Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Atiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the people of Kufa: Indeed, I have been informed that the word "matras" means "security" in Persian. If you say "matras" to a person who does not understand your language, it will be considered as granting security.

Hazrat Abu Farqad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when we conquered the market of Ahwaz, I was with Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him). One of the polytheists ran away, and two Muslims also ran after him. While they were running, one of them said to the polytheist, "Matras" (protection). Upon hearing this, the man stopped. They caught him and brought him to Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was executing the prisoners. When it was that man's turn, one of the two said, "He has protection." Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "How did he get protection?" He replied, "He was running away, and I said to him 'Matras,' so he stopped." Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "What does 'Matras' mean?" He said, "It means 'Do not be afraid.'" He said, "This is protection; let him go." So we let him go.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when we besieged Tustar, at the command of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Hormuzan came down and surrendered. Hazrat Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him with me. When we came to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Hormuzan became silent and did not say anything. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Speak." He said, "Words of the living or of the dead?" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Speak, there is no harm." Hormuzan said: "O people of Arabia, Allah has left nothing between us and you, just as we fought you and killed you. In any case, if Allah the Exalted were with you, we would not have been able to fight you." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), what is your opinion?" Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I submitted: "O Commander of the Faithful (may Allah be pleased with him), I have left behind much power and a large number. If you kill him, the people will despair of life, and he was more severe for their power, and if you keep him alive, the people will become greedy." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Anas (may Allah be pleased with him)! Are you ashamed to kill the killer of Hazrat Bara bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Mujazzah bin Thawr?" Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when I feared that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would kill him, I submitted: "There is no legal way for you to kill him." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Why? Have you given him protection? Have you taken anything from him?" I said, "I have not taken anything, but you yourself said to him, 'Speak, there is no harm upon you.'" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "You must bring someone who will testify with you, otherwise you will be punished." Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when I left him, suddenly Hazrat Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) met me; he also remembered what I had remembered. He testified before Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), so he (may Allah be pleased with him) let him go. Hormuzan became Muslim, and a share was fixed for him.

Hazrat Abu Wa'il narrates: When we were in Khaniqin, a letter from Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reached us. It stated: When a person says to someone "La tadhl" (Do not fear), he has granted him protection. And if he says "La takhaf," he has also granted him protection. And if he says "Matras," he has granted him protection as well. Surely, Allah Almighty knows all languages.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If any Muslim points towards the enemy, and says, "If you surrender, I will kill you," and the enemy surrenders thinking that this is a guarantee of safety, then he will be granted safety.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the commanders of the armies: If any Muslim gestures to an enemy’s man, saying, “If you surrender, I will not kill you,” and the enemy descends and surrenders, believing this to be a guarantee of safety, then he will be granted protection.
