Humaid bin Abdur Rahman says that once in Basra, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated this hadith to us: When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was wounded in a murderous attack, I was the first to reach him. He said, "Remember three things from me, because I fear that by the time people arrive, I may not survive and people may not find me: No decision should be made regarding kalalah, no one should appoint a deputy or caliph over the people, and every slave of mine is free." People said to him, "O Leader of the Believers! Appoint someone as your successor." He replied, "Whichever course I choose, a person better than me has chosen it before me. So if I leave the matter of the people to themselves, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also did so, and if I appoint someone as my successor, a person better than me also appointed his successor, that is, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)." I said, "Glad tidings of Paradise to you! You had the honor of the companionship of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for a long time, then you were made the Leader of the Believers, and you proved your strength and fulfilled the trust." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "The glad tidings of Paradise you have given me—by Allah! If I had the blessings and treasures of the world and all that is in it, I would give them as ransom for the terrifying events and scenes that will come before me before the real situation becomes clear. And as for the caliphate over the Muslims that you mentioned—by Allah! My wish is that I escape from it with nothing for or against me, neither any benefit nor any burden upon me. However, what you mentioned about the companionship of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is true."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote in a letter to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that teach your sons swimming and your warriors archery. Thus, they began to learn archery by targeting various things. In this context, an unknown arrow struck a child, causing his death. He had only one heir, and that was his maternal uncle. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this matter. He replied in writing that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever has no mawla, Allah and His Messenger are his mawla, and whoever has no heir, his maternal uncle will be his heir."
Hadith 324
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The inheritance of wealth will go to the one who receives the wala', whether he is a father or a son."

Abis bin Rabi’ah says that I once saw Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) come near the Black Stone and address it, saying: By Allah! I know that you are merely a stone that can neither benefit nor harm anyone. If I had not seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kissing you, I would never have kissed you. Saying this, he then approached and kissed it.

Dajeen, whose kunyah was Abu al-Ghasan, says that once I came to Madinah Munawwarah, where I met Aslam, the freed slave of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). I requested him to narrate a hadith from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He excused himself and said that he feared making an addition or omission. When we used to ask Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to narrate a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would give the same reply, saying that he feared making an addition or omission. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever attributes a false statement to me, let him take his place in Hell."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Battle of Khaybar, some companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were seen coming from the front, saying, "So-and-so is also a martyr, so-and-so is also a martyr," until they passed by a man about whom they also said, "He is also a martyr." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Never! I have seen him in Hell because he stole a cloak from the spoils of war." After that, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Khattab! Go and announce among the people that only the believers will enter Paradise." So I went out and began to announce that only the believers will enter Paradise.
Hadith 329
On one occasion, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) swore by his father. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped him and said: Whoever swears by anything other than Allah has committed shirk.

Nafi' reports that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had an extension made in the Prophet's Mosque from the pillar to the noble enclosure, and later Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) also increased its structure in his expansion. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that if I had not heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying that we wish to further expand the structure of this mosque, I would never have made any addition to it.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once said: Allah Almighty sent the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth; He revealed the Book to him, in which there was also the verse of stoning, according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also carried out stoning, and we also carried out stoning. Then he said that we used to read this command as well: "Do not show aversion to your forefathers, for this is disbelief on your part." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not exaggerate about me as was exaggerated about Sayyiduna Isa (peace be upon him); I am only a servant, so say: He is Allah’s servant and His Messenger."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): I have heard people saying something, and I will not fall short in conveying it to you. People think that you are not appointing anyone as your successor? He lowered his head for a moment and then raised it and said: Allah Himself will protect His religion. I will not appoint anyone as my successor because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also did not appoint anyone as his successor, and if I do appoint someone as successor, then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also did the same.
Hadith 333
Malik bin Aws narrates that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once called me, then he mentioned the complete hadith, in which Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Inheritance is not established in our wealth; whatever we leave behind is charity."
Hadith 334
It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, the people began to weep. Upon this, Sayyiduna 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The deceased is punished because of the weeping of his people of the neighborhood over him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away and after him Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was chosen as the Caliph, and those among the Arabs who could become disbelievers, became so, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "How can you fight against these people when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'I have been commanded to fight the people until they say «لا اله الا الله», whoever says «لا اله الا الله» has protected his life and wealth from me, except for the right of Islam, and his reckoning is with Allah?'" Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I will certainly fight against the one who differentiates between prayer and zakat, because zakat is the due right of wealth. By Allah! If they withhold even a young goat which they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I will fight them for it." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I understood that Allah Almighty had opened the heart of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this matter, and I realized that his opinion was indeed correct."
Hadith 336

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the wealth obtained from Banu Nadir was from the category of Fay’ (spoils of war without fighting), which Allah granted to His Prophet, and the Muslims did not have to ride horses or any other mounts for it. Therefore, this wealth was exclusively for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would give his pure wives their yearly maintenance from it at one time, and whatever remained, he would use to provide horses and other weapons (that could be used in jihad).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the night comes from here and the day departs from there and the sun sets, then the fasting person should break his fast. By 'here' and 'there' is meant the east and the west."

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I had a great desire to ask Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about (those two noble wives of the Prophet ﷺ), but I did not have the courage, and two years passed. Then once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out for Hajj, and I was with him. On the way, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) started walking away from the people, so I also followed him carrying a water vessel. He fulfilled his natural need, and when he returned, I poured water on his hands and said: O Commander of the Faithful! Who are those two women who wanted to prevail over the Prophet ﷺ? He replied: Aisha and Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Abu Al-Ajfa’ Salmi says that once I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying: O people! Do not set high dowries for your wives, because if these things were a source of honor in this world or counted as piety in the sight of Allah, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have been the most deserving of them. Yet, the dowry of none of the Prophet’s wives or daughters was more than twelve uqiyah. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The second thing is that when someone is killed during jihad or dies a natural death, you people say that such and such person became a martyr, such and such person departed from this world as a martyr. However, it is also possible that he had hidden gold or silver in the back of his mount or under the saddle, with which he intended to trade. Therefore, do not say with certainty about anyone that he is a martyr. However, you can say that whoever is killed or dies in the path of Allah (he is a martyr) and will enter Paradise, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say.

Once, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the pulpit on Friday to deliver the sermon. He praised Allah Almighty, mentioned the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and recalled Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he said, "I have seen a dream, and it seems to me that the time of my departure from this world is near. In my dream, I saw that a rooster pecked me twice." Then he said, "People are telling me to appoint my successor. It is certain that Allah will neither let His religion be lost nor the caliphate with which Allah sent His Prophet. Now, if my decision is made soon, I am appointing a council of those six persons with whom the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was pleased at the time of his passing. When you pledge allegiance to any one of them, then listen to him and obey him. I know that some people will try to create discord in the matter of caliphate. By Allah! I have fought against such people with my own hands in defense of Islam. These people are enemies of Allah, disbelievers, and misguided. By Allah! After keeping the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I do not remember that he was ever displeased with me in any matter except the issue of kalalah, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was extremely displeased with me, to the extent that he placed his finger on my chest and said, 'For you, the last verse of Surah An-Nisa, which was revealed in the summer, is sufficient in this matter.' If I remain alive, I will resolve this issue in such a way that both those who read this verse and those who do not will know the solution. And I make Allah a witness that I have sent governors and commanders to various cities only so that they may teach people the religion, explain the Sunnahs of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to them, distribute the spoils of war among them, do justice among them, and present before me those issues for which they have no solution." Then he said, "O people! You eat from two trees which I consider foul (one is garlic and the other is onion, which cause bad breath when eaten raw). I have seen that if the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smelled their odor from anyone's mouth, he would order and that person would be taken by hand and expelled from the mosque, and not only that, but people would accompany him to Jannat al-Baqi and then return. If anyone wants to eat them, let him cook them to remove their odor." The narrator says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered this sermon on Friday, and on Wednesday, the 26th of Dhu al-Hijjah, he was attacked.
Hadith 342
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Although Hajj Tamattu' is the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I fear that people will spend the night with their wives under the trees of Pilu and then in the morning get up and make the intention for Hajj.
Hadith 343
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performing ablution after having become impure, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over his leather socks and offered prayer.

Sayyiduna Iyad Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was present at the Battle of Yarmouk. Five commanders were appointed over us: Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan, Ibn Hasnah, Khalid ibn Walid, and Iyad ibn Ghanm (note that this does not refer to the narrator of the hadith himself). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had instructed that when the battle begins, your leader should be Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator says: We wrote a letter to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying that death is leaping towards us, so send us reinforcements. He replied in writing: Your letter has reached me in which you requested help from me. I am telling you about such a Being whose help is the strongest and whose army is the most ever-present; that Being is Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. Seek help from Him, for the help of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was also granted at the Battle of Badr, even though they were much fewer in number than you. Therefore, when my letter reaches you, begin fighting them, and do not repeatedly ask me for help. The narrator says: Then we began fighting and inflicted a shameful defeat upon the polytheists, killing them for four farsakhs, and we also obtained spoils of war. After that, the Mujahideen consulted among themselves. Sayyiduna Iyad (may Allah be pleased with him) suggested that each Mujahid should be given ten dirhams per person. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Who will take care of this with me? A young man said: If you are not displeased, I will do it. Saying this, he went ahead. I saw the locks of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah's (may Allah be pleased with him) hair waving in the air, and that young man was riding behind him on an Arabian horse.
Hadith 345
Ali bin Zaid says that once I came to Madinah Munawwarah, at that time I was wearing a silk cloak. Sayyiduna Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) said to me, "What will you do with these clothes?" I heard my father narrate a hadith from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Silk is worn by the one who has no share in the Hereafter."
Hadith 346
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man deliberately and intentionally killed his son. This matter was presented before Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so he made one hundred camels as blood money obligatory upon him: thirty hiqqahs, thirty jadha’ahs, and forty thaniyyahs, meaning those that have entered their second year. And he said: The killer does not inherit. And if I had not heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say that a father is not to be killed in retaliation for his son, I would have killed you.
Hadith 347
In another chain of narration, there is also this addition that then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called the brother of the murdered person and handed over the camels of blood money to him.
Hadith 348
This same hadith from Mujahid is also narrated through this second chain, and he says that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made one hundred camels obligatory as blood money for it: thirty hiqqahs, thirty jadha’ahs, and forty thaniyyahs, that is, those that have entered their second year, and all of them should be pregnant. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called the brother of the murdered man and handed over those camels of blood money to him and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that the killer will not get anything.

Malik bin Aws says that once Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) brought their dispute to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) for judgment. Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Decide between me and him regarding such and such matters." The people also said, "Decide between them." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I will not make any decision between the two of them because both of them know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Inheritance is not established in our property; whatever we leave behind is all charity.'"
Hadith 350
Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the last verse revealed in the Noble Qur'an was regarding usury, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not get the opportunity to fully explain it before his blessed passing. Therefore, abandon usury as well, and leave whatever contains even a little doubt.
Hadith 351
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) used to give the fatwa permitting Hajj Tamattu'. One day, a man came to him and said, "Hold back some of your fatwas; do you not know that behind you, the Commander of the Faithful has issued new rulings regarding the rites of Hajj?" When these two gentlemen met, Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him about this. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I know that Hajj Tamattu' was performed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions as well, but I do not like that people spend the night with their wives under the shade of the peelu tree and then set out for Hajj in the morning while drops of water are still dripping from their heads."
Hadith 352
Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went for Hajj. There, in view of specific circumstances, he wanted to deliver a sermon, but Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him that at this time, a large number of the weaker section of people are present; you should postpone your sermon until you return to Madinah Munawwarah (because the people there are wise, they will understand your words, whereas these people may not understand properly and may cause unrest). Thus, when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to Madinah Munawwarah, one day I went near the pulpit and heard him saying: Some people say, "What is the status of Rajm (stoning)? In the Book of Allah, only the punishment of lashes is mentioned." Whereas the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also enforced the punishment of Rajm, and after him, we also did so. And if people did not say that Umar has added something to the Book of Allah which is not in it, I would have written the verse of this ruling on the margin of the Noble Qur'an.
Hadith 353
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that I saw with my own eyes the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turning sides due to hunger, and he could not even find inferior dates with which he could fill his stomach.
Hadith 354
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The deceased is punished in his grave because of the lamentation that is done over him."
Hadith 355
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that such people have testified to me (whose words are trustworthy, among them is Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who in my view is the most trustworthy of them all) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade praying at two times: one is that after the Asr prayer until sunset, no voluntary prayer should be performed, and the other is that after the Fajr prayer until sunrise, no prayer should be performed.

Amr bin Maymoon says that once Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) led us in the Fajr prayer at Muzdalifah and said that the polytheists would not return before sunrise and used to say, "Let Mount Thabir become bright." Hadith 359
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): If I become impure at night, what should I do? Hadith 360
Abu Al-Hakam says that I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the nabidh (fermented drink) of a pitcher, so he narrated this hadith from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) pitchers, gourds, green oily pots, or vessels.

Abdullah bin Sarjis says that I once saw Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) kissing the Black Stone, and addressing it, he said, "I know that you are a stone, but I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kissing you."
