Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Qabeesah narrates that after the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a grandmother came to Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) bringing the mother and grandson, and said, "My grandson and maternal grandson have passed away, and I have learned that I also have a right in their wealth." Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I do not find any right for you in the Book of Allah, and I have not heard anything from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding you." The narrator says that then Hazrat Mugheerah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) testified that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had granted the grandmother one-sixth of the wealth. He (Abu Bakr) said, "Who will testify to this with you?" He replied, "Muhammad bin Maslamah." So Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) testified, and then another grandmother, who was different from the first, came to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He gave her one-sixth of the wealth and said, "When you are together, this wealth will be divided among you." Mu’ammar, the narrator, adds: "And if one of you is alone, then this one-sixth is hers alone."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) granted the grandmother one-sixth share of the wealth.

It is narrated from Hazrat Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) granted the grandmother one-sixth share when there was no son.

Ayub, through a man, narrates the statement of Hazrat Tawus that the paternal grandmother holds the same status as the mother; she will inherit the same share of wealth as the mother would inherit.
