Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ikrimah states that when Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) was asked about the interpretation of any verse of the Holy Qur'an, he would respond by reciting the poetry of the Arabs.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that I did not know the correct meaning of this verse of the Holy Qur'an { رَبَّنَا افْتَحْ بَیْنَنَا وَبَیْنَ قَوْمِنَا بِالْحَقِّ } until I heard this statement of the daughter of Dhi Yazan: "Ta'al afa tahak."

Hazrat Aamir says that in the verse { فَإِذَا ہُمْ بِالسَّاہِرَۃِ } of the Holy Qur’an, "Saahirah" refers to the earth. Then, as evidence, he recited this verse of Umayyah: "Wa feehaa lahmu saahiratin wa bahrin."

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, regarding the word "al-qani'" that appears in Surah Hajj of the Holy Qur'an, says that it refers to one who begs. Then he recited this verse of Shammakh: "A man's wealth reforms him and frees him from his needs; he is more chaste than the one who is content with begging."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that "zaneem" refers to a person who is baseborn and an outcast. Then he recited the verse:
"Zaneemun tada'ahu ar-rijalu ziadatan kama zeeda fi 'ardi al-adimi al-akari'u."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite the word "darasa" in Surah Al-An'am of the Holy Qur'an, and then he would say: "Daarisun ka-ta'mi as-sabbi wal-'alqami."

Hazrat Kahf says that in the verse { فَمِنْہُمْ مَنْ قَضَی نَحْبَہُ } of the Holy Qur'an, "nahbah" means a vow, then he recites this poetry: "Qadat min Yathrib nahbahā fa-istamarat."
