Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) say regarding the person who sends a sacrificial animal (Hadi) that he should abstain from those things from which a person in the state of Ihram abstains, and it is not necessary that he does not recite the Talbiyah. And Hazrat Jafar says that the people to whom he is sending the Hadi, he should fix a day with them and take a promise, then when that promised day arrives, he should abstain from all those things from which a person in Ihram abstains.

When Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) would send his sacrificial animal, he would avoid all those things from which a pilgrim in the state of Ihram abstains, except that he would not recite the Talbiyah.

Hazrat Rabi’ah bin Abdullah al-Hudair narrates that I saw Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) on the pulpit of Basra, bare (in the state of Ihram), when he was the governor of Basra during the caliphate of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). People asked him about this matter, so it was told to the people that he had ordered the sacrificial animal to be garlanded, that is why he was bare. Then I met Hazrat Ibn Zubair and informed him about this matter. He said, "By the Lord of the Ka’bah, this is an innovation (bid’ah)."

Muhammad says that when a person sends a sacrificial animal to someone by hand, he should tell him to put a collar on it on such-and-such day at such-and-such time, then on that day he should abstain from all those things from which a person in the state of Ihram abstains.
