Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Uqbah bin Amir narrates that my sister made a vow that she would go to the House of Allah barefoot and without wearing a shawl. I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Instruct your sister to wear a shawl, ride (instead of walking), and fast for three days as expiation.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man walking unsteadily between his two children. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is this?" They replied, "He has made a vow to go to the House of Allah on foot." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Surely Allah is free of need from this person putting himself in hardship." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed him, so he mounted (an animal).

It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah bin Udhaynah that Hazrat Ubaidullah says it was his grandmother, and Hazrat Malik says it was his mother, who made a vow to travel on foot. When she reached the place of Suqya by walking, she became unable to walk any further. I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about this. He said: Instruct her to come again next year and resume walking from the place where she became unable to continue.

Hazrat Sha'bi was asked about a person who made a vow to go to the Ka'bah on foot, but he traveled half the way on foot and half riding. He replied that it is narrated from Hazrat 'Amir that Hazrat Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: In the coming year, he should ride as much as he walked and walk as much as he rode, and he should offer a camel as a sacrifice (hadi).

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that if a person says, "I have to travel on foot," then if he wishes, he may ride (an animal) and offer (a camel) as a sacrificial gift.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about a person who made a vow to go to the House of Allah on foot? It is narrated from Abdul Rahim that he should ride (an animal) and offer a sacrifice (of an animal), and it is narrated from Abu Khalid that he should offer a camel as a gift.

Hazrat Amr bin Saeed Al-Bajali narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair was on the pulpit and I was sitting below (in front of) the pulpit. A person came and said, "O Commander of the Faithful! I had made a vow to perform Hajj on foot. When I had traveled a certain distance on foot, I feared that I might miss Hajj, so I mounted (an animal)." He replied, "There is no mistake upon you. Next year, return and for the part you rode, walk on foot, and for the part you walked, ride."

Hasan was asked about a person who has vowed to perform Hajj on foot. He replied: He should walk on foot, then when he is unable to continue walking, he may ride, and he should also send a sacrificial camel (hadi).

Hazrat Musa bin Ubaidah narrates that I heard from Hazrat Qasim: A person asked a question that he had taken an oath to go to the House of Allah on foot, but when he became tired, he rode. He (Hazrat Qasim) replied: When the next year comes, he should walk as much as he rode, and for the distance he walked, he should go riding.

Ibrahim was asked: A person asked that he has taken an oath to go to the House of Allah on foot, but when he became tired, he rode (an animal). He replied: When the next year comes, he should walk as much as he rode, and for the distance he walked, he should go riding.
