Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Do not consider your dead impure; indeed, a believer is not impure, whether alive or dead.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrates that I asked Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): Should the one who bathes the deceased also perform ghusl (ritual bath) himself? He replied: No.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Do not consider your dead impure, that is, the one who bathes the deceased does not have to perform ghusl.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrates that after giving ghusl (ritual washing) to a deceased person, my respected mother said to me: Ask and tell me, am I required to perform ghusl? I went to Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and asked him. He said: Did your mother wash something impure (that she herself needs to perform ghusl)? Then I went to Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and asked him, and he also replied in the same way: Did your mother wash something impure?

Ibrahim narrates that Hazrat Abdullah was asked whether the person who bathes the deceased is required to perform ghusl (ritual bath)? He replied: If your companion is impure, then bathe him and take a bath yourself.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), daughter of Sa’d, narrates that Hazrat Sa’d was called to the funeral of Hazrat Sa’id bin Zaid. He was near Baqi’. He came, gave him (the deceased) the ritual bath, shrouded him, then applied fragrance to him. Then he came and led his funeral prayer. After that, he asked for water and took a bath, and said: “I did not bathe because I had given the deceased a bath, even if the one who is bathed is impure. Rather, I bathed because of the heat.”

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) state that there is no ghusl (ritual bath) required for the one who bathes the deceased.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mu'adhah that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked whether the person who bathes a dead man is required to perform ghusl (ritual bath)? She replied, "No."

Hazrat Alqamah bin Abdullah Al-Muzani narrates that four companions gave my father the ritual bath after his death. They did nothing more than roll up their sleeves and loosen their shirts to the place where the izar (waist-wrapper) is tied. When they finished giving him the bath, they performed only the ablution for prayer (wudu), not a full bath (ghusl).

Hazrat Khudai bin Ziyad narrates that Abdullah bin Mughaffal made a will that at the time of my death, Ibn Ziyad should not come to me and that only my companions should remain with me. So, people called among his students 'Aiz bin 'Amr, Abu Barzah, and other people. They rolled up their sleeves and gathered their shirts to give Abdullah bin Mughaffal the ritual bath, and when they finished giving the bath, they only performed ablution.

Hazrat Urwah narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) shrouded a deceased (after giving ghusl) and applied fragrance to him. Then (let alone performing ghusl), he did not even touch water.

It is narrated from Ibrahim that the companions used to say: If your companion is impure, then bathe him and then bathe yourself.

Imam Shabi says that if the deceased is impure, then you should perform ghusl (ritual washing) for him and then perform ghusl yourself.
