Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says: If a person swears an oath or makes a vow to make something unlawful upon himself, then he should free a slave, or fast for two months, or feed sixty needy people. The narrator says: I asked Ibrahim and Hazrat Mujahid, and both of them said: If he cannot do that, then he should feed ten needy people.

Hazrat Amr narrates that I heard Hazrat Ibn Zubair say: Fulfill your vows.

Hazrat Abdullah says that a vow made for a sin should not be fulfilled; its expiation is the expiation for an oath.

Hazrat Jabir says that the expiation for a vow is the same as the expiation for an oath.

Hazrat Abdul Malik narrates that a person asked Hazrat Ata, "Should I not go to my brother and sister (at home)?" He replied, "Go to them and give charity (feed) to ten needy people."

Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid says that a vow is an oath.

The same is narrated from Hazrat Tawus.

Hazrat Sha’bi says: A people say that a vow (nazar) is a strict oath. Indeed, it is an oath; its expiation will be given.

Hazrat Mujahid says that a vow is (like) an oath.

It is narrated from Hazrat Imran bin Husain that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There is no fulfillment of a vow made upon something usurped, and its expiation is the expiation for an oath.

A narration similar to this is reported from Hazrat Imran bin Husain.

Hazrat Mu'tamir says that I asked Hazrat Ibn Zubair, "Has the one who narrated to you heard from Imran?" He replied, "No, a person narrated to me from Hazrat Imran."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Ma’qil says that a vow is a very strict type of oath.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Whoever makes a vow (nazr) upon an oath, and then breaks it, then upon him is the expiation (kaffarah) of a solemn oath (yameen mughallazah).

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib says that a person said, "I have made a vow," but did not specify the oath and remained silent, then fulfilling the vow is obligatory upon him.

Hazrat Qais says that a vow (nazr) is something by which something is extracted from a miser.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that a vow (nazr) is a strict oath.
