Khalid bin Sameer says that once Abdullah bin Rabah came to us. I saw that many people had gathered around him and they were saying that "the horseman of the Messenger" Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) had told us that once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an army called "Jaish Umara" and said: "Your commander is Zaid bin Harithah. If Zaid is martyred, then Ja'far will be the commander. If Ja'far is also martyred, then Abdullah bin Rawahah Ansari will be the commander." Upon this, Hazrat Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you. I did not think that you would appoint Zaid as commander over me." The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Set out, for you do not know in which matter there is goodness." So that army set out. After some time had passed, one day the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and ordered the call for "the prayer is ready" to be made, and said, "There is a sorrowful news. Shall I not tell you about the army of the Mujahideen? They set out from here and when they faced the enemy, Zaid was martyred. Pray for his forgiveness." The people did so. Then Ja'far bin Abi Talib took the flag and attacked the enemy fiercely until he too was martyred. I bear witness to his martyrdom, so pray for his forgiveness. Then Abdullah bin Rawahah took the flag and stood firm with great perseverance until he too was martyred. Pray for his forgiveness as well. Then Khalid bin Walid took the flag, although no one had appointed him as commander. Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his finger and said, "O Allah! He is one of Your swords, so help him." From that day, Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) was called "Saifullah" (the Sword of Allah). Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Set out to help your brothers, and let no man stay behind." So, in that intense heat, people set out on foot and on mounts.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he was traveling with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a route to Makkah Mukarramah. He, along with some of his companions who were in the state of ihram, lagged behind, but he himself was not in the state of ihram. He saw a wild donkey, so he quickly mounted his horse and asked his companions for his whip, but they refused. Then he asked for a spear, but they also refused to give it. Eventually, he himself got down, took it, and ran swiftly towards the wild donkey and hunted it. Some of the noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) ate from it, while some refused to eat. When they reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they asked about it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is Allah who has fed you this food."
Hadith 22568
The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain, however, in this there is also this addition that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have any of its meat left?"

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the year of Hudaybiyyah, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out after donning the Ihram for Umrah. During this journey, Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) had also donned the Ihram, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had already been informed that there could be an encounter with the enemy at a place called "Ghaiqah." Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and I too was going along with my companions when suddenly they began to laugh upon seeing each other. When I paid attention, I saw a wild donkey. I requested their help, but they refused to help me because they were in the state of Ihram.

During this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to doze off and leaned from his mount, so I supported him without waking him up, until he became upright on his mount. Then he leaned again, and I straightened him without waking him, until he became upright on his mount. Then he leaned even more than before, until he was about to fall. I came again and supported him, so he raised his head and said, "Who is it?" I replied, "Abu Qatadah." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Since when have you been walking with me like this?" I replied, "I have been walking with you like this all night." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "May Allah protect you as you have protected the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I think we should camp." So, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached near a tree and camped there. Then he said, "Do you see anyone?" I replied, "Here is a rider," until seven riders gathered. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You take care of our prayer." So we slept, and only the heat of the sun woke us up. We woke up, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rode off from there, and we also started walking slowly. When we reached a place, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) camped and said, "Does any of you have water?" I replied, "Yes! There is a little water in my ablution vessel." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Bring it." I brought that water, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Make ablution with it." So all the people made ablution, and some water was left. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), "Take care of the ablution vessel, for soon a strange matter will appear from it." Then Hazrat Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the call to prayer, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) prayed two rak'ahs (Sunnah), then prayed the morning prayer. (After that) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted, and we also mounted with him. One of us said to another, "What will be the expiation for our mistake in prayer, that we did not wake up?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "What are you people saying? If it is a worldly matter, then fine, but if it is a religious matter, then tell me as well." We said, "O Messenger of Allah! We were negligent in prayer." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "There is no negligence in sleep, but negligence is in wakefulness. If this happens to anyone, he should pray when he wakes up, and when the next day comes, he should pray at its time." Then he said, "What do you think the other people did?" They replied, "Yesterday you yourself said that if you do not reach water, you will remain thirsty, so people will be searching for water." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself said, "When the people woke up in the morning and did not find their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will be behind you. It is not befitting the status of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he would leave you behind and go ahead to the water.' If those people accept the words of Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), they will be guided." He said this three times. Then we reached the people when the day had advanced and the heat had increased. The people said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), thirst has destroyed us and our necks are breaking." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You have not been destroyed." Then he said, "O Abu Qatadah, bring my small bowl." I brought it, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then...
Hadith 22576
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting in the gathering of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a funeral passed by. He said, "This person is either one who has found relief or others have found relief from him." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by 'one who has found relief'?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "A believing servant, after being freed from the hardships and troubles of the world, finds comfort in the mercy of Allah." We asked, "What is meant by 'others have found relief from him'?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "From a wicked person, people, cities, trees, and even animals find relief."
Hadith 22577
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The one who serves drinks to the people drinks last himself.
Hadith 22578
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you enters the mosque, he should perform two rak‘ahs (as Tahiyyat al-Masjid) before sitting down.
Hadith 22579
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I once saw the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing prayer in such a way that he had Hazrat Zainab’s (may Allah be pleased with her) daughter, Umamah, on his shoulder. When the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand, he would lift her up, and when he would go into bowing (ruku‘), he would put her down.
Hadith 22580
Kabsha bint Ka'b, who was married to the son of Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), says: "Once Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to her house. Kabsha placed water for his ablution. Meanwhile, a cat came and began to drink water from that vessel. Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) tilted the vessel for it, until the cat was satisfied. He saw that I was looking at him in astonishment, so he said, 'Niece! Are you surprised at this?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not impure, because it is an animal that frequently comes and goes in your houses.'"
Hadith 22581
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the call to prayer (adhan) is given, do not stand up until you see me.
Hadith 22582
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his fasting, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became displeased. Seeing this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "We are pleased with Allah as our Lord, with Islam as our religion, and with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as our Messenger." Then the narrator mentioned the complete hadith.

Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that sometimes I used to see frightening dreams which would make me ill. One day I met Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and I mentioned this to him. He said that sometimes I also used to see such dreams which would make me ill, until I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Good dreams are from Allah, so when any of you sees a good dream, he should relate it only to the one whom he loves. And whoever sees a disliked dream should not mention it to anyone, but after seeing the dream, he should spit lightly three times to his left and seek refuge in Allah from its evil. In this way, that dream will not harm him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and mentioned that striving in the path of Allah (jihad fi sabilillah) and having faith in Allah are the most virtuous of all deeds. Then a man stood up and asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me, if I am martyred in the path of Allah, will Allah, by its blessing, expiate all my sins?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes! If you are martyred in the path of Allah in such a way that you remained steadfast with the intention of reward, advanced forward, and did not retreat, then Allah will expiate your sins." After some time had passed, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, "What did you say?" He repeated the same question, so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the same answer, but with this exception: "Except for debt. Jibreel (peace be upon him) informed me of this in the same way."
Hadith 22586
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a funeral was brought to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Has he left any debt behind?" The people replied, "Yes! Two dinars." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Has he left anything in inheritance?" The people replied, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then you should offer the funeral prayer of your companion yourselves." Upon this, Hazrat Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! His debt is upon me." Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led his funeral prayer.
Hadith 22587
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the call to prayer (adhan) is given, do not stand up until you see me.
Hadith 22588
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fasting on the Day of Arafah (9th of Dhul-Hijjah) is an expiation for two years, and fasting on the Day of Ashura is an expiation for one year.
Hadith 22589
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I once saw the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing prayer in such a way that he had Umamah, the daughter of Hazrat Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), on his shoulders. Whenever the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand, he would lift her up, and when he would go into bowing (ruku‘), he would put her down. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain, but in this one it is also specified that this incident took place during the Fajr prayer.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the year of Hudaybiyyah, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out after donning the Ihram for Umrah. I was also with him, but on this journey, I had not donned the Ihram, although my companions had donned the Ihram. On the way, I saw a wild donkey. I attacked it myself and hunted it. I submitted in the presence of the Messenger of Allah that I had hunted a wild donkey, and also that I had not donned the Ihram, and that I had hunted it for you. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told the people: "Eat it." However, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not eat it himself because I had told him that I had hunted it for him.
Hadith 22591
Abdullah bin Muhammad says that once Hazrat Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Madinah Munawwarah, where he met Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After me, you will face favoritism." Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Then what did the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) command you to do at that time?" He replied, "The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to be patient." Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Then you all should be patient."
Hadith 22592
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once a funeral passed by the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "This person is either one who has found relief or others have found relief from him." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! (peace and blessings be upon him) What is meant by the one who has found relief?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A believing servant finds relief from the hardships and troubles of the world and attains comfort in the mercy of Allah." We asked, "What is meant by 'others have found relief from him'?" The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "From a wicked person, people, cities, trees, and even animals find relief."

Abu Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that sometimes I used to see frightening dreams, but I did not let them become a burden on myself until one day I met Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). I mentioned this matter to him, so he narrated this hadith to me: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Good dreams are from Allah and bad dreams are from Satan. Therefore, whoever sees a disliked dream should not mention it to anyone. Rather, after seeing the dream, he should spit lightly three times to his left and seek refuge in Allah from its evil. Hadith 22594
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you enters the mosque, he should perform two rak'ahs (as Tahiyyat al-Masjid) before sitting down.
Hadith 22595
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead us in prayer, and in the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr and Asr, he would recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another surah, and sometimes he would let us hear a verse from it. In the last two rak'ahs, he would recite only Surah Al-Fatihah. In the Fajr prayer, he would make the first rak'ah long.
