Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Maymunah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about a mouse that fell into ghee and died. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Remove the mouse and what is around it, and eat the rest."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked: A mouse has died in clarified butter (ghee)? Hazrat Abu Hurairah says: So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered that the mouse and the ghee around it should be taken out and thrown away.

Hazrat Maisarah narrates from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding a mouse that falls into ghee, that he said: If the ghee is melted, then throw away the ghee. And if the ghee is solid, then remove the mouse and the ghee around it and throw them away, and eat the remaining ghee.

It is narrated from Ibn Sirin that Ash'ari was asked about the clarified butter in which a lizard had died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sell it in some way, but do not sell it to any Muslim.

It is narrated from Hazrat Nafi' that a large rat fell into the cooking pot of the household of Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). So, a question was asked about it. He replied: "Benefit from it and use it to oil the curry."

It is narrated from Hazrat Safiyyah bint Ibn Ubaid that the household of Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) had a jar in which there were twenty faraq (a specific measure) or more of ghee. A mouse fell into it and died, so Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) instructed the household to use that ghee for lighting lamps.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Jarab bin Abi Al-Aswad. He says that Hazrat Ibn Masood was asked about a mouse that fell into ghee and died. He replied: Allah Almighty has only forbidden the flesh and blood of carrion.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the olive oil in which a mouse falls and dies, said: It is not lawful for any Muslim, any Jew, or any Christian to consume it.

Hazrat Thumamah bin Abdullah bin Anas narrates from his grandfather Hazrat Anas that he was asked about a mouse falling into clarified butter or olive oil. He replied: If the clarified butter is solid, then the mouse and the surrounding butter should be taken out, and the rest may be eaten. But if the butter is melted, then it should be used for lighting lamps.

It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit bin Hajjaj. He says that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: If the ghee is solid, then remove and throw away the part touched by the mouse and its surroundings, and eat the rest. But if the ghee is liquid, then do not eat it.

It is narrated from Ibrahim, he says that when a large mouse falls into melted ghee and dies in it, then this ghee should not be eaten. And if this ghee is solid, then the mouse and what is around it should be taken out and thrown away. And the rest may be eaten.

It is narrated from Hasan and Muhammad, both of whom say that a man has this choice.

A similar narration is reported from Hazrat Sha'bi.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ata that he says: If the ghee is solidified, then remove the mouse and what is around it, and eat the rest. And if the ghee is melted, then use it to light a lamp, but do not eat it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mak'hool that a mouse fell into olive oil, so people asked the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Light lamps with it, but do not eat it." Hazrat Mak'hool used to say that when a mouse falls into ghee and the ghee is solid, then remove the mouse and what is around it and throw it away, and eat the rest. But if the ghee is melted, then none of it should be eaten.

Hazrat Ikrimah narrates about Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he was asked about a mouse that had fallen into solidified ghee. He replied: (The mouse and) that which is around it should be taken out and thrown away, and the remainder may be eaten.
