Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) Al-Azdi narrates that I saw Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) at a funeral. He lifted the bier from all four sides and first placed his shoulder on the right side, then moved away from there. He stayed close, not going too far.

Hasan says that there is no harm in starting from whichever side of the bed you wish.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas states: If you have the ability and power, then begin from the right side (legs) of the bed, then come close to the bed, otherwise come near to it.

Hazrat Ja'far bin Iyas narrates that I saw Hasan carrying a bier at a funeral. He placed the bier on his left shoulder, then turned and placed the front part of the bier on his right shoulder, then went to the back and placed the rear part of the bier on his right shoulder, then turned again and placed the rear part of the bier on his left shoulder, and then left it (for others).
