Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Urwah bin Aamir narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about bad omens. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The truest thing in it is a good omen. It does not prevent any Muslim. So when you take a bad omen from something that you dislike, then recite these words: O Allah! No one can bring good except You, and no one can avert evil except You, and there is no power to avoid sins and no strength to do good except with Allah’s help.

Hazrat Urwah bin Amir narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about bad omens. Then the narrator mentioned the hadith similar to Abu Muawiyah, but included these words: The ability to avoid sins and the strength to do good deeds is only through Allah's help.

Hazrat Nafi’ bin Jubair narrates that Hazrat Ka’b asked Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him): “Do you take bad omens?” He replied: “Yes!” He asked: “What supplication do you recite?” Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: “O Allah! There is no bad omen except from You, and there is no goodness except from You, and there is no sustainer except You.” Upon this, Hazrat Ka’b said: “You are the greatest jurist among the Arabs.”
