blood of a Muslim except in one of three cases: a man who becomes an apostate after accepting Islam, or a married person who commits adultery, or a murderer who is killed in retaliation for the one he killed. By Allah! Since Allah has guided me, I have never become an apostate. As for adultery, not only in Islam, even in the days of ignorance I never committed it, nor have I killed anyone for whom retribution should be taken from me."

It is narrated from Malik bin Abdullah, may Allah have mercy on him, that once Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari, may Allah be pleased with him, came to Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, seeking permission to enter. He granted him permission. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, had a staff in his hand. Sayyiduna Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, asked Sayyiduna Ka'b, may Allah be pleased with him: O Ka'b! Abdur Rahman has passed away and left wealth in his inheritance. What is your opinion regarding this matter? He said: If he used to fulfill the rights of Allah through it, then there is no harm. Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari, may Allah be pleased with him, began to strike him with his staff and said: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: If I had gold equal to this mountain, I would not like to leave behind even six uqiyah of it; I would spend it so that it would be accepted. O Uthman! I ask you by Allah, did you also hear this statement? He replied: Yes.

Hani, who was the freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), says that when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) would stop at a grave, he would weep so much that his beard would become wet. Someone asked him, "When you mention Paradise and Hell, you do not weep, but at this you weep?" He replied that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter; if one is saved there, then the subsequent stages will be easier, and if one is not saved there, then the subsequent stages will be more difficult." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Of all the scenes I have seen, the scene of the grave is the most terrifying."

It is narrated from Marwan that during the "Year of Nosebleed," blood once flowed profusely from the nose of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) (which is called a nosebleed), to the extent that he could not even go for Hajj and, having lost hope of life, he made his will. During this time, a man from the Quraysh came to him and said, "Appoint someone as your successor (caliph)." He asked, "Is this also the opinion of the people?" He replied, "Yes!" He asked, "Whose opinion is this among the people?" At this, he remained silent. After that, another man came and repeated the words of the first man, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him the same answers. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Whom do the people want to appoint as caliph?" He said, "Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him)." He said, "Yes! By the One in Whose hand is my soul, to my knowledge, he was the best and the most beloved in the sight of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Hadith 459
Humran reports that once I came to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), he was sitting on a bench, he performed ablution excellently and said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution in this very place in the best manner, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever performs ablution like this of mine and comes to the mosque and offers two units of prayer, Allah Almighty will forgive all his previous sins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: Do not be deceived.

Ubaidullah bin Umair says that I was sitting with Sulaiman bin Ali, when an elder from the Quraysh arrived. Sulaiman said: Look! Seat the Sheikh in a good place because it is the right of the Quraysh. I said: Governor! Shall I narrate to you a hadith that whoever insults the Quraysh, it is as if he insults Allah? He said: Subhan Allah! How excellent, who narrated this to you? I said: Rabee’ah bin Abi Abdur Rahman narrated it to me from Sa’eed bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him), who narrated from Amr bin Uthman, that my father said to me: Son! If you are ever given leadership over any place, honor the Quraysh, because I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever insults the Quraysh, it is as if he insults Allah.

Ibn Abzi says that when the siege of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) began, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "I have the best kind of camels which I have prepared for you. You can ride them and go to Makkah Mukarramah. Whoever wants to come to you, will come there." But he refused, saying, "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that in Makkah Mukarramah, a ram from the Quraysh will spread heresy, whose name will be Abdullah. Hadith 462

Rabah says that my master married me to his Roman slave girl. I went to her, and a dark-skinned boy like me was born to her. I named him Abdullah. When the opportunity arose again, another dark-skinned boy was born, and I named him Ubaidullah. Coincidentally, my wife became the object of affection for my master's Roman slave, whose name was Yohannes. He won her over in his own language. So this time, the child that was born resembled the complexion of the Romans. I asked my wife, "What is this?" She said, "This is Yohannes' child." We presented this matter before Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). He said, "Are you content that I judge between you as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) judged?" The decision of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is that the child belongs to the owner of the bed, and for the adulterer there are stones (i.e., punishment). Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) established the lineage of the child with me and flogged both of them, and after that, another son was born to me from her who was dark-skinned.

For a short while, when we would enter a room, we could also hear the conversation of those sitting on the watch-post. In this way, once he entered that room, and after a short while, he came out, his color had changed, and he said, "These people have just now threatened to kill me." We said, "O Leader of the Believers! May Allah suffice you and protect you from them." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "For what crime would these people kill me, when I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that it is not lawful to shed the blood of a Muslim except in one of three cases: a man who becomes an apostate after accepting Islam, or a married person who commits adultery, or a murderer who is killed in retaliation for the one he killed. By Allah! Since Allah has guided me, I have never preferred any religion over this religion. As for Islam, that is a distant matter; even in the days of ignorance, I never committed adultery, nor did I kill anyone. Then why do these people want to kill me?"
Hadith 469
Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: If I do not narrate many ahadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to you, it is not because I could not remember them, but rather I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Whoever attributes to me something that I did not say, let him take his place in the Hellfire.
