Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ka'b bin Asim that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Observing a fast during travel is not an act of virtue.

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, and during that journey, he saw a man around whom people had gathered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What has happened to him?" The people replied, "He is fasting." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Fasting while on a journey is not righteousness."

Hazrat Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Some people were fasting and some were not. Those who were not fasting pitched tents and filled water skins. Upon this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that today those who did not fast have surpassed others in terms of reward.

Hazrat Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his father that a fasting person during travel is like a non-fasting person during residence.

Hazrat Abu Jamrah says that I asked Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about fasting during travel, that one thing is difficult and the other is easy. If Allah gives you ease in any matter, then accept it.

Hazrat Zakariya narrates that Hazrat Amir did not use to fast while traveling.

Hasan says that permission has been given to not fast during travel.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says that not fasting during travel is an act of resolve.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that not fasting during travel is a charity which Allah Almighty has bestowed upon His servants.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted in the year of the conquest of Makkah, and when he reached the place of Kadid, he broke his fast. The rule is that the last action of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will be taken (as precedent).

Hazrat Abu Umais says that I asked Abu Ja'd about fasting during travel, so he said, "Do not fast at all."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Zakwān narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) spent two Ramadans in Shaam performing Qiyam (night prayers), but did not fast.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that whoever travels with me should by no means fast.

Hazrat Mudarris bin Abdullah narrates that I said to Hazrat Sha’bi, “I live in Rayy.” He replied, “Pray two rak’ahs.” I asked, “What do you say about fasting?” He replied, “Do not fast either, even if you stay there for ten years.”

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, and Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar were also with him. Food was brought to the Prophet, so he said to both of them, "Come and eat." Both of them said, "We are fasting." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Prepare the saddle for your two companions, do work for your two companions, come close and eat food."
