It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was delivering the Friday sermon. During the sermon, a man came. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "What is this time to come?" He replied, "O Commander of the Faithful! I had just returned from the market. As soon as I heard the call to prayer, I performed ablution and came." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "And ablution only? While you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered to perform ghusl (full ritual bath) for Friday."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Khaybar, some companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were seen coming from the front, saying, "So-and-so is a martyr, so-and-so is a martyr," until they passed by a man about whom they also said, "He too is a martyr." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Never! I have seen him in Hell because he stole a cloak from the spoils of war." After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Khattab! Go and announce among the people that only the believers will enter Paradise." So I went out and began to announce that only the believers will enter Paradise.

Abu Al-Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once I set out towards Madinah Munawwarah. When I arrived there, I found out that a disease had spread there due to which people were dying in large numbers. I was sitting in the gathering of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when a funeral passed by. The people praised the deceased, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It has become obligatory." Then a second funeral passed by, and the people praised that deceased as well. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) again said: "It has become obligatory." A third funeral passed by, and the people spoke ill of that deceased. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) again said: "It has become obligatory." Eventually, I asked: "O Leader of the Believers! What has become obligatory?" He replied: "I only said what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, that if four people testify to the goodness of a Muslim, Paradise becomes obligatory for him." We asked: "What if there are three people?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The same ruling applies." We asked about two people, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if there are two, the same ruling applies." Then we ourselves did not ask about one person.
Hadith 205
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you put your trust in Allah as He deserves to be trusted, you would be provided for as the birds are provided for: they go out in the morning with empty stomachs and return in the evening with full stomachs."
Hadith 206
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not sit with those who deny predestination, and do not initiate conversation with them."
Hadith 207
Ibn Samt says that he once set out towards Dhul-Hulaifah with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) performed two rak'ahs there. I asked him about this, and he replied, "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) doing the same."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reviewed his companions and they were a little over three hundred, and when he reviewed the polytheists, they appeared to be more than a thousand. Seeing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards the Qiblah and raised his hands in supplication. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a cloak. While supplicating, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Where is Your promise? O Allah, fulfill Your promise. O Allah, if this small group of Muslims is destroyed today, then never again will You be worshipped on the earth." In this way, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to implore his Lord persistently, until his blessed cloak fell off. Seeing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward, picked up the Prophet’s cloak and placed it on him, and embraced the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from behind, saying: "O Messenger of Allah! You have supplicated much to your Lord, He will surely fulfill His promise." Thereupon, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: "Remember when you were calling upon your Lord for help, and He responded to you, 'I will help you with a thousand angels coming in succession.'" When the battle of Badr commenced and the two armies met, by the grace of Allah, the polytheists were defeated. Seventy of them were killed and seventy were captured and taken as prisoners. Regarding these prisoners, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Ali, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) advised: "O Messenger of Allah! These people are our brothers and relatives. My opinion is that you take ransom from them; the wealth will strengthen us against the disbelievers, and it is possible that Allah may guide them, so they will become our supporters." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Ibn Khattab, what is your opinion?" I said: "My opinion is not the same as Abu Bakr’s. My opinion is that you hand over so-and-so, who is a close relative of Umar, to me, and I will strike off his neck with my own hand. You hand over Aqil to Ali, and he will strike off his neck. Grant Hamza dominance over so-and-so, and he will kill him with his own hand, so that Allah may know that there is no leniency in our hearts for the polytheists. These people are the chiefs, leaders, and ringleaders of the polytheists. When they are killed, disbelief and polytheism will die their own death." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) preferred the opinion of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and left mine, and took ransom from them. The next day, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw that he and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) were sitting and weeping. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the matter that you and your companion (Abu Bakr) are weeping? Please tell me, so that if I can weep, I may join you, and if not, I will at least try to weep." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The punishment that was shown to me as a result of your companions advising me to take ransom was so close that it appeared as near as this tree, and Allah has revealed this verse: 'It is not for a Prophet to have prisoners...' till the end of the verse. Later, the spoils of war were made lawful for them. The following year, when the Battle of Uhud took place, seventy Muslims were martyred as a consequence of taking ransom at Badr, and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) dispersed, leaving the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The blessed tooth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was martyred, the links of his helmet pierced into his blessed head, his blessed face was filled with blood, and this Qur’anic verse was revealed: 'When a calamity befell you, although you had inflicted twice as much (on the enemy), you said: How did this happen?' Say: 'It is from yourselves.' Surely Allah is Able to do all things." The meaning is that this defeat was due to taking ransom.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were on a journey with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about something three times, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not answer me even once. I said to myself: "O son of Khattab! May your mother weep for you. You asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about something three times, but he did not give you any answer." Thinking this, I mounted my ride and left from there, fearing that perhaps a verse of the Qur'an might be revealed about me. After a short while, a caller came calling my name, "Where is Umar?" I returned, thinking that perhaps a verse of the Qur'an had been revealed about me. When I arrived, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Tonight a surah has been revealed to me which is more beloved to me than the world and whatever is in it." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited the first verse of Surah Al-Fath.

Once food was presented to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he invited a man to join him. The man said, "I am fasting." Umar asked, "Which fast are you observing?" He said, "If there was no fear of error, I would narrate to you the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a Bedouin brought a rabbit to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said, "Go and call Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him)." When Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, "Were you present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day when a Bedouin brought a rabbit?" He replied, "Yes! I saw blood on it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Eat it." The man said, "I am fasting." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What kind of fast?" He said, "I fast at the beginning and end of every month." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If you want to fast, then for voluntary fasts, choose the 13th, 14th, and 15th days of the month."

If the crowd becomes too large (instead of blaming the lack of space in the mosque), perform prostration on your brother’s back. Similarly, once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw some people praying on the road and said: Perform prayer in the mosque.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: I had a great desire to ask Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about those two pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding whom Allah Almighty said: "If you both repent, it will be better for you, for your hearts have deviated." But I did not have the courage, until once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Hajj, and I was with him. On the way, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) started walking away from the people, so I followed him with a water vessel. He relieved himself, and when he returned, I poured water on his hands and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to perform ablution. During this time, I found the opportunity appropriate, so I asked: O Commander of the Faithful! Who were those two women among the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about whom Allah said: "If you both repent, it will be better for you"? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Ibn Abbas! It is surprising that you do not know this. They were Aisha and Hafsa. And he said: We, the people of Quraysh, used to have dominance over our women, but when we came to Madinah, we found that the women here had dominance over their men. Seeing them, our women also started learning these ways from them. At that time, my house was in Awali near Banu Umayyah bin Zaid. One day, for some reason, I expressed anger at my wife, and she replied back to me. I was greatly surprised. She said: You are surprised at my replying to you? By Allah! The pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also reply to him, and sometimes one of them does not speak to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the entire day. Hearing this, I went straight to my daughter Hafsa and asked her: Do you argue with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? She admitted it. Then I asked: Does any one of you not speak to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for the whole day? She admitted this too. I said: Whoever among you does this is in great loss and ruin. Are you satisfied that, seeing your Prophet angry, Allah's wrath may descend upon one of you and she may perish? Beware! From now on, do not argue with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about anything, nor ask him for anything. Whatever you need, tell me. And do not be deceived by thinking that your friend Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) is more beloved and dear to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
I had an Ansari neighbor. We had set turns; one day he would go to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and one day I would. He would inform me of the news and revelation of his day, and I would inform him of mine. In those days, we used to talk among ourselves that the people of Banu Ghassan were preparing their horses to confront us. In this context, one night my neighbor came to my house at Isha and knocked loudly at the door, then started calling out to me. When I came out, he said: Today a very important event has occurred. I asked: Have Banu Ghassan attacked? He said: No! An even more important event has occurred: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has divorced his wives. Hearing this, I said: Hafsa is ruined! I knew this would happen. Anyway, after offering the Fajr prayer, I put on my clothes and went straight to Hafsa. She was crying. I asked her: Has the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) divorced you? She said: I do not know. He is staying alone in that upper room. I went there and found a black slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: Seek permission for me to enter. He went and after a while returned, saying: I mentioned you to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he remained silent. I went and sat near the pulpit and found many people sitting there, weeping. I sat there for a while, but then restlessness overcame me, so I went again to the slave and said: Seek permission for me. He went and soon returned, saying: I mentioned you to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he remained silent. After this happened three times, as I was about to leave, the slave called out to me: Come, you have been granted permission. I entered and greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I saw that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting, leaning on a mat, whose marks were visible on his blessed side. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Have you divorced your wives? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and said: "No." I proclaimed Allahu Akbar and said: O Messenger of Allah! Look, we Quraysh used to have dominance over our women, but when we reached Madinah, we encountered people whose women had dominance over them. Our women also started learning their ways. One day, I was angry with my wife over something, and she replied back to me. I was surprised, and she said: Are you surprised at my replying to you? The wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also reply to him and do not speak to him for the whole day. I said: Whoever does this is in loss and ruin. Are they satisfied that if Allah's wrath descends upon them due to the Prophet's displeasure, they will not be destroyed? Hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled. I further said: O Messenger of Allah! After that, I went to Hafsa and said: Do not be deceived by thinking that your friend is more beloved and dear to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled again. Then I said: O Messenger of Allah! May I be frank? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted me, so I raised my head and began to look around the blessed house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah! I did not see anything there that would attract repeated glances, except for three raw hides. Seeing this, I said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah to grant your Ummah abundance and ease. Persia and Rome, who do not worship Allah, have been given great prosperity. Hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat up straight and said: O son of Khattab! Are you still in doubt? All things have been given to those people in this world. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray for my forgiveness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had actually sworn that he would not go to his wives for a month, because he was very angry and grieved with them, until Allah Almighty revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this matter.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when revelation would descend upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a sound like the buzzing of bees could be heard near his blessed face. Once, this happened and we paused for a while. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) faced the Qiblah, spread his hands, and made this supplication: "O Allah! Grant us more, do not decrease us; honor us, do not disgrace us; give to us, do not deprive us; prefer us, do not prefer others over us; be pleased with us and make us pleased." After this, he said: "Just now, ten such verses have been revealed to me that if a person adheres to them, he will enter Paradise." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the first ten verses of Surah Al-Mu’minun.

Abu Ubaid says that once, on the occasion of Eid, I was present in the service of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He led the prayer before the sermon without any call to prayer (adhan) or iqamah. Then, while delivering the sermon, he said: O people! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on these two days. On the day of Eid al-Fitr, because it is the day your fasting ends, and on the day of Eid al-Adha, so that you may eat from the meat of your sacrificial animal.

Hadith 226

Sayyiduna Abu Wa'il says that Sabi bin Ma'bad was a Christian man who accepted Islam. He intended to participate in jihad. Meanwhile, someone said: First perform Hajj, then participate in jihad. So he came to Ash'ari, who instructed Sabi to enter into the state of Ihram for both Hajj and Umrah together. He did so. While reciting the Talbiyah, he passed by Zaid bin Suhan and Salman bin Rabiah. One of them said to the other that this person is more astray than his camel. Sabi heard this and it weighed heavily on him. When he presented himself before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he mentioned to him what Zaid and Salman had said. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amir bin Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once at a place called ‘Usfan, Nafi‘ bin ‘Abd al-Harith met Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed him as the governor of Makkah Mukarramah. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him, “Whom have you appointed as your deputy in your absence?” He replied, “‘Abdur Rahman bin Abza.” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, “Who is Ibn Abza?” He replied, “He is one of our freed slaves.” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “You have appointed a slave as your deputy?” He replied, “He is a reciter of the Noble Qur’an, knows the laws of inheritance and obligations, and has the ability to judge.” Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has already said regarding such people that indeed Allah will honor many people through this Book and will abase many others through it.”

Abu Al-Bakhtari narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once said to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Stretch out your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you, because I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that you are the trustworthy one of this Ummah." He replied: "I cannot go ahead of the one whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to lead us and who continued to lead us until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed some things. I said: O Messenger of Allah! There were other people who were more deserving of this than those whom you left out. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They gave me the choice either to give in an inappropriate manner or to be considered miserly, but I am not miserly." (Benefit: The meaning is that if I did not give anything to the people of Suffa, it was not because I kept something back for myself, and if I gave to others, I did so keeping their needs in view.)
Hadith 235
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): If a person becomes impure by choice, can he sleep in that state? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! Let him perform ablution as for prayer and then sleep."

The previous narration is also mentioned through another chain of transmission, which has already been stated in the wording.

Once, Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) saw Sa’d bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) wiping over his leather socks, so he asked, “Do you also do this?” He replied, “Yes!” Then both of them went together to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Leader of the Believers! Please explain the issue of wiping over leather socks to our nephew.” Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “In the past, we used to wipe over the leather socks with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we still do.” Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, “Even if a person has just come after defecating or urinating?” He replied, “Yes! Even if he has just come after defecating or urinating.” Nafi’ says that after this, Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) also started wiping over the leather socks and continued to do so until he took them off, and he did not specify any particular time for it.

Sayyiduna Malik bin Aws bin Al-Hadthan narrates that once I made a transaction of silver in exchange for gold with Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Wait a little, our treasurer will be coming from 'Ghabah'." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "No! It is narrated from Ubaidullah bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when, during the time of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), those among the Arabs who could apostatize did so, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "How can you fight against these people when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah (there is no god but Allah). Whoever says La ilaha illallah has protected his life and wealth from me, except for the right of Islam, and his reckoning is with Allah'?" Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I will surely fight against the one who differentiates between prayer and zakat, because zakat is the due right of wealth. By Allah! If they withhold even a young goat which they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I will fight them for it." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then I understood that Allah Almighty had opened the chest of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this matter, and I realized that his opinion was indeed correct."
