Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) made the carpenter a guarantor.

Hazrat Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) held craftsmen liable for things lost or damaged by their hands.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) made the dyer and the colorist liable and said: There is benefit for the people in this.

Hazrat Qazi Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) made the dyer responsible and said: In case of damage, he should return the same cloth or give cloth like it.

Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) used to hold the dyer liable.

Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) say that if a dyer tears the cloth, he will be liable for its price. And the cloth will be taken from him.

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If the dyer spoils (the item), then he is liable; but if the item drowns, burns, or is destroyed by an enemy, then he is not liable.

Hazrat A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) says that my neighbor Thabit, who was a dyer, said to me that I should ask Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) that if a person gave clothes to his slave and he lost them, then what is the ruling? I asked Ibrahim, and he (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Did he not know that he was his slave? I said: Yes. He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He will be liable.

Hazrat Mughira, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I asked Ibrahim, may Allah have mercy on him, that if a cloth maker passed woolen clothes (wool) by burning coals and the burning coal burned that wool, what is the ruling? He, may Allah be pleased with him, said: He will be liable.

Hazrat Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him) says that a dyer and every joint laborer will be held liable.

Hazrat Aamir (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the dyer will be responsible only for what his hands have done (for any damage caused by him).
