Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) says that keep calculating the zakat that is obligatory on the wealth of the orphan, then when he becomes mature and reaches the age of puberty, inform him. If he wishes, he may pay the zakat, and if he wishes, he may not.

Ibrahim says that there is no zakat on the wealth of an orphan until he reaches maturity.

It is narrated from Ibrahim in the same manner.

Hasan says that there is no zakat on the wealth of an orphan until he reaches puberty.

Yunus narrates that Hasan had the wealth of his brother’s orphaned children, but he did not pay zakat on it.

Hazrat Shurayh says regarding the wealth of an orphan that it is certain that if you keep taking out small amounts, nothing will be left with him.

Hazrat Aamir says that there is no zakat on the wealth of an orphan (before reaching puberty).

Hazrat Saeed bin Dinar narrates that I asked Hazrat Sha’bi about the wealth of an orphan, whether it is liable for zakat. He replied, “Yes. If it were with me, I would not give its zakat.”

Hazrat Hasan bin Zaid says that I heard Hazrat Mujahid saying: "Keep counting (the wealth of the orphan). When you come to know (that it has reached the amount liable for zakat), then pay the zakat."

Hasan says that zakat will be taken on date palm trees and animals, but as for the wealth of an orphan, there is no zakat on it until he reaches maturity.

It is narrated from Hazrat Asim that Hazrat Abu Wa'il says: There was an orphan under my care who owned eight thousand (dirhams or dinars). I did not pay zakat on his wealth until he reached maturity, then I returned the wealth to him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Sa’ib that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) had the wealth of an orphan, and he lent that wealth so that its zakat would not have to be paid.
