Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that whoever truly intends to divorce should give only one divorce and leave the woman, allowing three menstrual cycles to pass.

Hazrat Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Sunnah method of divorce is that a man should divorce his wife in a state of purity without having intercourse with her, and then let her waiting period ('iddah) pass.

Hazrat Abu Qilabah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Sunnah method of divorce is that a man gives one divorce and then leaves her until she becomes separated (bainah).

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if the legal punishment were enforced on divorce, no man would be ashamed after divorcing his wife; he would give the woman one divorce and then leave her until she has had three menstrual periods.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the predecessors considered it preferable that a man should give his wife one divorce and then leave her for three menstrual cycles.

Hazrat Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Hammad (may Allah have mercy on him) say that the Sunnah method of divorce is that a man gives divorce to his wife and then leaves her until the waiting period ('iddah) passes.

Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) says: What is wrong with people that a man says to his wife, "Go to your family!" and then he divorces her among her family. He strictly forbade this.
