Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a journey, he would recite this supplication: "O Allah! You are the companion in travel and the guardian of the family. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel and from unpleasant scenes upon return. O Allah! Make the earth compact for us and make the journey easy for us."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man was about to set out on a journey, so he came to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah! Please give me some advice (counsel)." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I advise you to fear Allah (adopt piety), and to recite Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) whenever you ascend to a height."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Sarjis (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out on a journey, he would seek refuge from the fatigue of travel, the sorrow and distress of the returnee, the decrease in sustenance after its abundance, the supplication of the oppressed, and unpleasant scenes among family and wealth.

It is narrated from Hazrat Awn bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "I intend to go on a journey, please advise me." Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When you are about to set out, say: BISMILLAH, HASBIYALLAH, TAWAKKALTU 'ALALLAH. When you say 'Bismillah', an angel says, 'You have been guided.' When you say 'Hasbiyallah', the angel proclaims, 'You have been protected.' And when you say 'Tawakkaltu 'alallah', the angel proclaims, 'He is sufficient for you.'"

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to recite this supplication when setting out on a journey: "O Allah, grant us that which will convey us to goodness, forgiveness from You, and Your pleasure. All goodness is in Your hand. Surely, You have power over all things. O Allah, You are the companion in travel and the guardian over the family. O Allah, fold the earth for us and make the journey easy for us. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a gloomy return, and from an evil sight concerning our family and wealth." O Allah! The best forgiveness and pleasure is obtained from You. All goodness is in Your hand. You have power over everything. You are the companion in travel and the protector of family and dependents. O Allah! Contract the earth for us and make the journey easy for us. O Allah! We seek Your protection from the hardship of travel, from bad sights, and from the bad condition of our family and wealth.
