Khalid bin Ma'dan says that once we were present at the invitation of Abdul A'la bin Bilal. After finishing the meal, Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said, "I have stood here, but I am neither a preacher nor have I stood up with the intention of giving a speech. However, I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) recite this supplication after finishing the meal: 'Alhamdulillah katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan feehi ghayra makfiyyin wa laa muwadda'in wa laa mustaghna anhu.' Khalid says that Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated these words so many times that we memorized them."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) during the Farewell Pilgrimage. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was mounted on his camel, with his feet in the stirrups, which made him elevated, and he was saying: "Do you not hear?" Then the last person said, "What do you wish to say? (Your voice is reaching us and we are listening.)" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Worship your Lord, perform the five daily prayers, fast for one month, pay the zakat of your wealth, obey your leader, and enter the Paradise of your Lord." The narrator asked Hazrat Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) at what age he heard this hadith, and he replied: "When I was thirty years old, and I had pushed forward through the crowd."

After praising and glorifying Allah, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times, "Perhaps after this year you will not see me." At this, a tall man who seemed to be from the tribe of Sunu stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah! What should we do?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Worship your Lord, perform the five daily prayers, fast for one month, perform Hajj of the House of Allah, pay the zakat of your wealth with a happy heart, and enter the Paradise of your Lord."

After finishing, when he was about to leave, that man followed him, and I also followed behind him. The man repeated his statement. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "Is it not the case that you left your house after performing ablution well and joined us in prayer?" He replied, "Yes, indeed." It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a Muslim servant hears the call to prayer and stands up for ablution, then as soon as the first drop of water falls on his hands, his sins begin to be forgiven. When he rinses his mouth, puts water into his nose, and cleans his nose, the sins of his tongue and lips are removed with the first drop of water. When he washes his face, the sins of his eyes and ears are removed with the first drop of water. And when he washes his hands up to the elbows and his feet up to the ankles, all his previous dangerous sins are forgiven, and he becomes as free from sin as he was at the time of his birth. And when he stands for prayer, it becomes a means of raising his ranks, and if he sits, he sits forgiven.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whenever Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to me, he always instructed me to use the miswak, to the extent that I feared I would scrape off the front part of my mouth.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Love is from Allah and fame comes from the sky. Thus, when Allah loves a servant, He says to Jibreel (peace be upon him): "I love such-and-such person, so you also love him." Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) announces: "Allah loves such-and-such person, so you also love him." Then this love is placed in the hearts of the people of the earth. And when Allah dislikes a servant, He says to Jibreel (peace be upon him): "I dislike such-and-such person, so you also dislike him." Then Jibreel (peace be upon him) announces: "Your Lord dislikes such-and-such person, so you also dislike him." Thus, his dislike settles in the hearts of the people of the earth.

Abu Muslim says that once I went to Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was sitting in the mosque, picking out lice and putting them into pebbles. I said to him, "O Abu Umamah! A man has told me regarding you that you say: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) say that whoever performs ablution well, washes his hands and face, wipes his head and ears, then stands for the obligatory prayer, then on that day his sins will be forgiven—those to which he walked with his feet, those he committed with his hands, those his ears heard, those his eyes saw, and those thoughts that occurred in his heart?" He replied, "By Allah! I have heard this hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) so many times that I cannot count."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the Quranic verse "And he will be given to drink of pus" by saying: The inhabitant of Hell will be given the water of pus to drink. When that water is brought near to him, he will feel disgust for it. When it is brought even closer, his face will burn and the hair of his head will fall off. And when he swallows that water, his intestines will be cut to pieces until that water comes out from his anus. Regarding this, the Divine statement is: "And they will be given to drink boiling water so it cuts up their bowels" and "And if they call for relief, they will be relieved with water like molten brass, which will scald their faces..."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting in the gathering of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have committed a sin, so punish me according to the Book of Allah." In the meantime, the prayer was established, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer. After finishing, when he was about to leave, that man also followed behind, and I too followed him. He repeated his statement. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "Is it not so?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then Allah has forgiven your sin."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I presented myself in the court of the Messenger, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the mosque. I also joined the gathering. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, "O Abu Dharr, have you performed the prayer?" I replied, "No." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then stand up and perform the prayer." So I stood up, performed the prayer, and then rejoined the gathering. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Abu Dharr! Seek Allah's protection from the evil of the devils among humans and jinn." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Are there devils among humans as well?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Yes." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling regarding prayer?" He said, "It is the best subject; whoever wishes may gain little from it, and whoever wishes may gain much." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what is the ruling regarding fasting?" He said, "It is an obligation; whoever fulfills it, it suffices, and with Allah there is additional reward for it." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is the ruling regarding charity?" He said, "Its reward is multiplied twofold, threefold." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Which charity is the best?" He said, "Charity from the hard work of one who has little wealth, or the secret charity to a needy person." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Who was the first Prophet?" He said, "Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him)." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Was he a Prophet?" He said, "Yes, rather a Prophet with whom Allah, the Exalted, spoke." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! How many Messengers were sent?" He said, "A little over three hundred and ten, a great group." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Which is the greatest verse revealed to you?" He said, "Ayat al-Kursi."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood on a wheat-colored camel to deliver a sermon. On that day, Hazrat Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was riding behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said, "O people! Acquire knowledge before knowledge is taken away, and before knowledge is seized." And Allah Almighty revealed this command: "O you who believe! Do not ask about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you trouble..." After the revelation of this verse, we did not consider it good to ask too many questions from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and we were cautious about it. One day, we went to a Bedouin. He spread his sheet for us and sat for a long time, so much so that I saw the edge of the sheet hanging over his right eyebrow. After a while, we said to him, "Ask the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a question." So he said, "O Messenger of Allah! When the copies of the Qur'an will be among us, how will knowledge be taken away from us, while we ourselves have learned its commands and have taught them to our wives, children, and servants?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his blessed head, and due to anger, redness appeared on his blessed face. Then he said, "May your mother weep for you! The Jews and Christians also have the scriptures with them, but now they do not adhere to a single letter of what their prophets (peace be upon them) brought. Remember! The meaning of knowledge being taken away is that the bearers of knowledge will be taken away." He said this three times.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we set out with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for a jihad. A man passed by a cave where there was some water. He thought to himself that he should settle in that cave, sustain his life with the water present there, eat the vegetables growing nearby, and adopt seclusion from the world. Then he thought that first he should present this matter to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); if he granted permission, he would do so, otherwise not. So he came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I passed by a cave in which there is enough water and vegetables for my sustenance. I have thought of settling there and withdrawing from the world." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I have not been sent with Judaism or Christianity; I have been sent with the pure, upright religion of Hanifiyyah. By the One in whose hand is the life of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), going out in the way of Allah in the morning or evening is better than the world and whatever is in it, and for any one of you to stand in the ranks of jihad is better than sixty years of prayer."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once, during extremely hot weather, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Baqi’ Gharqad. Some people were walking behind the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the sound of their shoes, a thought arose in his heart. So, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and sent them ahead so that no thought of pride would enter his heart. After that, while passing by, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves where two men had been buried. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped there and asked, “Who have you buried here today?” The people replied, “O Messenger of Allah! So-and-so and so-and-so.” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “At this moment, they are being punished in their graves and are being tested.” The noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, “O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason for this?” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “One of them did not protect himself from urine drops, and the other used to engage in tale-bearing.” Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a fresh branch from a tree, broke it into two pieces, and placed them on both graves. The noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, “O Prophet of Allah! Why did you do this?” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “So that their punishment may be lessened.” The noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked, “O Prophet of Allah! For how long will they remain in punishment?” The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “This is a matter of the unseen, which no one knows except Allah. If confusion would not arise in your hearts or there was no fear of you disputing among yourselves, then you would also hear the sounds that I am hearing.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were present in the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us admonitions that softened the hearts, upon which Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep and continued to weep for a long time, and said, "Alas! If only I had died." The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Sa’d! You are wishing for death in my presence?" and repeated this three times. Then he said, "O Sa’d! If you have been created for Paradise, then the longer your life and the better your deeds, the better it is for you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say in the Farewell Pilgrimage sermon: Allah Almighty has given every rightful person his due, therefore there is no bequest for an heir. The child will belong to the owner of the bed, and for the adulterer there are stones, and their reckoning is upon Allah. Whoever attributes himself to anyone other than his father or to other than his masters, upon him is the curse of Allah, which will follow him until the Day of Resurrection. No woman should spend anything from her house without her husband's permission. Someone asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Not even food?" The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That is our best wealth." Then he said: A borrowed item should be returned, a gift should be reciprocated, a debt should be repaid, and the debtor is responsible.
