Replying to the salam of dhimmis
Hadith 27419
٢٧٤١٩ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن (مسلم) (١) عن مسروق عن عائشة أنه أتى النبي ﷺ ناسٌ من اليهود (فقالوا) (٢): السام عليك يا أبا القاسم، فقال: "وعليكم" (٣).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that some Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "As-Saam Alaik (Death be upon you), O Abu al-Qasim!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "And upon you too."
Hadith 27420
٢٧٤٢٠ - حدثنا عبدة بن سليمان ومحمد بن بشر عن (سعيد) (١) عن قتادة عن أنس قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إذا سلم عليكم أحد من أهل الكتاب فقولوا: وعليكم" (٢).
Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When someone from the People of the Book greets you with salam, reply with: "Wa Alaikum."
Hadith 27421
٢٧٤٢١ - حدثنا ابن نمير عن محمد بن إسحاق عن يزيد بن أبي حبيب عن (مرثد) (١) بن عبد اللَّه عن أبي عبد الرحمن الجهني قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إني راكب غدا إلى (يهود) (٢) فلا تبدؤوهم بالسلام، (وإذا) (٣) سلموا عليكم فقولوا: وعليكم" (٤).
Hazrat Abu Abdur Rahman Al-Juhani narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Surely tomorrow I will go to the Jews, so do not initiate the greeting of peace with them, and when they greet you, then say: "And upon you."
Hadith 27422
٢٧٤٢٢ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن عبد اللَّه بن دينار عن ابن عمر قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إن اليهود إذا لقوكم (وقالوا) (١): السام عليكم، فقولوا (لهم) (٢): وعليكم" (٣).
Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, when the Jews meet you and say "As-Saam Alaikum" (death be upon you), then you should reply: "Wa Alaikum" (and upon you).
Hadith 27423
٢٧٤٢٣ - حدثنا أبو أسامة ووكيع عن ابن عون عن حميد بن (زاذويه) (١) عن أنس قال: نهينا أو أمرنا أن لا (نزيد) (٢) أهل الكتاب على: وعليكم (٣).
Hazrat Humaid bin Zaduwaya narrates that Hazrat Anas said: We were forbidden or we were commanded that when replying to the greeting of the People of the Book, we should not add anything to "Alaikum."
Hadith 27424
٢٧٤٢٤ - حدثنا وكيع عن عبد الحميد بن جعفر عن يزيد بن أبي حبيب (١) عن أبي (بصرة) (٢) الغفاري قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إنا غادون إلى (يهود) (٣) فلا (تبدؤوهم) (٤) بالسلام، (فإن) (٥) سلموا (عليكم) (٦) ⦗٢٦٠⦘ فقولوا: وعليكم" (٧).
Hazrat Abu Basrah Al-Ghifari narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Surely, tomorrow we will go to the Jews, so do not initiate greeting them with salam. If they greet you with salam, then reply: Wa Alaikum.
Hadith 27425
٢٧٤٢٥ - حدثنا حميد بن عبد الرحمن عن حسن عن سماك عن عكرمة عن ابن عباس قال: من سلم عليكم من خلق اللَّه فردوا عليهم وإن كان يهوديًا أو نصرانيًا أو مجوسيًا (١).
Hazrat Ikrimah narrates that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Whoever from among Allah’s creation greets you with salam, then respond to his salam, even if he is a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian.
Hadith 27426
٢٧٤٢٦ - حدثنا (ابن) (١) فضيل عن معن عن إبراهيم قال: إذا سلم عليكم الرجل من أهل الكتاب فقل: وعليك.
Hazrat Ma'n narrates that Ibrahim said: When a person from the People of the Book greets you with salam, then reply to him like this: "Wa 'alaik."
Hadith 27427
٢٧٤٢٧ - حدثنا حميد بن عبد الرحمن عن زهير عن جابر عن عامر قال: إذا سلم عليكم يهودي أو نصراني فقولوا: وعليكم.
Hazrat Jabir narrates that Hazrat Amir said: When a Jew or a Christian greets you with Salam, then you should reply: "Wa Alaikum."
Hadith 27428
٢٧٤٢٨ - حدثنا يحيى بن (سليم) (١) عن زمعة (عن سلمة) (٢) بن وهرام عن طاوس قال: كان إذا سلم عليه اليهودي والنصراني قال: (علاك) (٣) السلام.
Hazrat Salamah bin Wahram narrates that when a Jew or a Christian greeted Hazrat Tawus with salam, he would reply, "Alaika as-salam" (Translation: May peace be exalted upon you).
