Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Zir narrates from Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he distributed inheritance between the paternal aunt and the maternal aunt.

Ziyad says that indeed I know what action Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took in this matter; he considered the paternal aunt as equivalent to the father and the maternal aunt as equivalent to the mother.

It is narrated from Hasan that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The paternal aunt is entitled to two-thirds of the wealth, and the maternal aunt is entitled to one-third of the wealth.

Sulaiman Absi narrates from a man, from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), that he used to give the same ruling as Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the paternal aunt and maternal aunt: that the paternal aunt receives two-thirds of the wealth and the maternal aunt receives one-third of the wealth.

Shu'bi narrates from Hazrat Masruq that he considered the paternal aunt as equivalent to the father and the maternal aunt as equivalent to the mother.

A’mash narrates from Ibrahim that he said: Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to consider the maternal and paternal aunts as heirs when there was no other heir besides them. Ibrahim says that those elders used to consider the paternal aunt in place of the father and the maternal aunt in place of the mother.

Sha'bi narrates that Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding the maternal and paternal aunts that the paternal aunt receives two-thirds of the wealth and the maternal aunt receives one-third of the wealth.

Hazrat Mansoor and Mughira state that Ibrahim said that the Companions used to appoint heirs according to their relationships.

Hasan narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) made the maternal and paternal aunts heirs, giving the paternal aunt two-thirds of the wealth and the maternal aunt one-third of the wealth.

Ibrahim reports that Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the paternal aunt is entitled to two-thirds of the wealth and the maternal aunt is entitled to one-third of the wealth.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was invited to the funeral of an Ansari. So he (peace be upon him) came riding on a donkey. He (peace be upon him) asked, "Which relatives has he left behind?" The people said, "He has left behind a paternal aunt and a maternal aunt." He (peace be upon him) said, "This is a man who died and left behind a paternal aunt and a maternal aunt." Then he walked a little further and again said, "This is a man who, at the time of death, left behind a paternal aunt and a maternal aunt." Then he said, "I do not find any share for them."

Muhammad bin Abi Bakr narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It is a strange case with the paternal aunt that other relatives inherit from her, but she does not inherit from anyone."

Shareek bin Abdullah narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the inheritance of the paternal and maternal aunts while he was on a mount. The Prophet (peace be upon him) remained silent for a while, then moved forward a little, and then said: Jibreel (peace be upon him) has informed me that they have no share in inheritance.

Ash'ath narrates that Hazrat Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) acknowledged inheritance for the maternal uncle, but did not acknowledge inheritance for the paternal aunt and maternal aunt.
