Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Bakr bin Muhammad narrates that Habib bin Zaid was killed by Musaylimah. In the Battle of Yamama, his brother Abdullah bin Zaid and their mother set out to fight. Their mother had sworn that she would not touch water until Musaylimah was killed. Thus, mother and son set out with the army. Abdullah bin Zaid says that he kept Musaylimah in his sight and then attacked him and struck him with a spear. Musaylimah advanced towards him with the spear, and one of the people called out to me to strike him in the mouth with the spear. He did not understand this. Then he was called out to throw the spear with his hand. He threw the spear with his hand, and Musaylimah was overpowered.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Battle of Yamama, I met Hazrat Thabit bin Qais while he was in a state of intense anger. I said to him, "O uncle! Do you not see how fierce the fighting is among the people today?" He replied, "Yes, nephew, I have now seen it."

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that I came to Hazrat Abdullah bin Makhramah during the Battle of Yamamah; he was lying on the battlefield in a severely wounded state. I stood by him. He said to me, "O Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with you both)! Has the fasting person broken his fast (i.e., has the time for breaking the fast arrived)?" I replied, "Yes." He said, "Bring me water in this cup so that I may also break my fast." I went towards the pond, but it was filled with blood. I cleared away the blood, filled the cup with water, and brought it to him, but he had passed away.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I was between Hazrat Khalid bin Walid and Hazrat Bara’ during the Battle of Yamama. Hazrat Khalid sent an army for battle, but they were defeated and returned. After that, Hazrat Bara’ was overcome with trembling, and I calmed him by laying him down on the ground. He was saying, “My fast has been broken.” Then Hazrat Khalid sent another group for battle, but they too were defeated and returned. Hazrat Khalid raised his gaze towards the sky and then looked at the ground for a long time. Whenever Hazrat Khalid intended to do something, he would do so in this manner. Then he said, “O Bara’! You attack.” Hazrat Bara’ asked, “Right now?” He replied, “Yes, right now.” So Hazrat Bara’ mounted his horse and began to strike it with a whip. That scene is as if before my eyes when the horse was shaking its tail. He praised and glorified Allah and said, “O people of the city! You have no city. Allah is One, and with Him is Paradise for you.” Then Hazrat Bara’ attacked, and the people attacked with him, and the people of Yamama were defeated. Then Hazrat Bara’ entered the fortress of Yamama and faced the chief of Yamama. He attacked Hazrat Bara’, but Hazrat Bara’ thwarted his attack and struck him down. Then he took the sword of the chief of Yamama and beheaded him. Then he said, “May Allah disappoint whoever among you remains.” Then he threw away his sword and picked up his own sword.

Muhammad narrates that Hazrat Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) was searching among the slain on the day of the Battle of Yamama. Whenever he passed by a man, he would examine him, and if there was any sign of life left in him, he would send him away. He reached a man who was lying among the slain. When he struck him with his sword, the man got up and ran away. Hazrat Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) chased after him, saying, "I am the emigrant son of Safiyyah." The man turned towards him and said, "How do you regard capturing your disbelieving brother?" Then he surrounded him, but the man escaped.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Shaddad bin Haad narrates that Hazrat Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him), was martyred in the Battle of Yamama.

Hazrat Urwah narrates that in the battle against Musaylimah, the slogan of the Muslims was this phrase: "O people of Surah Al-Baqarah!"

Hazrat Urwah narrates that when the people of Banu Salim began to apostatize, Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) with an army towards them. There, he gathered the people in one place and set fire to them. When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) learned of this, he came to Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him that you should remove from leadership such a person who inflicts a punishment that is the right of Allah alone! Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "By Allah, I cannot sheathe the sword of Allah until Allah Himself sheathes His sword." Then Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) to proceed towards Musaylimah.

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that during the Battle of Yamama, Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) sent people towards the enemy. They reached the bank of the river, and the enemy attacked the Muslims through a stratagem, causing the Muslims to scatter and retreat. Then Hazrat Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) bowed his head for a while and then raised it. At that time, I was standing between him and Hazrat Bara. It was Hazrat Khalid’s habit that when an important matter arose, he would look towards the sky for a while and then raise his head towards the sky. Then he would express his opinion. Meanwhile, Hazrat Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) began to tremble, so I made him lie down on the ground. He said, “O my brother! I want to break my fast.” Then Hazrat Khalid said, “O Bara! Get up.” He asked, “At this time?” Hazrat Khalid replied, “Yes, at this very time.” (2) Then Hazrat Bara mounted his horse and praised and glorified Allah. Then he said, “O people! There is no way to go to Madinah; if there is a way, it is to Paradise.” Then he encouraged them for a while. Then he patted his horse and set off, and the people followed him. (3) Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that there was a mound in the city of the people of Yamama. The chief of Yamama stood on it, and he was a stout and tall man. He began to recite rajaz (war poetry) and said, “I am the chief of Yamama, I am the refuge of its people, and I, I am.” (4) Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he was a wrestler. He attacked Hazrat Bara (may Allah be pleased with him), so Hazrat Bara defended himself with his armor. Then Hazrat Bara struck his shin and killed him. The ruler of Yamama had a broad coat of mail; Hazrat Bara placed his sword and, taking his coat of mail, struck him with it, and it broke. Then he said, “May Allah disgrace that which is between you and me.” Then he took his sword.

Hazrat Abu Awn Thaqafi narrates that when Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) received the news of the victory of Yamamah, he performed a prostration (sajdah).
