Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Yahya bin Abbad bin Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father and grandfather that my father told me, who nursed me among Banu Murrah, he said: It is as if I am seeing Hazrat Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of the Battle of Mu'tah; he dismounted from his horse, which was reddish in color, then marked its leg, and joined the battle and continued fighting until he was martyred.

Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Hazrat Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) towards the land of Shaam and said: Do not mark the horse’s legs with a strike, you tire it out.

Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said that those horses which become tired should not be marked on their feet with a sign of beating.

Hazrat Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when expeditions were sent, they were instructed not to strike the feet of an animal that had become tired.

Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Do not mark the horse’s leg with a strike, even if it becomes tired.
