Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: When Allah Almighty created all creation, He wrote with His own hand for Himself that My mercy prevails over My wrath.

The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you do not commit sins, Allah Almighty will bring another creation who will commit sins, and Allah Almighty will forgive them.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if there were no such creatures for Allah Almighty who would commit sins, then Allah the Exalted would create a new creation who would commit sins, and then on the Day of Judgment they would be forgiven.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ayyub that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: If you do not commit sins, Allah will bring a people who will commit sins, then Allah will forgive them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Salman that when Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was shown the hidden (wondrous) secrets of the earth and the heavens, he saw a man committing adultery with a woman. He prayed against him, and he was destroyed. Then he saw another and prayed against him, and he too was destroyed. Then he saw a third and prayed against him, and he too was destroyed. Allah Almighty commanded: "Bring My servant down; My servants should not be destroyed."

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the believers are independent of intercession; intercession is for the sinners.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah Almighty has spread out His two hands for the sinner of the night so that he may repent during the day, and for the sinner of the day so that he may repent during the night. The door of repentance is open until the sun rises from the west.

It is narrated from Hazrat Wa'il that on the Day of Judgment, Allah will conceal His servant's sins, then, covering him with His mercy and veil of concealment, He will ask him, "Do you know what this is?" He will reply, "Yes, O Allah!" Allah Almighty will say, "Bear witness that I have forgiven you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Salman that Allah Almighty created one hundred mercies, then He distributed one mercy among the creation. Every mercy is greater than whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Among these mercies is that a mother loves and shows compassion to her child, and because of this mercy, birds and wild animals drink water. When the Day of Judgment comes, Allah Almighty will take back this mercy from the creation and will make this mercy along with the other ninety-nine mercies for the righteous. Regarding this, Allah has said: { رَحْمَتِی وَسِعَتْ کُلَّ شَیْئٍ ، فَسَأَکْتُبُہَا لِلَّذِینَ یَتَّقُونَ }

The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On the day Allah created the heavens and the earth, He created one hundred mercies. He placed one mercy in the earth, and because of it, a mother shows mercy to her child, and animals show mercy to one another. When the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah will complete all one hundred mercies with that mercy.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mughith that in the previous nations there was a man who used to commit sins, then one day he remembered and said, "O Allah! Forgive me, for You are the One who forgives." So he was forgiven.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that there was a sinful man whose name was Al-Kifl. He liked a woman, so he gave her fifty dinars. When he intended to commit a wrongful act with her, the woman began to tremble. Al-Kifl asked, "What has happened to you?" The woman said, "This is an act which I have never done before." Al-Kifl said, "You are unable to commit this sin, while I have been doing it for such a long time! By God, I will never commit a sin again after today." Then, that very night, he passed away. When morning came, the people of Bani Israel began to say, "Who will perform the funeral prayer for so-and-so?" Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) states that it was found written on his door that Allah Almighty has forgiven Al-Kifl.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mughith that there was a man who had been worshipping in his church for sixty years. One day, there was a heavy rain. He looked out from his church and saw water, a pond, greenery, and vegetables, etc. He said, "If I go down, I will walk and see." Then he did so. During this, he met a woman. He started talking to her, and the woman kept conversing with him until he committed a wrong act. Then he placed his bag, in which there was bread. Rain came, with which he performed ghusl (ritual bath). Then his appointed time arrived. A beggar passed by there who was in dire need of his bread, so he took the bread from there, and this man passed away. The deeds of his sixty years were weighed, and the side of his sins became heavier. Then the bread was placed on the scale, and it became heavier, so he was forgiven.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that there was a monk named Abdullah who worshipped in his church for sixty years. A woman came to live in his neighborhood; the monk committed adultery with her for six nights. Then he fled and took refuge in a mosque. Three days passed and he ate nothing. A loaf of bread was brought to him; he divided it into two parts, giving half to the person on his right and half to the person on his left. Allah Almighty sent the Angel of Death, who seized his soul. His sixty years of deeds were placed on one side of the scale, and his sins were placed on the other side; the side with the sins outweighed. Then the bread was placed, and that side became heavier than the side with the sins.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the time of Hazrat Abu Musa’s (may Allah be pleased with him) death approached, he said: O my sons! Remember the man with the bread. There was a man who worshipped in his monastery for seventy years. Then one day he came down, and Satan appeared before his eyes in the form of a woman. He committed adultery with her for seven days and seven nights. Then his mistake became clear to him, so he set out to repent. Whenever he took a step, he would pray and prostrate. At night, he took shelter in a shop in which there were twelve poor people. He was very tired, so he placed himself between two people. There was a monk who used to send them a loaf of bread every day and would give each person a loaf. Then the bread-giver came and gave each person a loaf of bread, and he also passed by the man who had left the monastery to repent. He thought he was also poor, so he gave him a loaf as well. One of them, who was left out, said to the bread-giver: What happened that you did not give me my bread? He said: Ask, did I give two loaves to any one of you? The people said: No. He said: I have withheld it from you. By God, tonight you will not get anything. The man who was repenting intended to give the loaf that was given to him to the one who was left out, so he gave it to him. In the morning, the man who was repenting was found dead. His seventy years of good deeds were weighed against the sins of those seven nights, but they did not outweigh them. Then the loaf of bread was weighed against the sins of those seven nights, and the side of the bread became heavier. Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Remember the man with the bread.

Hazrat Abdullah passed by a preacher who was reminding people about Hell. Hazrat Abdullah said, "O one who reminds, do not make people despair. Allah has said: { یَا عِبَادِی الَّذِینَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَی أَنْفُسِہِمْ لاَ تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَۃِ اللہِ }."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ka'b that when the angels saw the sins of human beings, they said, "O Allah! They commit sins." Allah Almighty said, "If you were like them, you would do what they are doing. So select two angels from among yourselves." They selected Harut and Marut. Allah Almighty said to these two angels, "You are messengers between Me and the people; there is no one between Me and you. Do not associate anyone with Me, do not steal, do not commit adultery." Hazrat Abdullah said: Hazrat Ka'b said that they did not fulfill this covenant until they fell into that which was forbidden to them.

A man came to Hazrat Ibn Masood complaining about his sins and asked him regarding them. Hazrat Ibn Masood did not pay attention to him and turned towards the people, engaging in conversation with them. When Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) noticed him, he saw that the man was crying. Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "The purpose for which you have come, now its time has arrived. Paradise has seven doors, each of which opens and closes, except for the door of repentance. There is an angel appointed over it. So keep doing good deeds and do not despair."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: All humans are sinners, and the best of sinners are those who repent.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Qalabah that when Allah cast Iblis out, he asked Allah for respite, so Allah Almighty granted him respite until the Day of Resurrection. Satan said, "O Allah, by Your honor, as long as there is a soul in the body of the children of Adam, I will keep leading them towards Hell." Allah Almighty said, "By My honor and majesty, I will keep covering their sins through repentance as long as there is a soul in their bodies."

It is narrated from Hazrat Malik that it was written in the Zabur: I am Allah, there is no deity except Me, I am the King of all kings, the hearts of all kings are in My control. So, when a nation does good deeds, I appoint a kind king over them, and when a nation disobeys Me, I make the kings a trial for them. Do not occupy yourselves with speaking ill of the kings, nor turn towards them; turn towards Me and repent, and I will make them merciful to you.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that in the previous nations before you, there was a man among a people of disbelievers, and among them were some righteous people as well. That man said: "I will surely go to that righteous town so that I may also become one of the righteous." He set out to go to that town, but death overtook him. Regarding him, there was a dispute between an angel and Satan; one said, "I am more deserving of him," and the other said, "I am more deserving of him." Allah Almighty decided between them through some of His armies. He said to them, "Measure the distance between the two towns; whichever town he is closer to, he will be counted among them." They measured the distance and found him closer to the town of the righteous, so he was counted among them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A man killed ninety-nine people, then he thought of repenting. He inquired about a scholar, and he was informed about a scholar. He went to that scholar and said, "I have killed ninety-nine people, can I repent?" The scholar said, "Repentance after ninety-nine murders?" So the man drew his sword and killed him as well, thus completing one hundred. Then he again thought of repenting and inquired about a scholar. He was told about a scholar, so he went to that scholar and said, "I have killed one hundred people, can I repent?" The scholar said to him, "Leave the town in which you are and go to the town of the righteous; go to such-and-such town and worship your Lord there." So the man set out for that town, and on the way, the time of his death came. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed over him. Iblis said, "I have more right to him because he never disobeyed me for even a moment." The angels of mercy said, "He set out with the intention of repentance." Allah sent another angel, and they took their dispute to him. That angel said, "Measure the distance between the two towns; whichever town he is closer to, count him among its people." When the man realized his death was near, he dragged himself towards the town of the righteous. Allah made him closer to the town of the righteous and distanced him from the town of the wicked, so he was counted among the people of the righteous.

Hazrat Safwan narrates that I was holding the hand of Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) when a person came to him and asked, "What have you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding al-Najwa?" Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) replied, "I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that: On the Day of Resurrection, Allah Almighty will bring the believer close, so much so that He will place His hand of mercy upon him and will conceal him from the people. Then Allah Almighty will say, 'O servant! Do you know about such and such sins?' He will reply, 'Yes, my Lord.' Then Allah Almighty will say the same, and the servant will confess, until when he has confessed his sins and becomes certain that he is doomed, Allah Almighty will say, 'I had concealed them for you in the world, and today I have forgiven them for you.' Then he will be given the record of his good deeds. As for the disbelievers and hypocrites, the witnesses will say about them that { ہَؤُلاَئِ الَّذِینَ کَذَبُوا عَلَی رَبِّہِمْ ، أَلاَ لَعَنَۃُ اللہِ عَلَی الظَّالِمِینَ }."

Hazrat Aun says: He will be informed that forgiveness was granted even before the sin.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A man set out from his town to another town with the intention of visiting his brother. Allah appointed an angel for him on the way. The angel asked him, "Where are you intending to go?" The man replied, "I have a brother in that town; I am going to visit him for the sake of Allah." The angel asked, "Is there any favor of his upon you which you are seeking to repay?" The man replied, "No, rather I love him for the sake of Allah, the Exalted." The angel said, "Listen, I am a messenger of Allah to you. Verily, Allah loves you as you love your brother for His sake."

It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah bin Aamir that a person's sins will be presented before him, and he will pass with the burden of his sins. Then Allah Almighty will say to him, "I was very merciful to you," and then Allah will forgive his sins.

Hazrat Ata bin Yasar says that on the Day of Judgment, the hopeless people will be held back, and people will pass by trampling over their necks.

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), in the explanation of the verse { فَطَلِّقُوہُنَّ لِعِدَّتِہِنَّ } of the Holy Qur'an, says that divorce should be given to them when they are pure and no intercourse has taken place with them in that period of purity.
