Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Amarah narrates that one of the companions of Hazrat Abdullah was ill and people were sitting by his side. Sweat was flowing from his forehead, and a person began to wipe the sweat from his forehead. He struck the person's hand. Hazrat Sufyan says that indeed the noble companions liked sweat for the deceased.

Hazrat Alqamah went to visit a friend who was suffering from (phlegmatic) illness. He touched his forehead and saw that he was sweating, upon which he laughed. Some people asked, "O Abu Shibl! What made you laugh?" He replied, "I laughed at Abdullah's statement that when a believer sweats at the time of death, it is because he has some bad deeds, so due to them, he faces some hardship at the time of death so that it becomes an expiation for those bad deeds. And the soul of a disbeliever and a sinner departs like the breath of a donkey, because they too have some good deeds, so at the time of death, they are given ease so that this ease becomes a recompense for those good deeds."
