Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

A man from Banu Suwa’ah narrates that I said to Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), “Tell me about the character of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).” Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied, “Have you not read the Qur’an?” { وَإِنَّک لَعَلَی خُلُقٍ عَظِیمٍ } She said that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting with his companions. I had prepared food for him, and Hafsa had also prepared food for him. Hafsa served before me. She says that I told my maid, “Go and overturn Hafsa’s bowl.” She says that Hafsa signaled to her maid to place the bowl in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So they overturned the bowl. The bowl broke and the food scattered. She says that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered the bowl and whatever had fallen on the ground, he also collected it in the bowl, and then everyone ate. Then when my bowl was brought, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent that bowl to Hafsa and said, “Take this bowl in place of your bowl, and eat what is in it.” Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says, “I did not see anything (of displeasure) on the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) because of this incident.”

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one of the noble wives of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a bowl of tharid as a gift to him. At that time, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of another wife. So that wife struck the bowl, causing it to fall and break. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) began gathering the tharid in the bowl with his own hand and said: "Eat! Your mother has been overcome." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) waited until a sound bowl arrived, and he took it and gave it to the owner of the broken bowl.

Hazrat Shurayh says: Whoever breaks a piece of wood, the broken wood will belong to the one who broke it, and he will be liable for its equivalent. And (Imam) Abu Hanifa's opinion is mentioned contrary to this: and he has said that its price will be obligatory upon him.
