Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw in a dream that I had two gold bangles in my hands, so I blew on them, and in the interpretation of these bangles, I took them to mean that they are two liars: Musaylimah and Ansi.

It is narrated from Hasan that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I saw in a dream as if there were two gold bangles in my hands. I disliked those bangles, so I blew on them and they flew away. One was Kisra and the other was Caesar.

Hazrat Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I saw in a dream a man emerging from the earth, and there was a man standing over his head with an iron mace in his hand. Whenever he would raise his head from the earth, the man would strike his head with the mace, causing him to sink back into the earth. Then he would emerge from another place, and again the man would come to him and strike his head with the mace." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "That person is Abu Jahl bin Hisham; this will continue to be done to him until the Day of Resurrection."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman ibn Abi Laila that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): I saw in a dream that black sheep were walking behind me and behind them were sheep of a sandy color. Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! These are the Arabs who will follow you, and behind them will be the non-Arabs. The narrator states that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that the angel also gave the same interpretation of this dream.

Hazrat Harr bin Siyah narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that this is the same interpretation that the angel also gave in the morning.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I saw a cloud from which ghee and honey were dripping, and people were taking from it, some taking more and some less. Meanwhile, a rope was let down from the sky. Then you (the Prophet) came and held that rope and climbed up. Thus, Allah, the Exalted, raised you to great heights. After you, a man came, he also held the rope and began to climb, so Allah, the Exalted, raised him to great heights as well. Then after both of you, another man came, he also held the rope and began to climb, and Allah raised him up as well. Then after all three of you, a man held the rope, but the rope was cut. Then it was joined again, so that man also began to climb, and Allah raised him up as well.

Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to interpret this dream. You gave him permission. He said: The cloud refers to Islam, and the ghee and honey refer to the Qur'an, and the rope refers to the path upon which you are walking and ascending to great heights. Thus, Allah, the Exalted, will raise you to great heights. Then after you, a man will follow in your footsteps and ascend to great heights, and Allah will raise him up as well. Then after both of you, a man will follow in your footsteps and go towards the heights, and Allah will raise him up as well. Then after all three of you, a man will follow in your footsteps, then a hindrance will come before him, then that hindrance will be removed, so he will go towards the heights, and Allah will raise him up as well.

After this, he said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Did I interpret correctly? You said: You interpreted correctly and also made a mistake. He said: O Messenger of Allah! I ask you by Allah to tell me. You said: Do not swear.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakrah narrates from his father, who said: We came to Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) as a delegation along with Ziyad. He was not as pleased with any delegation as he was with us. The narrator says that he (Muawiyah) said: O Abu Bakrah! Tell us something that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (Abu Bakrah) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say—while he liked good dreams and people would ask him about them—he was saying: I saw in a dream that a scale was lowered from the sky. Then my weight and Abu Bakr’s were measured, and I outweighed Abu Bakr. Then Abu Bakr and Umar were weighed, and Abu Bakr outweighed Umar. Then Umar and Uthman were weighed, and Umar outweighed Uthman. Then the scale was lifted up towards the sky. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is the Caliphate and Prophethood. After this, Allah the Exalted will grant rule to whomever He wills. Hazrat Abu Bakrah says: Then we were seized by the neck and expelled.

Hazrat Musa bin Uqbah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) related to me, through Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding the epidemic of Madinah, a dream of the Prophet ﷺ: The Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "I saw a black woman with disheveled hair who left Madinah until she reached the place of Mahya’ah and settled there. I interpreted this as meaning that the epidemic of Madinah has been transferred towards Mahya’ah."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: One morning, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and said, "Just now I saw that a scale and keys were given to me. The keys are these very keys. I was placed in one pan of the scale and my Ummah was placed in the other pan, and I outweighed them. Then Abu Bakr was brought and he was weighed, and he outweighed. Then Umar was brought and he was weighed, and he outweighed. Then Uthman was brought and he was weighed, and he outweighed as well. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then the scale was lifted." The narrator says that a man asked the Prophet, "Then where will we be?" He replied, "Wherever you place yourselves."

Hazrat Salim narrates from his father Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw in a dream that I was pulling the bucket of a well with a pulley. Then Abu Bakr came and he drew one or two buckets, and he pulled with weakness, and Allah Almighty will forgive him. Then Umar bin Khattab came and he started drawing water, and the bucket turned into a very large bucket. I have not seen any strong person who did such excellent work as him, until the people became satiated and began to bring their camels to the water.

Narrated from Hazrat Samurah bin Jundub that sometimes the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to ask his companions, "Has any one of you seen a dream?" Then, whatever Allah willed would be narrated to him. One morning, he said to us: "Indeed, two men came to me last night," (the narrator mentioned the word "Atiyani" or "Ithnan"), "these two men said to me, 'Come,' so I went with them. We reached a man who was lying down, and another man was standing at his head holding a rock. Suddenly, he threw the rock at his head and crushed it. Then the stone rolled away some distance. The man went to pick up the stone, and before he returned to the one lying down, his head became as it was before, healthy and whole. Then he repeated the same action. I said, 'Subhan Allah! What is this?' They said, 'Come.' Then we went on until we reached a man lying on his back, and another man was standing near him holding an iron hook. He came to the side of the man's face and tore his cheek up to the back of his neck, and his eye up to the back of his neck, and his throat up to the back of his neck. Then he went to the other side and did the same. He would not finish with one side before the other side became as it was before, healthy and whole. Then he repeated the same action as he did the first time. I said to my two companions, 'Subhan Allah! What is this?' They said to me, 'Come.' Then we went on until we reached a building like a furnace. The narrator said, 'Perhaps he said: We heard loud noises in that furnace.' We looked inside and saw naked men and women, and flames of fire were rising from below them. When the flames reached them, they screamed and cried out. I said to them, 'Who are these people?' They said, 'Come.' Then we went on until we reached a river. The narrator said, 'Perhaps he said: It was a river of red color, like the color of blood.' There I saw a man swimming in the river, and on the bank of the river was a man who had gathered many stones around him. The swimmer would swim as much as he could and reach the man who had gathered stones, and when he reached him, he would open his mouth, and the man would put a stone in his mouth. I said, 'What is this?' They said to me, 'Come.' Then we went on until we reached a very ugly man, uglier than anyone ever seen, and we saw that he had a fire which he was kindling and going around it. I said to my two companions, 'What is this?' They said to me, 'Come.' So we went on until we reached a garden in which there were all kinds of spring flowers, and in the middle of the garden we saw a tall man, whose head I could not see properly because of its height towards the sky, and I saw that around him were many beautiful children. I said to them, 'Who is this man? And who are these children?' They said to me, 'Come.' So we went on and reached a large ladder. I had never seen a ladder bigger or better than it. They said to me, 'Climb it.' I climbed it, and we reached a city built of bricks of gold and silver. We came to the gate of the city and wanted it to be opened for us, so it was opened for us. We entered it and met some people, one side of whose bodies was very beautiful and the other side very ugly. My two companions said to these people, 'Go and bathe in that river.' I saw a river flowing, its water extremely white. They went and jumped into the river, then returned to us, and their ugliness had disappeared, and they became beautiful. My two companions said, 'This is Jannat-ul-Adn, and this is your house.' I looked up and saw something like a white cloud...

Hazrat Khursha bin Harr narrates: He says, I came to Madinah Munawwarah and sat in the mosque with some elderly people who were companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He says, an elderly man came leaning on a staff. The people said, "Whoever wishes to see a man of Paradise, let him look at him." The narrator says, he stood behind a pillar and performed two rak‘ahs. I got up and went to him and said, "Some people are saying this about you." He replied, "Allah, the Exalted, will admit whomever He wills into Paradise, but I saw a dream in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I saw that a man came to me and said, 'Come.' I went with him. He took me to a wide path. On my left side, another path branched off. I wanted to walk on that path, but it was said, 'You are not among the people of that path.' Then on my right side, another path branched off. I walked on that path until I reached a smooth mountain. That man took my hand and made me climb until I reached its peak, but I could not stay there and my feet were not steady. Meanwhile, I saw an iron pillar with a golden ring at its top. That man took my hand and pushed me until I grabbed the ring. He said, 'Hold it firmly.' I said, 'Alright.' He struck the pillar with his foot and I held the ring tightly. I narrated this dream to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said, 'You have seen something good. The wide path is the plain of Resurrection, and the path that branched to your left is the path of the people of Hell, and you are not among them. The path that branched to your right is the path of the people of Paradise, and the smooth mountain is the station of the martyrs, and the ring you held is the ring of Islam. Hold it firmly until death comes to you.'" That elderly companion said, "I hope that I am among the people of Paradise." The narrator says, it became known that this companion was Abdullah bin Salam, may Allah be pleased with him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw in a dream that I was in the house of Uqbah bin Rafi’ and fresh dates of a person named Ibn Tab were brought to us. I interpreted this dream as meaning that for us there is elevation and honor in this world, a good outcome in the Hereafter, and our religion is a pure religion.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw in a dream that it was as if I was in a strong coat of armor, and I saw a slaughtered cow. I interpreted this dream as the coat of armor referring to Madinah Munawwarah, and the cow referring to people.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw in a dream that I was riding a ram, and it was as if the edge of my sword was broken. I interpreted this dream to mean that I will kill the standard-bearer. The narrator ‘Affan says that after this sentence there was something else in this hadith, but I have forgotten it.

Hazrat Samurah bin Jundub narrates that a man said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): I saw in a dream that a bucket was lowered from the sky. Hazrat Abu Bakr came, held the rope of the bucket, and drank some water, but there was some weakness in him. Then Hazrat Umar came, he held the rope and began to drink until he was satisfied. Then Hazrat Uthman came, and he also held the rope of the bucket, drew water, and drank until he too was satisfied.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I saw in a dream that there was moisture flowing between my fingernails. The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: What interpretation did you take from this? He said: I took it to mean knowledge.
