Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir in a marfu’ form that when any one of you passes away, give him a good (adorned and beautiful) shroud, and if you do not find that, then shroud him in a Yemeni sheet.

Hazrat Khaytham bin Amr narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) had made a will that he should be shrouded in a fine garment worth two hundred dirhams.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin used to prefer that the shroud be good and of high quality. And he used to say that surely they meet in their shrouds.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umair bin Aswad al-Sakuni that Hazrat Mu'adh bin Jabal advised his wife and departed. His wife passed away, and she was shrouded in old clothes. When we had lifted her on our hands to bury her, he arrived and asked, "In which cloth have you shrouded her?" We replied, "In old clothes." So he uncovered her and shrouded her in new clothes and said: "Give your dead good and fine shrouds, for surely they will be gathered in them."

Hazrat Ibn al-Hanifah states that nothing (special) is kept in a (fine) shroud for the deceased; this is an honor for the living.
