Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when a man marries a woman, she will not receive maintenance from him until he consummates the marriage with her.

Hazrat Kamil bin Fudail, may Allah have mercy on him, says that I asked Hazrat Sha'bi: If a person marries a woman and, without consummating the marriage, goes somewhere, then when he returns, will the woman receive maintenance from him? Hazrat Sha'bi replied: As long as he does not consummate the marriage, she will not receive maintenance.

Yunus, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked: If a man marries a woman and then goes far away without consummating the marriage, will the woman receive maintenance? He replied that Hasan used to say that the woman will not receive maintenance until he consummates the marriage with her. Or, if the girl's guardians told him to take the girl but he does not take her with him, then she will receive maintenance.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a woman's maintenance becomes obligatory upon the man when the woman makes a demand.

Hazrat Aamir (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when the separation is due to the woman, then it is not obligatory for the man to provide maintenance.
