Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It was asked from Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) about giving something at the time of unveiling the face (manh dikhai)? He (may Allah have mercy on him) replied that it has no basis.

Muhammad, may Allah have mercy on him, disliked giving anything to a woman at the time of unveiling her face.

Hazrat Abu Al-Khalil made a will that a gift should be given to my wife. He gave that gift to her considering it a hardship (out of annoyance).

It is narrated from Hazrat Mak'hool (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When a man marries a woman with a dowry or any promise, if that promise and dowry were agreed upon before the marriage, then it is the woman's right. And if after the marriage the man gives any gift to the woman's family members, then it is for them. And among all those whom a man honors with anything, his daughter and sister are the most deserving.

Hazrat Ubaidullah bin Muammar, may Allah have mercy on him, used to give the ruling for it, and Iyas, may Allah have mercy on him, did not use to give the ruling for it.

Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Ibn Azniyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) considered the money given for showing the face (as part of marriage customs) to be impermissible.

Hazrat Awza'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) about the amount given for showing the face (munh dikhai). He (may Allah have mercy on him) replied that this is a hearsay matter and it is not permissible.

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if there is a person for whom a wife is being prepared, and people say to this person, "We will not show you the wife until you give a gift," Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) says about this person that this gift is obligatory upon him, which will be taken from him.
